I know!

I like Whits but some people need to get in the real world.

Yep , I also like him.

Links up well with Allott, and both playing well enough to keep Maher out, who came with great credentials , who you might say ?

This poll would be interesting after Whittaker has played for us for two seasons.....

Or even a full season, remember Macca getting all the hype after half a season (and he was good) but then the form dropped off and he only had the odd good game and glimpses of his early form in between.

aso you didnt see Wellens that much then

Yes. If hitting hollywood balls that more than likely miss the intended player and shouting a lot makes a good midfielder, then Wellens was the best in the league. Never rated him, was glad when he left.

I must admit i wasn't upset either when Wellens left, you can say what you want about players needing a bit of 'nice' arrogance but wellens was just rude, full of ego and to be honest pretty disrespectful to the fans who generally held him in high regard. He was treated well by everyone at the club, yet when he made a dash for the cash he didn't have word of mention for anyone at Oldham.

No way in a million years would i want him back at the club again burnt his bridges as far as im concerned.

and why was he disrespectful for the fans what did he do? Don't say he was disrespectful for taking the more money option like he owed us something because people who expect a player to show loyalty to a club when another one offers him a better deal are NAIVE and living in a socialist paradise where knowone chases profit.

Nothing to do with the money fair play to him if thats what he sees as important. I just think when he does things like stride past in the away end at swansea in his leather jacket like a big time charlie when he wasnt playing doing this big act thats hes one of us whilst many of our fans are singing his name 'theres only one richie wellens' after working all week and travelling down there and paying 20 odd quid in its a bit out of order. In this example he should of gone in the main stand or wherever and at least then he'd be honest about not giving a monkeys about the club. The least he could do is give thanks for the fans support during his time when he left less than 4 months later.

Dont get me wrong i dont expect everyone of our players to care about the club as much as say Chris Taylor but IMO that doesn't give any of the players the right to take the piss

Thats fair enough I suppose I agree with most of what youve said there. I wasn't at Swansea so can't comment on that people will handle the fame thing Wellens did have an ego and it was part of the player to a large extent I never met the guy so can't say what he was like in person although since he left I haven't heard him slag of the club as such and he did come back and play in the Ernie Cooksey benefit game am I right.

I've just read through this thread and I've got to say there is some absolutely :censored:e talked in it.

People not rating Wellens and being glad when he left is absolute crap, it just shows how little some people know about football.

Wellens was immense in his time at Latics, the problem we had is that the team relied on him too much as everything went through him hence when he was missing through injury or suspension we were stuffed as we had nobody else on the books with even a half his talent.

For people to say they didn't rate him is quite frankly just stupid.

P.S And he's a way better player than Whittaker.

I, somewhat pettily, had a mod edit my post for using the word 'Christ' the other day.

I have never quite understood the dislike of Wellens. Bar a couple of 'golden oldies' he's probably been the most talented player we have had since we dropped to Division 3. He joined us as we were gunning for promotion, when we failed he moved onto bigger and better things. It wasn't his fault we failed, he was good to watch, played with tenacity and missed 2 (?) games the whole time he was here. On a playing basis what is there to not like about him? I'd love to see him in todays team. Remember Shez's first season....when we played superb football, with Ronnies playing staff, when we made the play-offs having topped the league, when we were wheeling out Wellens week after week despite his back problems......tell me....was that the time when 'everything had to go through him'? Was that the time when he 'went missing'?

As for those who claim he was crap () , well, do fans still discuss crap players 18 months after they left?? You are all either fools, or more likely, bitter.

'No God' slogans for city's buses

The posters could run from January

Bendy-buses with the slogan "There's probably no God" could soon be running on the streets of London.

The atheist posters are the idea of the British Humanist Association (BHA) and have been supported by prominent atheist Professor Richard Dawkins.

The BHA planned only to raise £5,500, which was to be matched by Professor Dawkins, but it has now raised more than £36,000 of its own accord.

It aims to have two sets of 30 buses carrying the signs for four weeks.

The complete slogan reads: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

As the campaign has raised more than anticipated, it will also have posters on the inside of buses as well.

The BHA is also considering extending the campaign to cities including Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Professor Dawkins said: "Religion is accustomed to getting a free ride - automatic tax breaks, unearned respect and the right not to be offended, the right to brainwash children.

This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think - and thinking is anathema to religion

Professor Richard Dawkins

"Even on the buses, nobody thinks twice when they see a religious slogan plastered across the side.

"This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think - and thinking is anathema to religion."

Hanne Stinson, chief executive of the BHA, said: "We see so many posters advertising salvation through Jesus or threatening us with eternal damnation, that I feel sure that a bus advert like this will be welcomed as a breath of fresh air.

"If it raises a smile as well as making people think, so much the better."

But Stephen Green of pressure group Christian Voice said: "Bendy-buses, like atheism, are a danger to the public at large.

Stephen Green of pressure group Christian Voice

"I should be surprised if a quasi-religious advertising campaign like this did not attract graffiti.

"People don't like being preached at. Sometimes it does them good, but they still don't like it."

However the Methodist Church said it thanked Professor Dawkins for encouraging a "continued interest in God".

Spirituality and discipleship officer Rev Jenny Ellis said: "This campaign will be a good thing if it gets people to engage with the deepest questions of life."

She added: "Christianity is for people who aren't afraid to think about life and meaning."

The buses with the slogans will run in Westminster from January.

rofl at some of the comments on here. If Wellens was as good as most people made out why the hell was he playing for us!!?

Wellens was a good player, but the thing is, he'd try the fancy stuff too much, 9/10 it didn't work, but the one time it did it looked good and made him look like Ronaldinho. I'd rather have Whitaker, who gets about the pitch offering support, he's not a bad passer either. But instead of trying to do fancy stuff he does the basics and does it well.

This is quite intriguing how much Wellens and Whittaker split peoples opinions about them both.

Like when Wellens was compared with Kilkenny, its pretty difficult to compare the two when Wellens has played 3 or 4 times as many games as Whittaker or Kilkenny.

I think it's fair to say that Whittaker could be a better player than Wellens, but we'll need to see him for another season or two to really tell that one.
