was i watching the same game?

If you think that was a good performance, then you are happy with mid table

forgive me if im wrong but i didnt see :censored: pass a ball to one of our players

Danny Whitaker when he cane on was the best player on the pitch - and thats saying something

no i don't think i was watching the same game as you.

on the down side, Brill's kicking was awful,Whitaker looked far too hesitant (and he certainly wasn't the best player on the pitch) and Byfield isn't match fit - which isn't the same as being lazy and i wish people would learn to tell the difference.

on the plus side...:censored: did well, we certainly didn't miss Eardley,i thought Taylor had a decent game (i could be hallucinating be i'm sure i saw him put a tackle in and win the ball in the first half),Hazell looked sharper than he has for a while,Worthington looks like he wouldn't pull out of a tackle on a Sherman tank, and if Parker and Abbott both stay fit we should have a great partnership up front.

Yes it was frustrating but i've kind of missed that over the summer.

Did you like Eardley by any chance?

As i said, he's played very little first team football and has only just joined us and i thought he aquitted himself very well, especially considering that he didn't have a 'natural' right winger/midfielder in front of him - and maybe if you took these things into consideration in you critique of a player after seeing him for only 90 minutes you may be able to form a more balanced opinion of his performance.

Why do you keep bringing Eardley up?

Very little first team football? well why is he at our club then? is it because hes the best we can attract?

if you watch him for more than 90 minutes then you might take it into consideration that hes :censored:

As for very little first team football, he signed for premier league Blackburn Rovers at the age of 18 and considering their squad, he didn't see much 1st team action - though after seeing him today, he looks a good prospect - and if you can think of many better ways to afford to bring better players here - tell us.

If you really do think he's :censored:, you must be a world beater!!!

my opinion

brill - looked solid off what he had to do ( dont judge him off what he didnt)

both fullbacks looked very solid, if our fullbacks do that all season i will be happy but could improve

greegs and ruben looked very solid, but stockport had nothing, they both played superb (especially greegs) but wait and see against better oppo

holdsworth - ok, some nice touches but didnt look match fit to me

taylor - busy first half not much more - injured

holdsworth - loves a tackle , busy all game broke it up, got caught in possesion afew times

furman - ran all day,but thought when in possesion got bypassed for spells, came into alot later on but fear he is being made a superstar (off other fan opinion) before he has earned it,could be speacial - dont add pessure please

parker - ran . skillful ,but nothing special for me -give him time

abbott - held up well, looked busy always, great touch, should have scored at the end, or passed to byfield - one or the other

byfield - looked interested, beat men , scared them, 10 mins is nothing- could be good, wait and see

lewi - ?

whittiker - did very well when he cam on, thought he scored with a cross at one point- super sub on the first day, but dont start him if you dont need to

MOM - ABOTT- WILL SCORE GOALS AT THIS LEVEL - WE NEED HIM - COULD BE A NEW HERO BUT UNLESS WE WIN PROMOTION OFF HIS GOAL HE IS NOT A LEGEND - just wanted to sort that now

i do fear we will be the draw specialist in this league but we are organised and i will give them time -may mean more than one season

FWIW I thought we matched you comfortably for 70 minutes but as one would expect from a team of kids we faded badly in that last twenty and you could easily have nicked it as we went to pieces a bit at that stage.

agree with that, you looked very solid for a young team but with 10 - 15 to go your centre halves looked to be breathing out of their asses and yor keeper new it ( hence the running to the half way line every 10 mins), good point for you boys

know its only first day but agin you seem to have talent - will need mor up front though

Well we're fitting square pegs into round holes at the moment. Our midfield is so young and inexperienced we almost have to play 5 in there to keep us solid. Sadly it leaves Thompson badly isolated upfront, he's no target man as you saw today. With 3 or more decent bodies in we'll do OK I reckon.

Moaner alert :shock::shock:

Dead right!

Been reading through the posts and it looks like they're out in force, which I find quite unbelievable seeing as it's only the first day of the new campaign.

I suppose we should be used to it by now.

If you don't like what you see, then don't go and watch.

Overall Team rating - 7 - Good effort

Brill - 6 Did everything he had too....kicking wasn't terrible and made a decent save towards the end but wasn't really tested.

:censored: - 7 Looked composed and pretty much did what a right back needs to do....£350k well earned from Eardley if he keeps putting in performances like that no world beater but steady and assured.

Gregan - 8 Solid had a decent game hardly tested won every header as usual...made one error half way through the first half with the usual lunge but other than that had a good game with a couple of good through balls later on in the second half.

Hazell - 7 Didn't have a great deal to do but looked steady, still needs to try to cut out the long balls from his game and maybe just play the ball on the deck if there is the option.

Gilbert - 6 Steady as the rest of the back line no special praise or any faults, whipped in one or two decent corners, we should have had someone pushing on the end of them.

Holdsworth - 7 Not his usual positon but thought he did quite well considering....pushed forward and was always making runs through to goal. Not sure how it would have turned out if he had got the ball but never the less made the option and looked eager.

Furman - 8 Ran and ran and ran great effor with the volley unlucky not to score but an equally great save from fon williams...always looking for the ball and looks a good partner for worthington.

Worthington - 7 Had a good game committed and aggressive, a better version of allott in my opinion but he will pick up yellow cards and maybe the odd red this season. Always in the oppositions face tho and pressures well forcing errors.

Taylor - 6 Didnt cause any major danger and went off halfway through the second half for injury, had a decent game and linked well with Abbott but will have many better games.

Parker - 7 - Did quite well got on the end of some of Hazell and Gregans hopefull longballs, looked dangerous in spurts will be a thorn in many teams side. 10 goals from him this season i guess....

Abbott - 8 - Poor mans Berbatov great touch and hold up play intelligent player, he will score a couple of beauts this season i have faith. Should have squared to byfield at the end, but sniffed goal like a typical hungry striker nothing to be ashamed of.

Subs

Whittaker - 7 Thought he did quite well pushed the game on in an unfamiliar left midfield role. Unlucky not to have scored with the cleared header off the line, will be a decent squad player this year. Perfect for scenarios where we are pushing for a win rather than defending a lead.

Byefield - 6 Not a great deal came his way, unlucky Abbott didnt give him the chance to hush the boo boys at the end of the game. Made some good runs but just didnt see much of the ball but the effort was there. I'd rather have him as back up striker as apposed to O'grady or Allessandra feel he is more of a threat.

Allessandra - 5 Did he touch the ball? Only got 5 minutes but never really got chance to get into the game the decision baffled me slightly as we semed to be pushing enough without any more changes needed. Rating not his fault just a lack of game time.

Overall i thought there wasn't much to worry about....ok we drew to a below average Stockport side but lets be honest it could have easily been a 1-0 win which would have satisified most...The team looked fit and worked hard to the final whistle if we can do that for the rest of the season we will do fine.

People expecting us to be world beaters in this division and win every game get a reality check it was never gonna happen.

Mostly agree, I would like to see the FB's push on more, we had little threat out wide. Was Taylor injured? Although it is difficult to make an impact with 4 constantly closing you down. Holdsworth, sorry DP, tell the lad he's a RB end of, not a wide midfielder - if he wants to play centre-mid/wide right he should have gone to another club. Attack after attack broke down due to his hesistancy - not his fault as I've said he's not a RW but he needs to realise this himself.

Well I've slept on yesterday's performance,

First reaction during and after the game is that it was poor. Both the match and the Latics performance.

The opposition weren't great and Latics failed to break them.

Stockport had a reputation last season for being tough to score against. Goalkeeper and 3 of the 4 defenders were probably their first pick from last season where the likes of Leicester failed to beat them. Maybe the siege mentality of a summer in administration was also present.

As for Latics, they did, for long periods, look like they'd never played together before. Which does make sense! But there did also seem to be some promise, things did get better as the game progressed and the passing improved and the chances came.

There were also 2 strong penalty appeals - the one at the RRE looked clear to me. Although he was looking for it, he drew the foul. I'd be interested to know if anybody behind the linesman saw it differently.

Some have commented that we looked good on the right side. I actually thought we looked a bit suspect defensively down that flank.

Some have commented that Gregan was immense. Slightly over the top - he did his job against poor opposition. Not knocking him, just playing down the adjectives used by others.

We did lack width. Taylor had to come inside looking for it a lot more than necessary. I'm used to him being the obvious outlet, but he wasn't used that way yesterday. Parker provided width at times, but often seemed to lack the anticipation I'd have expected from a player of his stature.

Abbott looks like he's got a lot of skill and will scare defences. A couple of midfielders actually got in to the box from open play which was rare last season and Byfield replacing Parker up front gave a different dimension to the attack at a time when we needed to test County in different ways.

Disappointed not to beat an opposition that was there for the taking. I can see the potential for improvement, so don't doubt DP can too. Before the game I was thinking mid-table this season. During and after I was pitching us for a relegation battle that we'd survive. This morning I'm back to mid-table, but there is possibly potential to get closer to the play-offs if DP works on them.

Good summary. Decent first match of the season. Thought Brill's kicking got better as the game went on. :censored: played well given that it was his first game and he is only 19! Gilbert was efficient too. Mid-table this season but hopes for next. 8 new players in the starting line up so we have to give them time. Stockport will struggle this season as they won't score enough goals imo. They battled well but on balance we could and should have won 2-0 and that would have been a fair result.

Blimey! If there's something to moan about you can guarentee an Oldham fan will find it!

I thought yesterday was a good performance - the kind of game we would have lost one-nil last season.

Considering they had never really played properly together, I thought they did well and were only denied by a blatant penalty that wasn't given, a couple of excellent saves by the 'keeper and desperate defending. Gregan deservedly got man of the match (but as been mentioned elsewhere, might be exposed against a better attack) Worthington and Furman also looked lively. Not sure where this came from about the forwards being lazy - I thought Abbott, Parker and Byfield did a lot of chasing. Byfield looked a different player from last year - if he puts the graft in like he did yesterday, I can see him scoring a few this season.

Before the game yesterday, really didn't know what to expect. The last time we had such a change in personnel in the close season was before we played Swansea on the first day a couple of years ago - now that was a disjointed performance by a team waiting to gel, and I thought it might be a similar case yesterday. However, as it turns out, I thought we were a lot closer to being the finished article this time around.

Travelled over from Norn Ireland for the game yeterday, first half not so good but second half we could have had 4 or 5 goals easy.

Stockport had the luck on their side, once we start firing on all cylinders we will be fine.

I'd say you held us comfortably for 70 mins - slightly different to 'matched', understandably you came for a point and maybe with the hope of nicking it.

Then, as you say, it kind of fell apart towards the end, but with a little luck and an awesome display by Fon Williams you held on.

Seems Ablett has got you well organised, and has done his best to find a formation that protects the lack of experience in the squad. If you can keep hold of the likes of Fon Williams and Oli Johnson - and hopefully be able to add a couple of new faces - you have something to build on and could well surprise all the pundits who have you nailed on for 24th place.

I honestly didn't begrudge you the point by the end. We huffed and puffed, but you did enough to hold on.

By the way, at the end I'm not sure Fon Williams was booked for time wasting so much as to stop him lamping your number 3!

I haven't read this thread or anything else on people's views about the match.

Personally I feel more satisfied with the performance than I did after the victory against Millwall on the opening day last season. Granted we weren't playing a team or Millwall's calibre, but I just got a feeling of a better organised bunch of comparative strangers, with more options and plenty of promise/optimism for the season ahead.

Good way of looking at it. If that last 20 minutes hadn't happened v Millwall it would have been an awful start!

Was the handball/penalty shout at the Chaddy end as nailed on as it looked?

Plus wtf happened with Furmans 'goal'? I'm convinced a few in the RRE went away believing we'd won 1-0.

i think every single person in the RRE thought it had gone in!

Blatant pen from where I was sat/stood in the Chaddy. Arms went up in front of his chest/face and it went straight into them. Right in front of the linesman too. Cast iron.

Won't see a better save this season than fon Williams' off Furman. First rate save from a first class knob

Technically it was handball, but it was booted at him from about a yard away and if he hadn't put his hands up I suspect it would have spread his nose the width of the six yard box.... so I guess it's one you always appeal for but you'd be gutted if it was given against you.
