  1. Saw Bob come out of the player's entrance with tears in his eyes after being told he was being transferred to Mansfield. It was not really de rigueur for a 15 year old to show such emotions at the time, but I confess now to having having a little eye-watering episode that evening. He was the epitome of the professional player every club needs and if we'd have had him in our team this season we WOULD have escaped the drop. Johnny Colquhoun got me out of a few canings as the Deputy Head at school was a great fan of his and often forgot my punishment after I'd eulogised on Johnny's performance the previous weekend !
  2. I've not been watching Latics since 1895, rubbed shoulders with Cloughie, made a lot of money through work or had a great football career but am pretty good at knowing if I like somebody after speaking with them for about 5 minutes. Unfortunately I need to see someone play/work for a lot longer than that to assess their ability, unlike some of the posters on here.
  3. Certainly should be. My brother and myself donated £50 quid each from the previous season's ticket offer to the Club, not Corney's personal finances. Oh and the promised picture/certificate or whatever it was never materialised.
  4. It was stated that Benteke was "one for the future" so it's not really surprising we would offer a continuation if the price is right.
  5. You must have watched him a hell of a lot in Ireland to make a statement like that. I prefer to give someone a dozen or so games before completely dismissing their competence.
  6. Giving up isn't an option though, it's a reason we're in this position. Players who haven't got enough bottle, unambitious owners, people who would sooner sit at home watching overpaid prima donnas on Sky and BT and way back a chronic mis-management of the funds available when we were in the premier division. I meant realists in the sense we are where we are and have to get on with it regardless of who manages or plays for us.
  7. Yes he's a bang average defensive midfield player who gets then ball and passes to someone with more ability, not Franz Beckenbauer ! We'd all wish for better but some of us are realists.
  8. 1. I don't know ( but if he hasn't he's not the man we all hope to take us forward ). 2. He doesn't have to ( I'm not one of the ones who need to know every minutiae of the club I support's business ).
  9. Take your point but that was on firmer, dryer pitches and think it's a bit more attritional at this time of year and in our position (i.e. you have to put your foot in a bit more).
  10. Bit lightweight in midfield for me. Left-footed Nepo playing on the right; out of form Pringle on left; Byrne, who I've yet to see make a tackle, in middle. Great when we've got the ball but what about when they get it ?
  11. Depends where you sat, it didn't block the view from my seat. Anyway the cost of the renovations you suggest are way beyond our means.
  12. We'd all like new stands and better facilities but priority should be on the pitch. Personally I never really noticed those MASSIVE beams during my years in the Chaddy, I was to busy watching the football !
  13. This 100 times over. The only one who shows any anticipation is Doyle, the rest are like statues. They're like defenders who have been told to play upfront. So any pass/cross into space looks a poor one. Most crosses at our level are into areas where players should be arriving if they have a desire to score. A modicum of schoolboy learnt movement by the rest of our forwards would reap rewards.
  14. It really doesn't matter what we, as supporters, feel the fact of the matter is that ANY manager needs time to succeed or fail and until we give them those opportunities we are destined to underachieve. Certainly the advent of these message boards has upped the pressure on an already tenuous job.
  15. We really need to stop this knee jerk reaction after every match. Yes I know it's a bit disappointing we haven't taken three points tonight but I thought that some individual performances deserved credit. Moimbe, obviously had a good game, but to me man of the match was George who really seems to be growing as a player. With Gerrard obviously not 100% I thought he covered brilliantly for his partner's immobility and will prove to be a great asset to our club. It's a time for players to step up to the mark and in my opinion Edmundson has. I noticed that on Saturday after the goalmouth melee late on he congratulated Hamer on his defensive block which shows the team spirit we'll need to survive this season. As I've said before whatever happens this season we should start the next one with the current manager, albeit with a decent defensive minded assistant. ,
  16. Heard he had a shouting match with the bench in his penultimate game, Rochdale ? So that may be of some significance.
  17. Clarke's legs had gone last season but he helped grind out results on a home "midden"; Wilson hasn't looked a first choice for a couple of seasons for me; the loss of/injury restrictions to Gerrard have hampered an already threadbare central defence. Plus Wellens, as has been well documented, has been doing the job alone whilst a rookie manager. The one thing that can propel clubs of our type forwards is sticking with a manager for a decent amount of time and not making knee jerk sackings after a few bad results. For me whatever division we are in next season I'd be happy with our current manager in charge.
  18. Fane for all his undeniable faults does, along with perhaps Gardner sometimes, at least run forward with the ball when we are under the cosh thus relieving pressure. We'd all like a "Bryan Robson" or "Ken Knighton" type running the ball out with something tangible at the end of it but I'm afraid all we've got is Ousmane Fane, who tries his bollocks off most games, which is something we've really needed this season. If we can get someone better all well and good but until then he's in every week for my money.
