It was clear from the kick off the surface was unplayable and referee Tony Bates soon called a halt to the game

Dale televised game on friday v redsox FCUM team- lotsa tv money n big gate - methinks someone decided that game couldnt be at risk so pulled plug (no pun intended!) on our game. Conspiracy !!!!!!!!!!!!:ranting::angry:

You can only blame the referee, the players were warming up on the pitch prior to the game, so surely they would have complained if it was that bad.

They could have called it off before everyone got there, though!

after 10 minsphoto_996899_resize.jpg ...................http://www.oldhamathletic.co.uk/page/NewsU...2205677,00.html Latics' eagerly-awaited first league derby against Rochdale for 36 years was called off after only eight minutes.

It was clear from the kick off the surface was unplayable and referee Tony Bates soon called a halt to the proceedings.

First he consulted both captains and then the rival managers before signalling an end to the game.

It had taken sterling work by the Dale groundstaff to remove water from the sodden Spotland surface so the match could kick off after incessant rain since lunchtime.

They had two sponge rollers in use throughout the warm up while other staff forked problem areas of the surface.

It was clear from the start that the conditions would have a massive part to play in the outcome of the game.

Ritchie Jones had the first attempt at goal inside the opening 15 seconds, a shot which keeper Josh Lillis had difficulty holding low down.

Rochdale had their only chance in the fourth minute following a back pass from Dean Furman which failed to reach keeper Dean Brill.

Anthony Elding nipped in and beat Brill with a shot which trickled narrowly wide.

It was evident at this early stage that the game would not finish and referee Bates quickly came to the conclusion that it could not continue.

total joke....ref should have inspected the pitch at 5pm....then made a decision instead of letting everyone get there and the match begin.....joke

got to agree...a pitch inspection SHOULD of took place....rochdale must take the blame as they should of called the ref in early to confirm goahead/or not

i can't believe how it was played in the first place. it was obvious the pitch wasnt good enough but even when it started the conditions were the same for both teams.

either you play the whole game or you dont, what's the point in playing 8 minutes?! it was just starting to get into a good atmosphere
