Blade in Peace

Recommended Posts

I'll start by saying that I'm really looking forward to renewing our acquaintances with Oldham Athletic, it's just a shame that it's in the 3rd Division!

I've been to Boundary Park several times over the years, seen us win on the plastic pitch, have 2 sent-off before half time, in fact so much of the games I've seen, all merge into one.

The one that sticks in the mind is April 1994, when we sung 'You're down, with the Swindon Town' as loud as anything to the tune of Go West by the Pet Shop Boys. Only for us to come down with you improbable circumstances on the final day.

You lot shared a lot of our roller coaster ride in the 90's, only slid further down, and we had a bit of rivalry back then. You had some good players like Miligan and Holden, Ritchie and Palmer to name a few. I was disappointed when you went down.

Anyway, to tomorrow, I'll be travelling across with my lot, and really don't know what to expect from the Blades. We were attrocious last year, but have not lost many players, and with a new manager and a few additions surely can't be as bad again. My prediction for us lot next year will be somewhere between 1st and 24th, and nothing will really surprise me.

What I can promise, is that we have a decent following coming and they'll be rowdy and vociferous, so I'm hoping we can get behind the team and that the atmosphere will be good.

Be interested to hear back from you lot what you think of the game and the day in general. From our point of view, Quinn, Williamson and Lowton are our better players, but haven't got a clue how they will start, in terms of players or formation.

Whatever happens tomorrow, best of luck for the rest of the season, I hope it goes well for you. I'd be well happy with you lot finishing 2nd!

Evening

First difference you will notice about Boundary Park is that it has 3 stands rather than the conventional 4 Loooooonnnng story!

Always difficult to tell how a side coming down from the championship will do but don't expect an easy ride its a tough for the big sides coming down as the smaller sides raise their game and you may ind that its a few teams cup final coming to Bramhall Lane this season, just ask the Wendies or Dirty Leeds!

Being just about old enough to remember Dave Bassets blades and if they played today they would be finishing with 5 men every week they were always pretty feisty affairs those games. I expect tomorrow to be not to different and we might just catch you cold as you make the adjustment between leagues, and if he plays Chris Porter will get a hot reception.

Enjoy the match but not too much.

I'm not around atm but I'm at Hallam Uni and live very close to Bramhall Lane and I've been to a few games in the past 2 seasons, the last time I went was against Middlesborough when Darius Henderson missed 4 sitters and an open goal, I could sense that the open goal was the moment you went down. A couple of my mates who are Blades don't know what they're in for because they think they'll bounce straight back up with ease when it wasn't so easy for Leeds, Forest and of course the other Sheffield club.

Any idea how many tickets you've sold? Last I heard it was 3200

It's a bit of a wrong 'un, people's opinion about United under Bassett. They used to play percentages and a good amount of long-ball, but it certainly wasn't kick and rush, and there was some brilliant and exciting football mixed in.

The football was worse recently under Blackwell if I'm honest.

I'm hoping we've turned a corner, and looking for a good showing tomorrow. I haven't got a clue about what to expect from you lot, or any of the other teams in League 1 to be honest. Certainly not expecting an easy ride, but one thing you will notice tomorrow is that the Blades are bang up for it, and hopefully that will rub-off onto the players. 22 years of not playing the majority of the teams at this level, a change is as good as a rest.

One thing I can't quite get my head around reding a few posts on here is your apparant love-in with Sheffy Wendy? Is it the Owl in your badge?

And I thought you lot were OK! Haha!

Definitely looking forward to this match more than the Wendies.

Expect a fast paced game in front of a packed sh*thole of a ground.

I'm certainly glad we're playing you lot early doors because I think you're going to pick up quite a head of steam over the season.

Between 3500-4000 apparently.

The Blades you spoke to must be the only ones who think we'll walk it to be honest. Like I said above, nothing would surprise me, we could waltz it, we could even go down again if we're half as bad as we were last year. More likely, if I was tipping would be 4th - 10th.

What I meant was.....

I didn't seriously think that your Owl was in any way linked to the Wendy Parrot. Just that you had something in common!

The Wednesday are that MASSIVE, they probably own you anyway.

Alreet fella, I too remember some of thos encounters prior to and in the prem years and you were deffo not just a kick and rush team although you had some thugs (which any decent side needs) I will never forget that Beesley (was it Mark) fella stamping on someone as a corner was taken at BP, dirty bugger!

How do you feel about a Wednesdayite taking over?

Not entirely happy about it, in fact gutted to be honest, but I'll still be here long after he's gone and the show will go on.

When Bassett was interviewd by 5Live before we beat you on the plastic pitch, and he was asked how we would cope with the bounce, he replied that according to them lot the ball was always in the air so it wouldn't matter! CLASSIC!

It was Paul Beesley, he was a better player than he got credit for, but was a bit of a hard nut! Billy Whitehurst and Carl Bradshaw were as hard as enamel as well. Vinny was all show, all mouth and cowardly fouls, he would run ten miles from Big bad Billy Whitehurst!

Darren Beckford was another that I rated at you lot, aswell as the obvious Jobson, Irwin, Ritchie, Holden, Palmer, Milligan who are the ones I remember from back then. Nicky Henry too!

Who was that keeper who went to Everton, who ended up at the Lane and was rubbish for us. About 5 years ago, was it Paul Gerrard?

How good was he?

Great keeper, along with Brian Deane who was a decent striker (who was his prolific partner?).

He would have played for England if he had performed that well all the time.Cant remember a strike partner for Deane, seem to remember Glynn Hodges having a few good games though mate.

I mean before Hodges, had an african name! Was it Tony Aghana? Good striker!

Here's that 2-1 win for us in 1991. Those sendings off kinda spoilt the game really, we were 2-0 up when they happened. Bit soft too.

Blazing hot day that were, and I remember that Bryan Adams song being towards the end of its marathon number-one-in-the-charts run and them playing it over the PA at half time.

Hate Simon Tracey with a passion, Sean McCarthy clean through, probably going to score the goal that may have kept us up and he proceeds to Schumacher style take him out… walks without even looking at the ref….free-kick awarded…Alan Kelly comes on for Sheff Utd.. they cling on to the point they thought made them safe. Oh how I laughed when Chelsea sent them down four days later. Nothing personal to our Sheff U visitor but that Bassett team was a team of :censored:ing thugs, that kicked, spat, bit and generally cheated their way up the divisons. Gannon, Hoyland, Ward, Gayle, Deane, Agana, Jones all dirty twats….

I remember the dick head fans( grown men) who were spitting on some young oldham fans( young teenagers) after we beat at BP I cant remember if it was our first time in the prem ( Old First Div). We signed a fullback I think from Leeds on the friday and we played his first game away against Liverpool. Anyway he scored against Sheff Utd at this match.. Back to the dickheads they were wearing those stripey :censored: pants, I exepect them to be here again today at BP saying how :censored: the ground is and how big they are....

Although this Blade Fan is decent and a credit to his club, I have nothing but bad memories about the club...apart from the 5.0 away win we had on new years day...

Glynn Snodin - signed on the eve of the season to replace the crocked Andy Barlow, scored the opener in the vid above. 7/9/91
