Bingo! Love it - a friend of mine pointed this out to me this morning. Hadn't thought about it like this before but you're dead right. In 1997 the country was unhappy with the incumbent government and we saw a 10%+ swing to Labour. In 2010 the country seems unhappy with the Government and yet the best the Tories can get is a hung parliament result. Surely this tells David Cameron that the majority of the country don't want him or his party in charge!

For me a hung parliament is the best result. Get parties talking and having to cooperate. It seems to be working well in Scotland with the minority SNP.

One big difference- Major was I think technically in a minority government at the time (it was on the Beeb a few minutes ago). Brown (the unelected Prime Minister he is) has a huge majority. The fact the Tories are probably going to be the largest party says a lot about how popular Gordon Brown is- but in fairness when you are going for a fourth term you aren't going to be popular, its the nature of the beast.

The moon faced tory idiots and jabba are trying to spin this election as a rejection of Brown. The real story is the failure of Cameron and the rejection by the British people of his failed agenda.

Granted the real result hasn't come out yet but I will stake my miserable reputation that the wonderful people of these sceptred isles have rejected the tories.

I wonder what odds you will get on the tories stabbing Cameron in the front before Labour stab Brown in the back?

Just as a complete aside, I had come on to this topic direct from the RSS feed after being out at work till about 10:45. Only just now I've clicked view knew posts and have realised that we don't have Mr Penney in charge anymore! Have to say wasn't expecting that.

Anyway, back to the election!

Tory press spin, Prime Minister is a non-position, merely the leader of the leading party not an elected head of state.

It takes a bit longer to write something other than an X and the counters (or whatever the technical term is) might get a bit suspicious.

You can take as long as you like in the booth. They cannot approach.

I've got this nightmare now that the Liberals will do something stupid and not take the new-found power to reform the electoral system that's (notionally) on offer. I'll think they'll make Camoron Prime Minister out of some misplaced respect for share of the vote, rather than reforming the political system to their advantage. In my experience, they really are that stupid.

There is no IHT liability between spouses. So if oafc0000 died and his 100% IHT law was in effect, his Mrs would own his estate including his belongings. Plus, a life assurance policy can be written under a trust to an individual outside of the deceased's estate.

A bit late, but I've been busy; So, you're defending it based on loopholes - wife and insurnace ones, but loopholes non the less - you could tie a whole countyr estate into a life insurance policy if you liked - is that ok?? zero says 100% IHT - so, no swapsies with spouses (not fair on the unmarried surely, or the childless, why can't they pass stuff on wwith no impact?).

100% is 100%. It's a crass and a silly approach. Is zero really saying his kids can get to 18 and whatever happens - drunk in a gutter, homeless on skank, he'd not pay a penny to help them? Or, more likely is it "I won't be in a position to pass oney on (I'll help them while I'm still live and kicking (pre-IHT avoidance)) so tax those better offf than me who can't dispose of enough before they pop" ???

It's really all about where you draw the lines, not whether you draw one or not. Typically it's "20% above where I'd be affetced". Ho.

I see your point but if we had the leaders debates last time- who would the Labour party have put up. It seems the big swing to the Lib Dems was down to Nick Clegg.

In all honesty I don't think it would have mattered- Labour were going to win last time anyway.

Actually Prime Minister is a non-position, I think its First Lord of the Treasury but I'm sure our politics expert will correct me if I'm wrong.

Suits me. Anything to get rid of your idiots.

Dreary me. You've got a choice between getting what you really want and not getting it, and you'll decide not to have it. Thick as pigsh*t.

Anyway, what do you make of the exit poll? Remember Cleggmania? :tongue1:

Sorry Wardle and sorry kids but.

* off Joan Collins!

"Cameron is good for the family, the nuclear family"

That sums it up for me, out dated, out of touch people like the tories.

If anyone on this board not in a nuclear family have voted tory, to coin a phase "how do you feel?"

They do not like you, they are not interested in you, you are not one of "them". They love me, their direct mail has been targeted at me and my wife, two of the biggest socialists you will ever met. Because our records show - middle class, married, detached house they have chased our votes. They have no idea about this world and I hope the majority of people in the country have rejected them.

Stupid enough to follow what most voters want? Hmm, I'm no tory, but that is pure Stalinist stuff - "I'll tell you what't best for you" Oh dear. Tony and Gordon promised voting reform in 1997, did they mean it? Really mean it? Or was it a false promise?

Prime Minister, First Lord of the Treasury - I think there are others. It's all one. Hansard calls him the Prime Minister. No. 10 Downing street's letterbox says First Lord of the Treasury.

Thing is though, I don't think they have anyone who could do better? To be honest I hope they implode. Or explode. Or some form of chaos.

If we voted simply left wing vs right wing, then it would most definitely be night night DC.

Regarding Gordon Brown, I'm not sure what'll happen. I'm not sure I think there is anyone else (yet) who is of prime ministerial ilk. Not just within Labour but also Tory and Lib-Dem etc...

Spot on...never thought of Joan Collins as vile...until I saw her gushing then...disgusting woman.

They tried, but it was low on the agenda. The constitutional agenda was devolution (including peace in Northern Ireland), an end to hereditary peers (only partly achieved, owing to resistance from the Tories). There's only ever so much time. I agree that they should have had a referendum on voting reform, but the Cabinet are massively divided on it. They won't be now.
