I don't like Wembley. Coming back from the cup final i think i got back at 2am having gone round Luton twice (possibly three times) due to a diversion as a result of an accident on the M1 and the coach driver missing the turning (I was only 6 and i think i'd seen Latics loose twice before then). Then there's that semi where i went on a bus which had a few reds on it (most of them were part-timers but you could say that for a lot of the reds in Manchester) knowing full well the abuse i'd get the next day in school. Then (admittedly not following the Latics) I was at Wembley for the last ever 5 nations game when England lost in the last minute to a Welsh try as a result of a dodgy penalty and had to put up with my dad's smug face (he's Welsh) on the journey home. Aside from Wembley, the next worse journey back was at Blackpool in the play-offs as me and my mate trudged through Blackpool to the train station where i had to stop him going into a pub with a lot of tangerine colours outside but no colours inside and then they held the train for the firm to get on with their police escort. The best thing about that day was when the Ivorian diving gold medal holder wiped the smug look off the scums faces in my local pub not long after we got in.

What was wrong with SAFE? Nothing besides it achived feck all.....:)

Bradford Away FA Cup replay mid eighties, 5-0 down at half time we left with about 25 mins to go in order to drown our sorrows in Ashton. Whilst trying to locate the car, someone noticed it being driven off up the hill, after a "high speed" chase in the back of a nearby Police Van backdoors flying open as we went, the "game" Coppers fianlly gave up and after spending some time reporting the theft and waiting for alternative transport (train) we ended up skint after train tickets and a taxi as far as we could get from Manchester with a two mile walk home at 1am.

Happy Days

A few spring to mind:

Leeds away this season, as mentioned by Senor Sideburns

Norwich away, relegated and stuck on a dry train back to London for what seemed like about a day and a half

Plymouth away circa 1990. Exhaust fell off on the motorway.

A six hour train journey from Birmingham to Salford the day we beat Villa, only to find that the whole of Salford was partying for some unknown reason.

Wembley 94, although as I lived 3 miles away, my journey home was probably better than most.

QPR away.

However, I'm someone who doesn't become all depressed away from home, 'cause it's still the excitement about the typical away-day. I sometimes say "Oh, I won't be traveling down here again", but I do. I think everyone says that, but still end up traveling all over. That's the beauty of it.

Those Accy fans will be there next week.

Norwich away how could I forget? went on Barlow's, on the way home the mudflap proceeded to slip and catch on the tyre, it melted most of the tyre away through pure friction, we were on a very narrow and dark A -Road at the time and miles from anywhere. Luckily another coach stopped and picked up a few. As for the rest of us we had to wait an eternity for ATS to arrive and we limped back into Oldham around 3am. Fair play to Stormin' Norman the driver he dropped the remaining passengers off as close as he could to their homes, but what a nightmare day!

The QPR Play-Off semi-final obviously. Travelling in was full of excitement even with us at 1-1; straight from a meeting, picked up wife in Reading, drove into West End and a few pre-match drinks in that pub that we took over.

It then got really surreal........Chris Moore and his "mates" laughing and joking with us in the pub and Clyde Wijnhard walking along the touchline waving at us all in that white muscle top that was six sizes too small for him (XXXL?). A win must have been on the cards and then Furlong went and kicked us in the knackers!

Clock tickied down with all the stewards totally smug and the worst ever tube journey I had in my life. Consolation from the QPR fans in the same carriage but it was just words, empty words.

I actually felt physically sick last week when I read about it again in Holloway's book.

Another one springs to mind is the game when we were 3-0 down to Wycombe in the first half (can't remember season) and I then had to endure a totally smug mate who supported Wycombe and I then had to be a "good loser" in the player's bar afterwards. Journey back up the M40 was terrible and the only saving grace was witnessing Gary Kelly going one on one with a fan at half-time and almost climbed into our end to take the fan on.

Remember my owd fella sweaing at the radio a lot that afternoon, think it was 84-85 season and all the goalscorers went on to play for Latics if I remember rightly (sure i've read it in a programme from the season after) Stitch got a hat-trick Tommy Wright bagged two and Shez scored too.

Checked soccerbase and it was 29/9/84 no scorers listed but i'm sure i'm right!

Remember it well. for some reason I was sat in their end. Hmmmmmmm....and yes it was 6

My nomination would be the first time my mum allowed me to go to an away game on my own. Chesterfield in the cup, I'm guessing about late '71, I would be 13 ish. I got the coach from Yelloways on Yorkshire St and we lost , poss 3-0. We set off home just after 5pm but it started to snow. it got heavier and heavier and the coach couldn't get back up the hills( possibly out of Buxton) you must remember this was pre motorway days. I can remember getting off the coach at the bottom of a ruddy great snow covered hill and loads of us pushing cars up it as we remained marooned at the bottom. We all went into a cafe we had found to warm up and wait for the gritters etc. My mum had given me some extra dosh in case of an emergency, which i thought meant buying chicken and chips in the chippy ( she later informed me it meant phoning her up to tell her I was ok if there was a problem) We eventually set off and got back into Oldham about midnight. i then rang my dad to come and pick me up and the scene i arrived home to was not pretty. My mum and various Aunties were in our house all weeping convinced I'd come to a sticky end and I got the mother of all doggings.

Don't think I was allowed to go to an away game ony own again until I was about 34.

If it helps to confirm the date i'm sure Bournemouth beat someone(non league? ) on the same day by 9 or 10 and ted McDougal scored 6 (ish)

Happy days! :)

There's a blast from the past... Norman the Barlows coach driver. What a miserable barsteward, but he was the one Barlows driver who could actually find a football ground.

Whenever there was more than one coach going, you'd always head for Norman's, knowing that you'd see kick off. The same couldn't be said of the others.

Ignoring th obvious Wembley and QPR journeys, I think some depressing ones that spring to mind are:

Grimsby (5-0 and about ten degrees below in the League Cup)

Spurs (5-0 - Gerrard had a mare)

Port Vale (Every bloody time)

Reading (won 3-1 in the FA Cup but then some Southern get put the window through right next to me - it was freezing all the way back to Hilton Park where we changed coach)

Tranmere (Drew 2-2 from two up. They scored dodgy goal in injury time... cheered up when we got back though as we did the Gerry's 5-1 in Munich)

Coming back from Chesterfield (ironically one of the nearest grounds to Leicester)! Peed it down, got hopelessly lost in the back streets as we took a detour as the traffic was awful, and ended up aquaplaning along some country lanes somewhere in Derbyshire! Brown trouser time it certainly was. Either that, or trying to get out away at Scunthorpe. Both memorable journeys I would sooner forget.

It stood for 'Secure Athletic's Future Existence'. The club is still in existence so it could be argued that it achieved it's objective :)

Don't worry, Supertaylor's either very ignorant and badly informed about SAFE or just after a rise. I suspect the latter, but it really is more likely a coin-flip between the two!

Ah, Scunthorpe's club Car Park. I first had an inkling things may not be right when the bloke (Scunny fan) parked in the car next to me got in his car and started reading his paper. An hour or so later I was nearly asking him for the sports section. Latics' car park is brilliant in comparison.

NB. For those who go again, you carry on past the ground and turn in left and park on the estate there, it cuts a good forty minutes off getting away.

I post under oafc0000 but nice try in watering down my posts...

SAFE achived very little for the club in the end mate.... If I'm wrong please pont out where? Always prepared to admit where I'm wrong....unlike yourself ...

It all ended with chris moores being put in charge for a start.... Although they had little to do wth that in reality.....they dd nothing but bucket collections....which a nice gestures but isn't going to fund a footballl club or keep it afloat.....

That's my memory....if someone wants to point out where I'm wrong I can accept that....so much happened since....

Last year at Scunny i remembered the debacle from the year before and was first in either queue. They then waited 5 minutes before they let anyone go and what does the steward do he lets the other queue go first despite knowing that i was there way before them. Another wait of 5 minutes and he finally decided to let me go. FFS. I had a 10 minutes wait to get out of that car park despite being the first in the queue, so imagine how bad it is if you are at the back of a queue.

No I wasnt....

But SAFE....hardly contributed to us being in a SAFE postion.....

SAFE as a organisation was nothing... They didnt have support from the fans.... The fans wanted and damnded change and we wanted Lees out... This had nothing to do with SAFE.. Safe was formed after this ball started rolling... The preasure on Lees to sell was already huge.... Much like the "Supporters Trust" it was never backed or supported by enough fans... I think they most productive thing they did was write to Lees asking them to sell.... SAFE could be descirbe as a group of concerned fans totaling 10/20 people who though they were the voice of the fans....much like the trust....

You dont half like to put words in peoples mouths....

Sensible debate is soo hard with you....that why i struggle to respect your opinion....

As I said, completely ill-informed. Or disinterested at the time. Most likely! Too much trouble, I reckon.

"Sensible debate is soo hard with you....that why i struggle to respect your opinion...."

Oh the irony....you're so ill informed, it's impossible with you. Hence, not getting into a debate over it with you.

Yeah cause my track record during the last crisis (aka council / stadium) was so questionable.... was on here everyday giving names of councilors out, writing lettes etc.... Do you remember a group of latics fans demostarting outside of lees offices and getting in the chron....that had nothing to do with SAFE and i was activily involved.....days later the annouced they would sell....

Your the most disrespectful, arogant fan I have every communicated with....its unpossible to respect you...

I disagree with people on here from time to time about matters but I always try to defend my point / explain it....

You on the other hand just resort to name calling, swearing and childish slures like trying to make out someone isnt who they say they are......grow up and dont post if your not prepared to discuss/debate.....
