Realistic Signings

Recommended Posts

Anyone else on this board get the sinking feeling that Latics fans are once again getting ahead of themselves and anticipating a budget that is just nowhere near realistic? When I start seeing people suggesting that we might have the brass to sign Nardiello and Guy I start to get this inexplicable headache, coupled with a rising panic that I am shortly going to be reading posts from people disappointed about our procurement policy...

We definitely need a striker, and Guy seems to have come in and done okay so I'd say we could do worse. Without spending or great good fortune we aren't going to find a 20+ goal a season man, so a hard-running striker with a bit of pace and a good attitude who can bag 1 in 3 would by no means be a disaster. Supporting cast being Alessandra, Eaves, Brooke and potentially Smalley, I cannot see that we have any money to spend in that area.

Also we need a defender, and I for one think we could do much worse than :censored: - but could we do better? We need to know if Gregan has the legs and the heart for another potentially tough year, plus Hazell is a guy who I like but would like better if he was first reserve...

As for keepers, I think the consensus is that we are unlikely to see Fleming but I also doubt we are going to see Flahaven in and I struggle to see Brill going out - who would take him if his wages are as reported in some quarters? I'd prefer to see Brill go and us appoint a proper number one, and I cannot see how we can afford to have him as number two...

Finally; Parker, Aljofree, Steer to go, and most of the loanees to return from whence they came.

Anyone disagree with the sentiments? Any thoughts about players that people want to see?

Understand we're your coming from regarding the budget. From what i saw of Nards & Guy i'd happily have them both in the squad but as you say wages have to be realistic. Alessandra, Eaves & Brooke decent back up, although they don't seem to be an impact sub, like someone who will come off the bench and score, if they started together i think they'd do alot better, but its a bit of a risk to take.

Gregan and Hazell have been fine to me, look at our defensive record, says it all, the team would not seem as fresh, but Hazell doesn't need to be a first reserve.

:censored:? Could do better? In a defensive way, yes he's useless, but in Midfield he's one of the best in this league. Love him for another season.

Keeper wise, Flav has been good, but Brill has just been as good, wouldn't mind them both, but as you say budget won't probably allow that, happy enough with Brill as number one next season personally.

Its all about finding value for money in the transfer market Its just been on football league weekend about Scunthorpe they have made a fantastic success of this. As they have discovered Martin Patterson, Billy Sharp, Andy Keogh, who have between them gone for just under £4million Millwall I believe found Morrison in nonleague Jim Gannon was excellent at it when he was at Stockport county and why people would happily see him here as manager here.

Their will be players out their this summer who will be that diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered its upto us to go and find them they can be young and old the likes of Fitz hall, Wayne Andrews, and to an extent Chris Porter and even Dale Stephens were plucked from obscurity but also the likes of John Sheridan and David Eyres who proved fantastic value for money signing who would have been dismissed by other clubs as being over the hill proved fantastic signings for us.

If you go back further Irwin, Warhurst, Barret, Ritchie hadly cost a penney between them. Its never going to be easy having a small budget but it doesn't mean you can't succeed the period between 89-94 was built on finding value for money signings and while football has changed significantly since then and the bosman ruling has allowed players more power in where they play their football you can still get success from maximising your resources. The key will be to go out and find that rough diamond rather than let an agent talk us into signing the next Kiegan Parker or Michael Ricketts.

heard alot on here and from other places that brill is highest earner. now i like brill and at no point turned againt him always thought we should have sticked with him. being dropped first time did him wonders and thouht being dropped second time was a tad harsh. however if we can get flav on lesser terms than brill would prob make sense to let brill leave to free up some money to strengthen other areas of te team such as the front line. would love to see nardielo and guy in our squad next season but at the min dont see much chance of it being financially viable

the only problem I have with nardiello is is injury record. Can we afford another player who is injured so much? I'd stay clear - BUT hed be good if fit.

Realistic targets:

Jevons?

Craddock from Luton (especially if they stay down)

Matt Tubbs from Salisbury has scored 25 in an average conference team. At 26 years old may be worth a punt.

otherwise - lets see who are released too.

I recommended him to Latics three years ago. Only other one I've done so was Danny Green who is ripping up trees for Dagenham and would be eminently gettable. Best crosser and dead ball player I've ever seen outside the top division.

I think he's caught the eye of quite a few clubs bigger than us.

It'd be a superb capture but I think bigger clubs with more money will be after him.

Big centre back Mvoto who scored against Latics today might be available.

Just shows what happens when you take a chance on somone like that really Jim Gannon is a regular watcher of local non league football thats where he plucked a number of his youngsters from.

Millwall didn't take much of a chance - they paid around £120K for Morison, but that is about £115k more than Stevenage paid for him three years back.

I'd like to see Lionel Ainsworth - currently on loan at Brentford, Mvoto - Gregan not got much longer left, Cleveland Taylor - currently on loan at Burton.

No chance of getting that bloke on loan at Hartlepool, he will go to someone with more money than us.

I'd pay close attention to whoever the bloke who watches a lot of Irish football recommends - you seem a pretty adept judge mate.

does anyone think that guy from northwich victoria would useful? cant rememeber his name but was very tall, useful in the air, good defender and was a long- throw specialist. And in terms of scoring goals Danny Crow has scored a lot for cambridge united this season and looks a decent striker.

I'd expect we'll move for Guy in the close season. With Flahavan out of contract I'd think DP will try and bring him in too, though if Palace get relegated/don't get sold and Speroni leaves then they may be inclined to offer him another deal.

If Guy can come in and play the twelve or so goals a season man then he needs a 20 goal man alongside him. Easier said than done. But from what we've seen this year, Abbott's not that man. I don't want to see him go but losing him to free up space on the wage side for a goalscorer wouldn't be the end of the world.

From what I believe the Notts County owners have said, they can see the current wages out until the end of the season but cuts will have to be made over the summer. Lee Hughes anyone?

Hughes, pav and guy will almost guarantee us more goals then we have scored this season.

Depends on if he will want to come back, and if other teams are not interested.

No chance of Hughes coming back IMO. On far too much money at Notts.

Lewis Guy I would like, and is realistic.

Like others I'm not sure about Nardiello. I saw less than him than others appear to have done, and his injury record isn't worth the risk.

With the keeper, I wonder over the availability of Dimi Konstantaflopadopolis. Always seemed good to me, and isn't getting a game.

Chris Shuker is out of contract at the end of the season. Always thought he was a good player in this division, when fit of course.

Wasn't at all impressed with him when we played Tranmere this season. It was funny watching him try to pick a fight with Gregan, though. It was like watching a Jack Russell trying to hump a Alsatian's leg.

I just don't see it with Flahavan - he is a good shot stopper but does not command the box on crosses and is no better than Brill in my opinion. In fact - I prefer Brill

FWIW I agree with you, but even when Brill's played well DP tends to favour Flav when available, and thus I think he'll move for him. I'd rather the money was spent elsewhere.

I have recommended a number of Irish League players to Oldham, one being Rory Patterson he has scored 40 goals this season for Coleraine and got called up to the Norn Ireland team.

Rory was on trial with Plymouth a few weeks ago, but hasn't heard anything back.

Id like to agree, however I can imagine this being a Parker esque signing , a player who constantly terrorised us in the past will be inexplicity :censored: for us !

What about Stephen Dawson at Bury? Just been named in the league 2 team of the year and is out of contract this summer. Another midfielder i know but if we release players in that area and with the loan players going back he could be a good replacement. And we have had a couple of decent players off them in the past, Porter, Stephens. Ive never seen him play personally but i know a Bury season ticket holder who says he is probley their best player. Has anyone seen him play? Sounds like a workhorse but not a great goalscoring record.
