  1. I can recommend the Nottingham Arms in Tewkesbury as a decent pub. The Black Bear was even better but sadly closed last time I looked. I'd join you for a pint but am away over Xmas!
  2. Strictly speaking this is a bit off-topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread in case that was seen as even worse behaviour! I wasn't previously aware of this, but learnt recently that in March 1946 Stockport County played the longest ever (allegedly) match at home v Doncaster Rovers, 3 hours 23 minutes, in a Div 3 North cup tie. 2-2 at full-time, and no further goals after 20 minutes of ET. The rule then was that the teams played on until a "golden" goal was scored, and as eventually it got dark the match was called off. The replay was won 4-0 by Rovers. It was said that fans left the first game, went home for tea, and came back to watch the end of the match! Sort of on-topic maybe, involving different rules etc. Then again maybe I need to get out more.
  3. That was the FA Cup, we lost 3-1 I think. My only visit to Anfield, I stood on the Kop and survived.
  4. Absolutely magnificent sentence, says so much. Well done sir!
  5. Sorry, I can imagine how pissed off you were, but this did make me smile! One day, we'll be top of the Championship, going for promotion to the Prima Donna League, playing great football, bowling green pitch, pies in abundance (at correct temperature) and 10k+ Latics fans will be in a state of stupefaction, saying to each other - this can't be happening! We can but hope!
  6. OK, leaving aside the blue touch paper that a reference to racism can involve, surely as a matter of principle we should get our players' names right, or if that's too difficult, call him Nepo or G as suggested above? And does one Latics fan have to call another a doofus? Really? On a day when we've won 5-1?
  7. Fake news?! When did we last score 5 in a league game?
  8. Whilst I recognise the hostility to this tournament, this was a timely win given recent results, and the win bonuses are vital given our financial worries.
  9. Matt Chambers was both a genuine fan but also scrupulously objective in his reporting on the club, a real professional. Shame there aren't more like him in what we used to call Fleet St. I wish him all the very best for the future and will miss his reporting.
  10. Steady on. All keepers do it, and Ripley was a regular culprit last season. It's up to referees to negate it by cards and by adding time on to compensate.
  11. I was there! My one and only time standing on the Kop. We lost 3-1 if I remember but played well. Jimmy Case scored a thunderbolt.
  12. I admire and respect Shez for all that he has done. Unfortunately it's a results business, and this season he wasn't getting them. As has been said many times already, you need to let him go. In fact, perhaps you need a holiday from OWTB and we need a holiday from you! I think the former premier league footballer to whom you refer was the one and only (thank God) David Dunn, no? Now, he may have been a decent footballer. As a manager he was out of his depth, so please don't cite him in evidence for the great achievements of Shez last season......unless you're gong to tell us Shez is a better manager than Mourinho?! Just let it go. We might as well sit around and call for Joe Royle's return. Won't happen, pointless.
  13. Er.......I think we maybe need the points and therefore our first choice XI.
  14. Yes, I was going to mention Graham Bell. The then England manager Don Revie came to Boundary Park to watch him, that's how good he was. Plus he was from Middleton, so in my biased view had to be good.
  15. Good question, was wondering that myself. There was definitely some kind of licensing issue a while ago which meant we would have had to pay lots for the right to play it. For me we have to keep it, incredibly nostalgic. A previous post mentioned Everton and Z Cars which is an obvious connection, but unless my ears deceived me did I hear Watford on MOTD recently coming out on the pitch and Z Cars playing there in the background?
  16. Is it something we need to get to the root of?
  17. I remember that game well. Was it 1-1 at h/t? Groves ran riot and it absolutely pelted down. I was about 13-14 and for some reason stood at the RRE, uncovered in those days. Got absolutely soaked but what a match!
  18. And after last season with its grand total of 31 was it in the league: we can score goals!
  19. Even if you're being heavily ironic that post still deserves a downboat!!
  20. "These posts". Hang on a minute. Before history gets completely re-written: (1) The Hughes incident was years ago and largely irrelevant to this season. If it is to count against Sheridan, why did Corney bring him back twice, and why did Sheridan save us from the drop twice? Scant evidence of lack of man-management there. (2) Capitulation at Rotherham? 1-1 away to a decent side with 20 minutes to go. Final result yes a shocker. But I seem to remember a guy who went on to be the most successful club manager of all time not far from BP suffering a similar fate. Was he sacked? Was he "lacking in man management"? What's happened has happened and we all need to move on. I really hope RW gets the job permanently, he deserves it. The fact that he's off to a flyer after a mere 4 games does not give anyone the right to traduce Sheridan as "losing the dressing room" or "lacking in man management". The man deserves more respect, and BB80's defence of him is as noble as it is justified. We will never know if Shez would have kept us up or not this season. What we do - or should - know is that he is and always will be a club legend.
  21. Hear hear. I don't normally like to see Latics fans tearing lumps out of each other but this is one of the best correctives and handing-your-arse-back-to-you posts I've seen. Good for you bb80.
  22. Good point re the travelling. Also I doubt whether, unlike the "Premier" League internationals, he travels first class when representing his country.
