Pitch protest

Recommended Posts

... that guy who strolled onto the pitch during game V Ipswich? and sat down on the centre spot?

Living embodyment of the concept of the fans being the twelfth man. :chubb:

The Magistrate said something to the effect that the accused has supported Latics for many years and has suffered enough without imposing further punishment!

I remember watching this from my seat in the Lookers Upper (those were the days). Brilliant.

Was he a bit of a hardcase? It's just that normally when somebody goes on a pitch some jumped up pro gets in the trespasser's face.....

thought it was palace we played that day, lost 3-1 or am i talking bubbles....

Danny Dj'd around the area for years with his OAFC 'flashing light' at the front of his set up, I think one of his siblings is still a programme seller on matchdays - Danny has followed the club for years and had just had enough

Nah! Danny's not a hardcase, he's just a genuine long-time fan who had had enough of the crap that was being served up, and the fact that no-one seemed to be listening (Ring any bells?).

When he strolled onto the pitch it was the highlight of the season. Amazingly, there was no major confrontation, and one of the team (Can't remember who) extended his hand to pull Danny up, saying "Ok, you've made your point, don't get yourself in any more trouble mate".

The police and stewards that day were remarkably calm, and treated Danny with respect when they escorted him off the pitch to the biggest ovation heard at BP for many a season.

He's still a regular at home games (When he can scrounge a ticket!), and drinks in the Primrose View and Bank Top Tavern.

It was done before the Football Banning Order Act was created though. If you did that these days, expect a 3 year banning order or even a life-time banning order issued by the club (not a bad thing I know).

Strangely enough another lad did the same thing during the 3-0 home defeat to Grimsby the following February, that lad got a hefty fine and a banning order - just shows it helps when the Magistrate knows you and your family, as in the case of Danny.

Be doing some of us a favour to get a banning order...

I would argue that if someone is making a peaceful protest as was the case at BP than a banning order would be inappropriate... I think the guy at Grimsby clearly had a :censored: solicitor / or it was anything but peaceful...

Does anyone remember that guy who strolled onto the pitch during game V Ipswich? and sat down on the centre spot? Wonder what he might do on Saturday if he is still watching us now?

Danny was pictured sat in the centre-circle on the back of one of that season's BTB, needless to say I couldn't miss the opportunity of blowing the picture up and adding my own speech bubble, (Summat about him tapping Redmond, Fleming or Henry for a sub) anyone who knows Danny will know thuis to be accurate! Said modified picture took pride of place on his local's notice board for years.

He spent the whole game stating "he's had enough, he was invading the pitch", he was egged on a little as no-one thought he would do it - then before we knew it he was sat on the centre-spot!

I've never seen anything like that game. By late on in the second half the edge of the pitch was littered with season tickets and Latics shirts, discarded by disgruntled fans.

We're going the right way to seeing that again, mind.

I've an idea for a protest. Get as many people down to the ground as possible at the next home game and cheer the team on as if you actually support them.

Too radical?

No cynicism? No hate chanting? No calling for the managers head?

Praising? Encouraging? Making an atmosphere at Boundary Park?

It'll never catch on.

Remember this. He wasnt far off me in the Paddock that day. Plenty of people were urging him on from the Paddock just as he was debating whether to actually go through with it. He simply walked to the half way line unchallenged and sat himself down. There wasnt even a steward anywhere near him so he had the freedom to simply stroll onto the pitch.

Best standing ovation i've ever seen at Boundary Park.
