What Are You Doing?

What are you doing? What have you done?

We, it seems, are staring down the barrel of losing Oldham Athletic forever. Personally I don't object to moving the club a short distance into a surrounding borough. However this lack of objection was on the basis of a development and advancement of what we have and not a move to a non-league ground with no intention or hope of ever moving back to an all seater and League standard stadium.

So what the hell have you done about it? I've done :censored: all, no denials. Maybe this can be my contribution?

We have a well intentioned but meaningless petition online. We have a collection of positive, negative, delusional and illiterate posts on a meaningless website all ranting and raving about the injustices doled out to the club.

The Trust is ineffective, despite Barry making some very reasoned and well thought-out posts over the last few hours. The council useless and worse. The fans falling away in droves. The ground falling apart at the seams. The team putting in frankly amazing performances given the situation.

So what have you done? Have you thought of running for local office? Have you called lapsed fans and told them we need the more than ever? Thought about a volunteer street team to get out into the town on the day of the game and tell people we need them? Called the BBC, MEN, SKY or other news outlets to make them stand up and take notice of our impending doom?

Sitting on OWTB as I am now and moaning to those who already know the situation is worthless. If this is your club fight for it. Don't sit in your rocking chair in thirty years and wonder why you did nothing when the opportunity was there.

Do. Something.

Same here. I've done :censored: all. Zip.

I'll take some action at the weekend - I might even go through some highly dubious and employment-threatening back channels (popping round to Meacher's office and asking him outright) to arrange a parliamentary petition and to jab my finger in his face.

I thought about lots of things, and done absolutely none of them. You're right. That is totally :censored:. All my schemes might come to nothing, but I'm staring down the barrel of becoming an Arsenal fan, and that can't happen.

I need some help though. Can anyone write a very brief chronology of woe from Sports Park 2000 up to the present day?

Well yesterday I bought my Carlisle tickets and made a modest donation to the club of a bit more than what I saved on the two tickets.

You make a very good point what can we do? All I can think of is forming links between the trust and local businesses to raise funds to at least keep BP open for a few more years, and during that time try to get everyone on board, fans, OMBC, trust, business to seek a long term solution to the stadium issue. I know there are business peole in the town, including me, who although by no means wealthy, would be prepared to do what we could to help. Question is are there enough of us, and is there the will?

Personally groundshare, other than strictly temporarily, or a move out of the Borough is not the answer, indeed it would signal the end in my opinion. The trust may be perceived ineffective, but as on another thread, now is the time we may need it

I've done nothing either (though I have bought a ticket for the MK Dons game....)

I agree, we need to do something. Perhaps we can work out what when we're drunk tonight. No doubt it'll involve world domination and turning China into Oldham fans...

Don't.

I've not done owt either. That's not a boast. The way my life plays out doesn't allow me to support the club financially.

I was one of the main Failsworth opposers, but now even I have to say that a ground-share within a relatively small distance from Oldham seems like the best choice.

I have never felt so removed and helpless from OAFC.

Unfortunatly, there is only one person (or three - not sure what is going on there) who has any say in the future of OAFC.

Without TTA's we would have been dead a long time ago. It seems they only delayed the inevitable. I would prefer a dignified death to an undignified name change. I will never support "God knows where" Athletic.

I even asked the wife's rich 2nd cousin to buy the club for me, he refused :disappointed:

I set up a web shop!

Nobody's clicked on it since last night but it's earning PlayerShare about £1 a day (based on very early run rates).

It could make the difference - honest!

Can you link into Prozac's new online porn venture. Maybe this way we can get Hugh Heffner involved and some cracking models for any new kits...

On a daily basis, I do nothing except mentally toil with the possiblity of how I could cope with losing Latics forever (this changes from one minute to the next but the usual conclusion is that there will be a massive void in my life and football will never be the same.) On a home matchday, I (cough, try to) help the club in a small way by doing the commentary for LaticsPlayer with a certain Mr Butterworth, as Ackey knows.

I'll be at Huddersfield, a rare away outing for me but I will hopefully help in providing an emotional support for the team and the club in very turbulent times. But the other thing most of us can do (and it's appreciated that cost, time and other priorities are obstacles for many of us) is go and watch Latics next season wherever they might be playing. I dont believe that the club will simply fold in the summer and I do believe that Simon Corney, if we don't somehow stay at BP, will attempt to find an alternative, be it for one season, five seasons or however long it takes, and the main way in which we can help is going to that ground and supporting the team as we have done for however many years. Although I accept that it is a possibility in the long run, by looking for a groundshare the club are not considering extinction as an option.

We all back them and want them to win at Huddersfield, or anywhere else they happen to be playing, Thurrock, Chasetown, Old Trafford, Wembley, even the Isle of Man and Ibiza! If they end up playing their "home" games somewhere other than Boundary Park, for me personally, the support and the will for Oldham Athletic to win will never change. I feel that's the main way that we can lend our support.

Obviously my attempt at Leeslover type humour failed miserably.

As for what can I do? Support the team, write letters and emails and as I said last. Unless there's the will to come together and fight this as a collective. There's very little we can do….

Your support and optimism is admirable, but we're down to barely 3,000 fans on occasion. How can the club hope to survive playing in front of crowds that probably total half of that? I refuse to believe that the problems in both patching up and redeveloping BP are insurmountable, the will to do it has to be there granted but moving away is not the ONLY solution. Moving is another in a long line of cost-cutting measures that have held the club back since Stott's days. I and many others will simply not accept it...

I stuck a £2 Carlisle Match poster up in a Post office in Scotland. Went back this morning and some bassad had stuck a notice over it selling a three piece suite

I agree with Zorro 24H, it's not worth threatening the career, important as it is to all of us.

Like the idea of a parliamentary petition though!

I have set up the said (and wrongfully slated) petition.

I have also submitted an epetition on the council's own website! Though the Stalinist bar stewards have to approve it first.

I will be writig to my MP in his capacity as Minister of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government, firstly as he has indicated supprort for our plight, and also for advice the Council actions.

I will link the petition on the Chron and hopefully get a mention.

I think the football clubs spiral down is linked with the towns spiral,

Oldham council have literally done nothing I can think of worthy of justifying their place as our leaders, I have become dissilussioned with them, I cant see any one of them changing the town for the better, they really need to come and talk to the people, have a fresh start, not just send us leaflets basically saying that they are the better of two evils at election time
