sjk2008 Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Anyone got any tips? I'm a 24 yr old male and I'm searching for Car insurance but i refuse to pay ridiculous money. Anything under £1800 would be great. I have pass plus too. Any tips anyone?? Thanks in advance!! Quote
Macca Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 MoneySavingExpert Have a read of that. There's no one company that is cheapest for everyone. You'll have to do some searching. Quote

First insurance i've had in my own name too (23 yr old male) so was expecting a ridiculous amount. I got quite a good rate around £1,100 from Admiral and Elephant.co.uk (they are sister companies, so you will get similar quotes), than the ridiculous £2,500 upwards the rest were offering. Quote
opinions4u Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Try Admiral. Give the various price comparison sites too. My eldest got a quote of £186,000 for a 5 year old Corsa! Quote

Cheapest I have found on those comparison sites is £2K! Im hopefully going to pass my test in October and get myself a 1.2 Fiat Punto Grande (Not new). Thing is, im 25 in December, is it worth waiting those extra 2 months or so if the insurance were to be significantly lower because i turn 25? Quote

By the way, get your finances in order. Cars cost a lot to keep on the road, so set money aside out of every pay-packet to cover the next lot of bills. Otherwise you end up not being able to keep your car on the go. Quote
Ackey Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 I'm with Direct Line (I like their uninsured drives add on and I had my flat-contents insurance with them too). Got a quote of about £750 in the end (25 so comes down a little, but it was my first insurance). At one points I was quoted £2,600 by Admiral for insuring a car that cost me £1,100. I actually laughed until he hung up. One caution with the price comparison sites is that they will call and call and call. No matter what time of day or night. Quote

I have had my license officially for 5 years, but not driven really since I passed my test (wanted the license done with before uni), so that might have something to do with it. But yeah, was expecting much more damage.. Quote
garcon Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Mostly depends what you're driving. Anything remotely sporty or premium try Privilege. If it's more run of the mill, Direct Line. It's definitely worth trying one of the compare websites, if only to laugh at the Aviva quote... Quote

maddog Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Hastings direct for me, but I'm not a young or new driver, and have 9 years protected NCD, and legal cover, etc. When I got my first insurance at 21 with a shed of a car, I paid £900 3rd party. Then that halved when I moved to AXA a year later. I hate renewal time... Quote
futchers briefs Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Either way, it seems to be the policy of them all to reward their loyal, existing customers who continue to 'not claim' with a dearer renewal???? How does that work? Different insurance companies target different audiences, so try as many as possible. But for every person who has 'falsely' claimed 'personal injury' after a minor crash, just to 'earn a few bob' i'd like to say on behalf of all the honest motorists out there - Cheers for keeping our premiums up you *******! In a related topic, green flag breakdown cover tried to charge me 18% more this year compared to last, for the same cover, car, address, everything - and bragged about how wonderful they were, as my renewal quote included a 15% no call out discount. Needless to say, I didn't renew. Quote
sjk2008 Posted August 12, 2010 Author Posted August 12, 2010 So bottom line, when im 25 my insurance quote will be significantly lower, regardless of me never driving before? I also heard somewhere that it could be lowered with some companies if you put your parents as additional drivers on your policy? Especially if they have both been driving for 15+ years and had no claims etc in the last 5??? Is this the case? Quote
Ackey Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 I'd never driven on my own insurance and minimally on my dads since passing at 17 and got my first insurance at 25 on a 1.6 Megane for about £700. Quote

Best thing to do, unfortauntely, is try the price comparisons with that info Further to shat someone said about the calls. Makes sure you tick no contact by phone One company in particualar was relentless, never sure which it came from. I am not anywhere near the same position, so no point giving you my quotes. Well OK, £249 full comp, me and the wife. But it's only a Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec. Edited August 12, 2010 by singe Quote
outoftheblue Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 It's always worth considering buying a classic car and insuring it through specialist classic car insurers or owners clubs. As an eighteen year-old (Admittedly a very long time ago!) I bought an MG B and joined the MG Owners Club, which allowed me to insure the car Fully comprehensive with them for just £110. In today's money and climate, I reckon that would equate to around £900. Quote

outoftheblue Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 I heard you the first time ;) To be honest though, I think there may be a difference between a 2.5 warrior and say, a 1500 midget, 1300 escort, 1300 Beetle or the likes. And if it's a pre-1973 model there is no road fund to pay. (Unless that's another policy the government have u-turned). Quote
BlueJazzer Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Age doesn't really make a diff these days. I'm 38, a firefighter that drives the pumps (apparently my blue lights drving course was supposed to stand me in good stead), 7 yrs no claims, 20 yrs experience..... £650 on an X5 diesel. Its a bleedin ripoff. Quote
Lookers_Carl Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Having worked on he other side of the fence (For Esure, who did Esure, First Alternative, Sainsburys, Halifax, Sheilas Wheels), most of the bigger companies will have an 'outbound' team, who will call and call and call chasing up quotes. As you are 24, just make sure you double check the compulsary accidental damage excesses (assuming you are going fully comp, which believe it or not, is actually cheaper than 3rd party fire and theft sometimes). , as in the event of an accident, this will be added to any voluntary accidental damage excess. And re the comparison site, again just have a proper look at the quotes, and check whether they include the add ons Quote
