I remember a certain Paul Gerrard making his debut and he had a fine career... Remember similar comments about him being made...

Paul Gerrard was PANTS. How you could rate a goalie who can't kick in the modern game is beyond me.

I will never forgive him for his performance at Spurs away that time......

I've made no secret of my worries over Bell...and I haven't seen him play in an actual game so can't make a decision based on that. I've just been worried about how last season, Shez chose to bring in an untested keeper for hie league debut rather than play Bell...and this season has judged that since Norm got injured, the gap in quality between Bell and Lomax/Windass between the sticks isn't sufficient to warrant losing an option on the bench, which speaks volumes. I have repeatedly questioned why, in those circumstances, he is still at the club.

That said, it would be wholly ridiculous to even entertain the idea that Windy should go in goal tomorrow out of choice. If it did happen I'd expect Shez's and Bell's contracts to be ripped up and in the bin on Monday morning!

The one where we were 3 down in about as many minutes? It was bad but Gerrard has played the best part of his career at a higher level than Latics have been playing at.

His kicking was the only thing about him which wasn't very good. In fact I know he's availible (or he was at the start of the season) as he drinks in my local now and then (back in Heywood) and he could do a job IMHO (in fact when Crossley got injured I'd have looked for someone like him- half-retired but happy to pick up a wage and be there just in case). That performance at Spurs wasn't great but some of the defending in front of him was poor that day. In fact the worse goalie error that day came from the Spurs goalie (Horsvelt?) who was very lucky he didn't drop a Neil Adams cross into his own net in the first minute. Gerrard and Crossley are both of the same vintage and back in the day (when they were both in their prime) I'd have had Gerrard in goal 9 times out of 10. I remember his debut too and he did OK then and in the next few games for him to keep Hallworth (or the 2nd choice) out for a while.

As to the choice of who we have go in net if Shez chooses and outfield player instead of a proper goalie then not only should he be fired but he should have to pay back all of Josh Bell's wages from this year. We gave the kid a contract let him try and earn his money. As to the no goalie on the bench routine I think its slightly different, I know Colin does it because he liked the option of having an extra outfield player (and Jagielka was no mug) and OK we got found out this time but I think if our subs bench was as decimated as it had been last year Bell would have been on it. I think its 50/50 as to the number of times you need more than one outfield player (in a certain position) due to injury/tiredness (as opposed to tactics) comapred with the amount of time you need another goalie.

Andy Rhodes was even worse at kicking a ball but he was one of the best keeper's I've ever seen.

I rated Gerrard actually. Top notch keeper and has proven it in a long career at the top level.

Hmmm, yeah he hasn't played a lot of games since he left us has he? Surprised at that.

Yeah, had a bit of a shocker against Spuzz that day, but still thought he was a quality keeper. Mind you, he was behind Neville Southall at Everton, and he'd take some shifting. In more ways than one.

Paul Gerrard's kicking was worse than Pogs'! His shot stopping sometimes left a lot to be desired, weak hands and wrists often meant he palmed shots into the net - something highlighted even more at Everton were he never really established himself as the true No.1 there throughout his lengthy spell. What Gerrard did bring to the table was superb command of his area and his abilities in taking crosses and excelling in one on one situations.

By the way, we have until noon tomorrow to register a loan signing. (Gareth Owen anyone Twice!)

That my friend is plain ludicrus.

Agreed!

That is an outrageous statement. Yes he kept a clean sheet, but come on, he was all over the place whenever the ball was in the air in the box, the shot where they hit the post off that freekick - windass actually dived for it whilst facing the wrong way, and the one he saved was just an utter garbage shot by Fryatt....starting him in goal would be the most bizarre decision during shez's reign, and should we get spanked off them, Shez & Oldham will become an absolute laughing stock by putting a CF in goal!

It has to bell (should we not get a loanee in time)!

Simple As That!!

I haven't seen Bell play either but the only thing Shez has against him playing tomorrow is that he he is inexperienced / young. I believe that as he is in our squad, show some confidence in him (including on here!!) and give the lad the shirt. When is he ever going to get a chance otherwise? I would rather have one of our squad in there than a last minute recruit from who knows where coming from someone's reserves or out of retirement (Goram come back springs to mind).

The idea of Windass in net when we have a young keeper on the books is crazy, even Deam said that when he admitted it is a specialist position.

Have faith as well as keep it!!

The rarely wrong Chron says that in the event of Shez being unable to sign a keeper by 12 noon on Saturday, he will turn to first-year professional Josh Bell who would be making his debut.

Sheridan has praised Bell’s ability, his only reservation being his lack of experience which is why he would prefer a more experienced shot-stopper.
