It's been a snorefest of a test that we now look certain to lose. Never ever return to Cardiff again and get some better players in! I can't believe I thought our bowlers would have got the aussies out for under 250 no problems!

oh ye of little faith...

draw is on the cards! :tongue1:

If Collingwood and Flintoff can stay in for a while. Collingwood was quite lucky to still be in the middle a few times, maybe thats the luck we need.

Any chance of rain down there?

some but nothing bad.

i can see a frustrating aussie afternoon on the horizon.

lets hope so.

We definitly need a change in the attack for the next test. they don't look like being able to 6 or 7 wickets never mind 20.

Yeah, cant see us bowling the Aussies out twice in a test playing like this!

O/T...

Who is the picture of in your sig Nava? Dawkins has not yet played a game for the Broncos so how would you have managed to get a picture of him in a Broncos shirt/helmet?

Fail! Even an average Aussie side is battering us, this will be an innings defeat, no bottle or backbone in the side. They haven't the desire to bat three sessions. What a let-down after all the hype.

This average Aussie side just beat SA away, they might be average against the standards of the last 15 years but they are still pretty good. We made a decent 1st innings total, it's not like we lost it on the first day. I think there is life in this series yet, we need to go back to the drawing board in the bowling plans.

And come up with what?

The way I see it our bowlers are (in order):

Freddie

Ickle Jimmy

Broad

Swann

Onions

Sidebottom

Soft Lad

Rashid...

...The second last bloke ever

Panesar.

Is there an unknown that should be picked? I don't see one.

yes they did but SA blow hot and cold and seem to have the attitude of 'well we beat them in Oz so we can relax at bit at home', you only have to look at their attitude over here last summer, they deservedly beat us in the test series and then let's be honest a poor England team hammered them in the one dayers as the SA's weren't that bothered. I'll stand by what I said, the Aussies are average but the one thing they have got and have always had is desire our lot had it in '05 then lost it getting pissed, having tea with Tony and on open top bus rides. The Aussies regrouped, won the Ashes back immediately at a canter, celebrated quietly before immediately planning on how to retain them this year and therein lies our problem at every level of every sport in the UK. Overhyped...where limited success and failure are celebrated in equal amounts.

On the other hand....4 tests remaining and this 'aint over yet as Lenny sang...

You forget Min Patel below Panesar.

No, we have about the best bowlers in the side, I dare say Monty will have the rest of the summer off and if Sidebottom is fit he should add some useful variation. I'm not sure it's a much worse attack than we had when we beat their stronger batting lineup (apart from Simon Jones, who was awesome in every way that series), but then we had a strategy for every Convict batsman and we made them work. Not sure we are there at the moment.

There's that guy who made his debut at Headingley a year or two ago, came from nowhere, surely must be worth another go?

I think what has become clear is that we didn't bat well enough.

The top 5 got themselves out. That probably cost 250 runs. We could have batted them out of the game in the first innings. We didn't and they have made us pay.

As for the bowling, Flintoff and Anderson have had their moments and Swann has looked tight at times but didn't turn the ball as much as expected. Monty was ok but, as ever, lacked variation. If the batsman knows what's coming every ball you're only going to get him out with a mistake. Broad looked like a clueless kid and that raises questionmarks not just about him but also the support his captain and other senior players have given him on the pitch. Ultimately we lacked variety from all bowlers throughout their innings. On a good wicket you need more than one player to deliver and none did.

The series is certainly not dead. If our good batsmen do their job properly next game, and our bowlers mix it up a little more (whoever is selected) then regaining the Ashes is certainly back on.

I think I'd leave Panesar out. He's had a long time to improve and vary his game and not done it.

I'd bring in Harmison (because he scares Aussies) and toss a coin on Broad or Sidebottom, probably going for the Yorkshireman.

I agree completely, especially about the bowlers.

It's hardly like the 2005 series established our dominance. We had 11 (+1) players who were pretty nearly all in the form of their lives at the same time and who stayed fit, the series was still incredibly close and it came right for us at the key moments. It's not like we had another 11 players knocking on the door ready to play at that level - and we were at home, and had a long established and brilliant coaching set up. We would have lost the series if McGrath hadn't twisted his ankle playing football in a warm up. As for the Aussie's I really am not having it that the Saffers weren't up for a home series against them! That Smith is a tosspot but I'm not doubting his desire for a second.

The pitch is exactly what we don't want. Other than in Wales.

Freddie is our main guy. So long as we don't everbowl him.

Ickle Jimmy in the right circumstances is great, and in this country is an absolute must.

Broad I like. He has great potentil and I wouldn't think of dropping him. He's had the odd bad moment but really rushes the batsman.

Swann. Well we don't have a decent spinner so he's best of a bad lot.

Onions has done nothing wrong. Due a chance.

Sidebottom. Hmm, I've got to be honest I don't like him. Not sure if it is his sheepy background, long curly hair or that he isn't that good, but he isn't up in my list at all.

Harmison. Why is this lad so crap. He has everything. But he's been rubbish for too long. Don't touch him.

Rashid. Behind Swann.

Panesar. Has there ever been a slower learner than this guy. He is inept at so many things and his specialist subject he is average at. I'd ditch him at club level, never mind above.

The mock players they fear.

Really? I don't see them mocking Flintoff, or the Boer ringer. They might abuse them, although I don't think they even do much of that against people who won't be rattled. Harmy is in the same category as Hick was, every Convict fielder was under instructions to make their way to near him every time he came out to bat and say, "morning, Braveheart," to him. Just the same, enough talent to be the best in the world (Harmison should be the No 1 fast bowler) but it's just not there in the head.
