Mellor Why Didn't

Recommended Posts

From watching the match on the Liverpool channel Mellor looked ok,he wasn't fazed facing up to one of the quickest winger in the country and powered forward when he could.

He did make the occasional stray pass, but so did Steven Gerrard.

IMO he's worth another contract as I think he's one of those who could continue to develop, same with Winchester and perhaps Millar.

The alternative is to throw in more the from the youth team next season. I'd sooner see more continuity with the squad we have now.

Let's build a team over the next few years rather than chopping and changing.

Well that's strange as the only change to the defence was LJ making a call that Mellor is a better FB **not left back** than Brown, as the latter was left out of the XI and the the defence shifted over to the right. That is LJ saying he wanted Mellor in our back four instead of either Plummer or Connor.

Or that Brown has just come back from a couple of injuries and has played 90 minutes three times in less a week and will be struggling with some match fitness after being out for a while...

There are much worse players than Mellor in the squad that get much less criticism. At the moment Mellor is a good versatile squad player that can hopefully mature into a decent player. Don't understand the constant negativity towards him on here.

Here here.

A section of our support has an irrational dislike of youth products. Especially if they're local lads.

There is a weird thing with some of our fan base.

Home grown youth products do seem to cop for a higher than average amount of grief.

Usually at other clubs, its the opposite; and a young lad who's "one of our own" is given patience and a fair bit of slack. Other brought it / signed on loan players a little less slack.

With Latics, it does seem the other way round.

Going back through recent examples, a higher than average amount of grief has been given out to the likes of Taylor, Eardley. Winchester, Millar and in particular Dave Mellor are just a continuation of this trend.

Is Mellor a left back? Im not sure; he's now played more games there than he has in CM. is he a decent League One player? IMO; yes he is.

At present, is he best option for that position? Yes he is. Have we had far; far worse players play that positon for us? Yes.

Finally, is the grief he's got this season a tad OTT? Yes it is IMO. He's 20 years of age; he's improving, he played well against a Prem winger and Prem team, and he's worth his spot in the side at the moment.

Tarky too.

Even up until Preston away this season many were still entrenched in their opinion that he was :censored:.

Agree for any young players coming through there is always extra expectations worser so if the kid is a Oldham. Supporters through & through.

Go on Tom - how have you managed to include a facebook quote in the middle of my post?

I've been having trouble using the quote feature but that's a new one!!

There always seems to be one player that some fans take a dislike to and highlight every mistake and don't see what he's worth. For the past couple of seasons it was Furman, which was justified when he jumped ship part way through the season.

However with Mellor I don't understand it. He's a 20 year old local lad whose in his 3 season of his career in the 1st team. he has been in and out and hardly ever returned in the position he last played in.

At the end of the day he's 20. He's got plenty of time to improve, which he will, and settle himself in one position. IMO people are wanting too much from him too soon because of the marked improvement that Tarkowski has made this season. At the end of last season some people wern't going to offer Tarky a new contract and how wrong have they been proved, so hopefully the same will happen over this season and into next with Mellor.

At HT, Mellor easily the MoTM for the 1st half.

Great display at LB. going forward, but especially defending.

Hope he continues 2nd half...

Not as effective 2nd half; but what he had to do; he did well.

Tough one for overall MoTM for me - between Harkins, Wes & Mellor - but for me, Mellor shades it.
