  1. BTW, Gordon won the FA Cup with Charlton and worked in the Treasurer's Department at Oldham Town Hall, when I worked in the Town Clerk's Dept. Before becoming Latics manager, he played in the same Oldham Nalgo team as me against Manchester. Happy days!
  2. Fair enough. He was found guilty of failing to discharge a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act in respect of ensuring there were enough turnstiles to prevent unduly large crowds building up outside the ground. The court heard there were seven turnstiles available for the 10,100 Liverpool fans with standing tickets. Judge Sir Peter Openshaw said: "He should have realised there was an obvious risk that so many spectators could not pass through seven turnstiles in time for kick-off. The defendant's offence was at least one of the direct causes of the crush at the turnstiles outside the ground but it was not a direct cause of the crush on the terraces inside the ground that resulted in the deaths of 96 spectators and injury to many more, to which the crush outside the ground did no more than set the scene." The fans emerging from those seven turnstiles should not have been allowed to enter the terrace through the tunnel into the middle pen - they should have been directed to the side pens, where there was adequate room for them. My question is who was responsible for this failure under Health and Safety legislation?
  3. Graham Mackrell, former Secretary of Sheffield Wednesday and in charge of stadium safety at the time of the disaster, has been fined £6,500, equivalent to £67.70 for each of the 96 victims. He has also been ordered to pay £5,000 towards the prosecution costs.
  4. Joe preferred to have in defence, but when Marshall returned to BP with Ipswich and scored, he ran up the wing to point out to Joe Royle that he was a striker.
  5. Leeds won't have the advantage of the away goal being taken into account this time.

  7. The following has now been added to the original statement: Further clarification to the earlier statement: As part of the agreed purchase of Boundary Park, the group are acquiring the shares in Oldham Event Centre. Thus taking over the 364 day operations within the stand. More details of our proposals will follow, but our stated aim going forward is to generate income for the football club to make it sustainable. The agreement we are awaiting the club sign off on only relates to Matchday operations. This is in line with that of previous seasons. Increases in hospitality purchases in the 19/20 season will therefore directly benefit the club. The belief of the group is that for Oldham Athletic to be successful going forward the asset i.e. the ground and particularly the North Stand should directly benefit the football club. Our plans involve ensuring exactly this happens. In view of the fact that we will be making further statements next week we will be making no further comments until then.
  8. It looks as though the fan-led group needs major investors in order to proceed. 2811SportMedia is run by Broady, Lee Croft, Michael Beardmore and Anthony Dalglish. The latter has "been appointed commercial director of Club Supporter, a new and innovative app that has been designed to help bridge the gap between fans and the day to day fund raising challenges most sport clubs and charities find themselves facing in this tough modern day way of life".

  11. They could have gone up tomorrow if they had won instead of drawing against Latics at home.
  12. It was the same day Inspiral Carpets topped the bill at the Reading Festival. I was there the following day with a backstage pass and told Clint (then a Latics fan) and Graham about the match.

  14. The cases against Donald Denton, former South Yorkshire police chief superintendent, his then deputy, former Chief Inspector Alan Foster, and the then South Yorkshire police force solicitor, Peter Metcalf (all charged with undertaking acts with intent to pervert the course of justice relating to Hillsborough), are due to be heard in September.
  15. It may be a good idea to do what the BP advert says in these troubled times.
  16. This is when I formed the impression that AL had bought everything except the North Stand, which in itself seemed crazy, as that Stand was the potential money-maker.
  17. You may remember this: https://www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk/news-features/8/news-headlines/87918/kevin-pays-penalty-for-goal-photo https://www.oldhamathletic.co.uk/news/2014/october/stewards-who-stand-out-from-the-crowd/
  18. Article in yesterday's Chron: https://www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk/news-features/157/latics/126946/oldham-athletic-could-leave-boundary-park-claims-owner I thought I was the only one who misunderstood what AL bought, but it says that since he purchased the club he has since found out that he only owns the badge, the players and the staff, leaving the stadium in the hands of the former owner.
  19. Can't make because spending the weekend in Newport/Cardiff, without Latics being able to spoil it.
  20. Mrs S. and I get your drift and it makes perfect sense!
