Mis-heard footy songs......

Recommended Posts

Try singing "no way never" - you'll find it makes sense - instead of what has been your own personal tribute to Gunnar Halle!

That could work, but the real version is a bit boring, think I will stick to my Scandinavian tribute

no way never is a burnley song

They play in claret - the cheap man's burgundy!

Extract from the book 'Drinking Burgundy' by Youngman Carter (1966)

” ‘Burgundy at it’s best overtops Claret at its best.’ This is the last word on the subject by the greatest of all wine writers, Maurice Healy. He goes on to say that a really great Burgundy is a rare thing, possibly a once in a lifetime experience, but fine old Claret is not hard to come by if your pocket permits.”

It is definitely "No Ney Never"

I don't think you can really say it is a Burnley song. I accept that they sing it and I do not know the history enough to say who sung it first but we have always sung it for the seventeen years I've been watching Latics so to me this is one of our traditional songs. I don't know whether Burnley sing all the verses either

Well besides a couple in the chaddy end we dont sing all the verses only this. It has also been sung since I started going 12 years ago but tbh I can remember reading somewhere and with the rivalry of them 2 clubs its defo their song Id rather sing hate man u and city too. Although any Yorkshire or Lashers song is always good as I truly truly hate them.

Well besides a couple in the chaddy end we dont sing all the verses only this.

I can think of at least three of us so that'll do me.

It used to be said that we had a song about every team in the country but we do tend to be quite restricted in what we sing these days.

oafcok put a thread on here just before the Forest gama where people posted their favourite all time Latics songs and then we went through the vast majority of them at the City Ground.

Maybe we could try that before games. People can request songs they want to sing the next day.

Diego can't play this game though, I've been there when he's walked upto a DJ to hand him a request (or two hour playlist to be more accurate). The guy only got to stop playing them when the strippers came on!!! !!!

Just to be a little pedantic, the words are actually " No, nay, never".

Lyrics (unless someone know differently):

I've been a wild rover for many's the year,

and I spent all me money on whiskey and beer.

And now I'm returning with gold in great store,

and I never will play the wild rover no more.

(Chorus):

And it's no, nay, never! No, nay, never, no more,

'til we play barsteward Rovers. No never no more!

I went to an alehouse I used to frequent,

and I told the landlady me money was spent.

I asked her for credit, she answered me "nay,

such a custom as yours I could have any day".

(Chorus)

I took from me pocket ten sovereigns bright,

and the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight.

She said "I have whiskeys and wines of the best,

and the words that I told you were only in jest".

(Chorus)

I'll have none of your whiskeys nor fine Spanish Wines,

For your words show you clearly as no friend of mine.

There's others most willing to open a door,

To a man coming home from a far distant shore.

(Chorus)

I'll go home to me parents, confess what I've done,

and I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.

And when they've caressed me as oft times before

then I never will play the wild rover no more.

(Chorus)

He could have stayed at Man U, or Leeds (they're f-in Shi-te!)

But when he saw the oldham he said f'in dynamite!

Isn't it?

Do any two people actually sing the same version of this one?

I suggest that these are the lyrics:

Andy Ritchie's magic, he wears a magic hat

And when he saw the Oldham

He said "I fancy that!"

He could have stayed at ManU or Leeds

But they're both sheite

He signed instead for Latics cos they're f-in dynamite! *

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Andy Ritchie's magic, he wears a magic hat

He plays for Oldham Athletic

He's such a lovely chap

He scores goals with his left foot

He scores goals with his right

But when we play Man City he'll score all f-in night!

* This line is definitely open for discussion.

No nay never is taken from an old Irish folk song called "The Wild Rover" see >>>HERE<<<

Talking of Wild Rovers and Irish songs, Shamrock Rovers had a few wild ones amongst their fans in the Isle of Man in '97. One of the songs they taught us was:

We all live in the Tallaght housing scheme

Where all the walls are green

And Rovers are the team.

We adapted that into:

We all live in the Chaddy Road End

Where all the walls are blue

We're in Division Two.

I think we all know that they are not the words, but this is a family website and so the real words in full would not be appropriate.

Alehouse

Landlady

Money was spent

Custom like yours I can get any day

Brothel

Big Mama

weapon was bent

Suck any day

Toilet

Head tendant

Last penny I'd spent

**** in the corner and just walked away

And then we go with tradition and finish on:

"I'll go home to me parents, confess what I've done,

and I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.

And when they've caressed me as oft times before

then I never will play the wild rover no more."

That's the version I'm familiar with too

The one that makes me chuckle is the local sides namley Stockport and Rochdale who have copied the Pompey Chimes of Portsmouth.

They have obviously misheard "play up Pompey" and changed it to "IO Stockport" (or Rochdale). It always makes me laugh, it sounds like they all owe Stockport money

"when (he) saw the Oldham he said" appears twice! Who would write a song like that?

It would appear that there is a repeated line which appears like poor song writing but I agree with Beardy, his version is what I've always sung.

I guess it is possible, though unlikely of course, that the lyricist could have been some p*ssed up Latics fan in a pub, rather than a professional songwriter.

The mistaken duplication of that part of the song has become accepted as the norm. Just like the dropping of the second verse, which I had the pleasure of teaching some of our younger fans in the pub at Bournemouth.

Heard the We all lve in the Chaddy Road End sung a few times.
