steveoafc Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 With all the debate about our current centre backs it got me thinking about the best ones i've seen for latics. If you could choose a pairing from your time watching, who would you pick? For me i'd go with JOBSON and BUCHAN Quote

BlueJazzer Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Jobson and, despite a slow start to his Latics career, I always like Redmond. Oh and Fleming.... Can we have a back three with wingbacks? Quote

Andyt84 Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Back four of Barrett, Fitz Hall, Jobson and Barlow Quote
laticfanatic2003 Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Kenny Clements and Paul Futcher........ Jobson and Redmond..............Warhurst and Barrett..................Hall, Hill and Haining , oh what id give to see us with any players of that quality again at BP . Quote
lancy lad Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Barrett and Warhurst as a partnership.............. "You'll neva beat Earl Barrett" Quote
RichmondLatic Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Why not, or a back four of : whittle buchan jobson irwin Buchan was pretty poor during his time at Latics. Barrett and Jobson for me Quote
eyres_28 Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Barrett and Warhurst (alongside Barlow and Irwin) would have been IMMENSE if ever given a proper run .... pace to die for Personally in recent years i thought Hill, Haining and Fitz has everything a back line wud want ... esp. wiv our best defender in recent years covering at left wing back Quote
Break The Silence Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Has to be Barrett and Jobson for me, by a mile..... Quote
garcon Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Jobson - easily the best centre-half we've had, one of those who somehow missed the boat - his true destiny should have been to replace Alan Hansen at Liverpool (yes I think he was that good). Alongside Jobbo? Not an easy one. Good as they were, I can't pick Barrett or Warhurst because neither of them were specialist centre-halves and both were far better in other positions. The best centre half I've seen in an Oldham shirt in recent times is Clint Hill, but I don't think he can quite match up to the old warhorse himself, Andy Holden. Jobson and Holden then. First one to mention lack of pace gets shot. Quote
Hometownclub Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Purely from a pace point of view (which lets face it is the only criteria that really needs to be considered ). I'd go for Jermaine Johnson and David Beresford. (plenty of height there too). Quote
millsy82 Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 All time: Earl Barrett Richard Jobson Recent Times: Clint Hill Fitz Hall Quote
mikejh45 Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 How about Kilcline and Gregan, Oldham's version of a solar eclipse!!! Jobson and Barrett are the stand out partnership. If only we had a defender who could attack the ball like Jobson and get us a few goals. Quote
garcon Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I think the memories of Earl Barrett are a little clouded with nostalgia. I remember him as an absolute fecking liability at centre half, who only got away with his catalogue of Hazellesque mistakes because of his incredible pace. Quote

He must have got something right to earn a deal with a better club in Aston Villa and then England caps and regular call ups. Quote
garcon Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I'm not saying he was a poor player, far from it. He just wasn't a centre-half. He'd moved to (a very good) right-back/right-wing by the time he want to Villa, and I'm not sure he ever played centre-half for them. Quote

Individually, you may have a point because I don't think Jobbo was the same without Barrett but as a partnership they complimented each other very well. Quote
EASTLEY Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Andy Holden and Andy Linghan for me, both pure quality. Then Jobbo, Earl and Fleming until the stamp by John Aldridge, never thought he was quite the same after that. Quote
steveoafc Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 How would mulvaney and cranston have coped these days? Quote
oldhamrosco Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Jobbo For England and Fleming, no doubts at all. Quote
Cookie Monster Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Barrett - Flemming (before his knee injury, England Quality) - Jobson (was england quality) - Irwin that back 4 would grace any top 6 premiership side Quote
