24hoursfromtulsehill Posted February 11, 2011 Share Posted February 11, 2011 I think the football clubs spiral down is linked with the towns spiral, Oldham council have literally done nothing I can think of worthy of justifying their place as our leaders, I have become dissilussioned with them, I cant see any one of them changing the town for the better, they really need to come and talk to the people, have a fresh start, not just send us leaflets basically saying that they are the better of two evils at election time I totally agree about the council. I reckon the damage it's inflicted is partly because it's a swing council - Labour one time, Lib Dem / Tory the next. Sad to say that they're all as bad as each other. I mean - did you see what Bashforth said last week. Jesus! After what he gone and done with the BP redevelopment meeting that he basically fixed against the club. Personally I don't object to moving the club a short distance into a surrounding borough. However this lack of objection was on the basis of a development and advancement of what we have and not a move to a non-league ground with no intention or hope of ever moving back to an all seater and League standard stadium. So what the hell have you done about it? I've done :censored: all, no denials. Maybe this can be my contribution? We have a well intentioned but meaningless petition online. We have a collection of positive, negative, delusional and illiterate posts on a meaningless website all ranting and raving about the injustices doled out to the club. The Trust is ineffective, despite Barry making some very reasoned and well thought-out posts over the last few hours. The council useless and worse. The fans falling away in droves. The ground falling apart at the seams. The team putting in frankly amazing performances given the situation. So what have you done? Have you thought of running for local office? Have you called lapsed fans and told them we need the more than ever? Thought about a volunteer street team to get out into the town on the day of the game and tell people we need them? Called the BBC, MEN, SKY or other news outlets to make them stand up and take notice of our impending doom? Sitting on OWTB as I am now and moaning to those who already know the situation is worthless. If this is your club fight for it. Don't sit in your rocking chair in thirty years and wonder why you did nothing when the opportunity was there. Do. Something. If its any conslation i set up an event on Facebook last and now a fanpage to try and encourage supporters to remain positive get behind the team and try bring fans back to Boundary Park.. All my schemes might come to nothing, but I'm staring down the barrel of becoming an Arsenal fan, and that can't happen. I need some help though. Can anyone write a very brief chronology of woe from Sports Park 2000 up to the present day? As luck would have it….Text of my latest (unpublished) Sky Sports Blog:- Oldham Athletic has been looking to rebuild Boundary Park or move into a new stadium since a partnership with Marks and Spencer and other retailers collapsed in the late 1980s. When the club celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 1995 the club were looking at leaving Boundary Park if the council could provide a new stadium at the nearby Clayton playing fields. Sadly the process was opposed at every turn and the plans were scrapped in 2000. The club then came close to going out of business in 2003 before three New York Business saw opportunity in not only the club but the unique location of the club and the 21 acre site the club is based on. The initial plan was to relocate, that didn’t materialize and during the club’s 100th year at Boundary Park – the 2005/06 season and an ambitious scheme was announced for a complete overhaul of the stadium financed by the building of over 600 domestic units. Again the process was drawn out and at first rejected before planning permission was granted for the redevelopment. Then the crash came and the scheme was scrapped. Despite this the 36-year-old Broadway Stand was demolished in a cost-cutting measure. Immediately a quarter of the fan base had to be relocated and many felt alienated. A disappointing second half to the 2008/09 season saw crowds drop to around 4,500. Then came the bombshell that the club had purchased land in the Failsworth area of the town – although part of Oldham, worryingly close to the City of Manchester Stadium and located in a Manchester City and United stronghold. The potential move polarized support coupled with a poor season on the field crowds dropped to below 4,000 during the 09/10 campaign. The Failsworth site did look a viable progressive option BUT the move depended on a disputed piece of land held in trust. After numerous delays the Charity Commission ruled that the land could not be used as part of the plans to build a new stadium, community pitches and leisure facilities that would have benefitted the whole town and regenerated a run down tired area of Failsworth. So what now? Well the club and council are at loggerheads with the fans somewhere in the middle. Simon Corney, the club’s Chairman is threatening to move the club out of Oldham to ground share. Where? We’re not too sure but any move would be a disaster for both the club and its dwindling fan base. The council state they are doing everything in their power to deliver a new stadium but refuse to take the blame for the failure of Failsworth. From a fans’ viewpoint it is clear that mistakes have been made on both sides. The fans are again divided over a ground share BUT the vast majority wants to keep professional football in Oldham. The town lost its Super League Franchise in 1997; it could be about to lose 103 years of League Football unless the Councilors and Club Board find a workable solution of the continual delivery of professional football in the town. The majority do want to do something and are attempting it. Maybe we need a bit of leadership in our support of OAFC. There seems to be oodles of stuff to do/people are attempting it too which is good, but we are all pulling in alternate directions and we need impact. Poster on the office wall - check attend games - check Write/email to MP - check Sign on line petition - check Rant of FB about OMBC - Check, check check I did agree to attend the protest march before the Peterborough game, however I am sensing that its more of an angry rant outside the civic centre. If I was assured this was organised a little better such as - what's the message to OMBC? are we actually marching down to BP too? banners/posters, getting people to sign the petition. If I can get this right and make it family/fan protest then I may reconsider and drag the nephews for a "poor orphaned OAFC fans" piccie. I offer my services (no not in prozac porn way either..,then again if it helps.......only kidding...) then I can give time in the evenings and of course weekends barring home games and Notts county away. However a good clear the old lungs session at Hudds will help me and three points too Just watching Hustle on BBC, maybe they can "Hustle" us a ground seems the topic is scamming footy.. Not necessarily to give to the club under the current ownership, but more of a fund for if the worst comes to the worst and OAFC as we know it ceases to exist. If so, and there was appetite to set up a new club, then money would be needed. If the club does survive, the money could be used to donate to Playershare, or something similarly worthy. I know the Trust would probably be quite keen to run this, but in the current climate I feel many fans wouldn't want to donate to them, as they'd fear it'd just end up in Blitz's pockets at the first opportunity.
