  1. I’m well aware and wary of that - because of a certain goal at Wembley all those years ago I’m cautious about getting hopes up not just with Latics but with just about everything... as the saying goes: it’s the hope that kills you. That taken into account, there’s plenty to be happy about even in just the last five results alone. I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts - as it’s a rare thing. Meanwhile Paddy Power have cut the odds on us top six from 60/1 to 35/1...
  2. Time to start a win countdown thread now then?! If Latics make the top six my bet winnings will fund my trip(s) to the playoffs with plenty to spare for pints plus new Latics kits for my boys... Cripes, exciting times.
  3. Incredible what’s happening at Latics at the moment. Wellens bagging all these wins - I’d never have bet on that. Glad I’ve bet on us to finish top six though... i think an escape from this godforsaken League is coming - and bloody hell, it could be an escape in the right direction. Big week next week.
  4. It's times like this we really need the likes of Matt Chambers to hammer away on the phone and weedle out a line on what's going on...
  5. I'm pretty sure I read it in Keegan's piece on the Mail Online.
  6. It'll be Scholes' to turn down. I'd hope it's him with Wellens. I'd be happy with that. I'm also happy with the line from Keegan that the takeover is ongoing.
  7. I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. Fingers crossed...
  8. Wellens would be the smart and brave option (he'd be a bit of a gamble - isn't every managerial appointment). He has won me over - I hope he gets it.
  9. I look on it like this: we’ve been on a really crap rollercoaster for the past two decades. Suddenly, in the space of a few weeks, we’re riding a rollercoaster that potentially defies FA health and safety regulations. And many of us - myself included - feel a jarring clunk clunk of gears between being conditioned to constant disappointment and unfamiliar potential success. So people may be losing the run of themselves a bit, but that’s all part of the thrill. I’m lucky enough to have seen Latics in the Premier League glory days. Those matches I went to back then with my dad are some of the best days ever. Tbe prospect of another bunch of kids (my sons included) getting a taste of success with Latics would be so great... So while there is always the possibility it’s going to come off the tracks and crash, right now I’m all for the hype.
  10. I’m fully confident - no doubt at all - that we can either go up, down, or stay somewhere in the middle... Joking aside, I’m not a gambling man but I’ll put a tenner on us going up, and a tenner on being table toppers. I meant to put those bets on a couple of weeks ago. I better not wait too much longer!
  11. I’m sure he knows everything there is to know about League One.... (ahem)...
  12. I think what we’re seeing here is player power. I think players aren’t playing so Sheridan will get axed. It’s happening in so many clubs at all levels. In other sports too. Even - or especially - amateur sports. And I think that’s sad and it makes me fall out of love with sport a bit every time it happens. In a dream world, for me, this fecking takeover/investment would happen fast and Sheridan would be picking the team. In reality, I think he has been undermined by the ongoing saga. The players know this. Those that don’t like him give up. The days of playing for the jersey, for the fans, are long over: I know that for sure. But the speed at which a team or individuals on it can stop playing in order to stitch up their manager still stuns me. If/when Sheridan leaves and gets a job at another club I’ll always feel a pang of envy - for want of a better word - when I see a pic of him in that club’s gear. Meanwhile, I hope he gets more time with us. I doubt he will but that’s my hope... And it’s the hope that kills you!
  13. Cheers BP! I don’t post much but always enjoy reading your take on things. In an ideal world I suppose the link between where you are from and who you play for in sport would be stronger. But it’s all business these days. Anyway, also for the record I should probably add that Tony played for that Nancy team we’re hearing a lot about - please don’t let him have discovered an Oldham relative and want to be our next manager/coach/anything!
  14. Just for the record, Tony didn't know when he declared for Ireland that his mother was adopted therefore her Irish dad wasn't a blood relative of Tony's. Hard to blame the guy for taking the call up when it came, It was an opportunity in his profession. And he always gave it his best. Footballers wages werent massive back then. And I'm not surprised Tony has traded on some of the more dubious aspects of his career since retirement. I've met him. I didn't particularly like him. But I understand the situation he was in as a player, and why he has to joke about it now in the after-dinner speaking circuit etc. As an aside, I'm Irish but my grandfather was from Oldham (no adoptions in this case) - hence my undying loyalty to Latics... I hope that means I'm as much a fan as those lucky enough to be able to walk to Boundary Park minus the Ryanair flight!
  15. I'm starting to lose track of who plays for us and how happy or not I feel about them playing for us. Or not.
  16. Halle was a Latics player when he played in the 1994 World Cup for Norway against an Ireland featuring Latics-legend-in-waiting John Sheridan.
  17. On the very very slight chance that anyone on here would be interested... Well, Galway won the All Ireland anyway - the weekend isn't a write off for me and I've something to celebrate in sport for the first time in a long time... I actually got to lift the Liam McCarthy cup itself at work on Tuesday having arrived in wearing my Latics jersey after the cycle in. I hope it's the start of a run of luck that spreads into my beloved Latics.
  18. So Latics lose again, Ireland blow a lead against Georgia having put in one of the worst performances in many years... Galway better win the All Ireland hurling final tomorrow otherwise it'll be the most abysmal sport weekend for me at least.
  19. He's scored some sublime goals in his career so far. Fingers crossed he can do it for us.
