Diamond Formation

Recommended Posts

Is the diamond formation as effective as we think it is?

If I remember, the unbeaten run we went on, we played a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 with forte playing on the left (where he scored most of his goals from) and Winchester on the right.

Also think Jones is more effective in the middle than on the left of the diamond.

So why did we change from that formation to the diamond?

If we get a striker in and get forte fit. Could we not play

Rachubka

Wilson

Wilson

Elokobi

Mills

Winchester

Jones

Kelly

Forte

Mellis

New striker

I suspect Bradford City abandoned any pre-determined team shape and just went for it at Chelsea, didn't do too badly with their reckless play though.

I don't want to see a chess match when I go to BP with possession being the main aim, give me plenty of flair and penalty area action, even it means conceding the odd goal (we concede them anyway as it is).

We played the best football I've see us play this season using the diamond.

The advantage is that you can get men into the box quicker the problem sometimes with 4-4-1-1 is that the striker can sometimes become isolated.

I think we'd lose something from Winchester if we stuck him wider right. If we wanted to go to 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 then we need to sign a right winger then you would also have to choose 2 from Kelly Winchester and jones.

If we stay with the diamond then we can keep those 3 in then we need to sign a striker and possible someone who can play at the head of that diamond or a striker preferably a big target man.

Funny how we fans view the games we watch, GlossopLatic. I think we played better in a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1....in particular Jones and Kelly with Jones playing centrally slightly ahead of Kelly but both players supporting each other in offence/defence. Forte looks lost when playing in a narrow left spot or up front and Jones is ineffective playing left of diamond.

Time to revert to accommodating Forte where he is most effective at wide left and Jones where he can control the game in the middle as they did for up to November.

Come on BP you are better than that!

I certainly think the diamond has brought the best out of joey mills, in the absence of a winger he seems to be bombing up the line a lot more

Spot on! B Wilson gets forward a lot too-its just a pity that he cannot cross the ball

Interesting how we do see things differently for me it was the game against Coventry and that first half performance against Bradford where we looked as good as we have played since shez first season.

For me the problem with forte is less his position more his fitness he's been in and out of the team recently and when he has played he hasn't been running as freely and hasn't accelerated away from players like he can do. I don't know if he needs an extensive lay off or if perhaps he needs to see a specialist or perhaps he's just :censored:ed but wherever he plays at the moment he doesn't look the same player.

Can't remember which formation it was but the first half against Bradford was insane. The movement from the midfield was incredible Bradford couldn't keep up.

I think the problem with Forte is the position he has been asked to play in.........he doesn't look comfortable or happy playing up front or behind a striker. It can't be a coincidence that playing wide left In a midfield 4 has brought him freedom to use his pace and more importantly goal opportunities. And if that means it stifles Mills then that is a small price to pay if Forte is happy and scoring.

The point I was making with this thread was the fact we went 10 games unbeaten last season and 13 unbeaten this season while playing the 4-4-2.

Also we seem to concede for fun now whereas before we had a solid defence!

Except we didn't. There was no way you could describe our formation during our unbeaten run last season as 4-4-2. It was easily 4-1-4-1. We had 5 in midfield with Korey sitting deep, almost to the point of playing as a spare man in a back 5.

Okay it probably wasn't dead set 4-4-2 but we played philliskirk so it changed from 4-1-4-1 to 4-4-1-1 to 4-4-2. Either way we had more in midfield and better balance
