It's probably just a symptom of age and general curmodgeonliness but is tehre any point or value to having a page "liked"?

Smacks of despearte insecurity to me and the need to demonstarte to the world that one has a large number of "friends".

To be fair Facebook can be used as a massive marketing tool. People make huge sums of money using purely facebook for marketing.

Yes, The club have dropped the ball with facebook a few times now. I always thought they should ask to use the fan run facebook page. They always keep people up to date and have got more followers.

With a fan running it though it could lead to some very reactionary status's if we lose ,

Could you imagine

Once someone Likes your page any update you then put on your page is automatically fed into their newsfeed which they will see when they login. If it was a teaser headline then it could drive traffic to the official site which would raise revenue for the club.

Plus as it is pretty painless for anyone with a passing interest in OAFC to press that like button they are increasing the number of eyeballs that see any marketing initiatives or stories of interest among people who might not visit the official site.

Thanks. I genuinely consider myself enlightened. I suppose it's the touchy feely turn of phrase that I struggle with

Social media is a bad format to advetise on (as many of the companies advertising on them are finding out). People go on such things to socialise and take little notice of the adverts. The amount of money raised through them is very minimal. Kitkat were the first to find this out when their sales stayed level despite a multi million dollar advertising campaign on MSN messenger service.

I couldn't tell you what any of the adverts on this site are about exept one which was for a dating site.

A quick look at the popularity of the unofficial feeds on Facebook shows you there is a lot the club could be doing on there. Football fans are obsessive about their clubs and places like Facebook are ideal for the club to interact with these obsessives!

Yes I work in social media but in all honesty things like football clubs with communities already in place can make great use of these platforms.

On a basic level what happens on Facebook is similar to what happens on here. People post opinions, news, facts, links and discuss etc.

I know Manchester City are now a massive club but in terms of social media they are doing a fantastic job at engaging with their fans. Things like this can really make a difference. I was involved in building up a community around a business and small little interactions could generate over £10,000 of revenue from a single individual. To get to this point though we needed an active community in place. I am not saying that the same will happen with Oldham but good on them for getting involved!

It's about time Latics got a proper facebook page. I've just seen Brentford's page and they use their profile picture to advertise the next home game and show special offers. We go on about advertising on bilboards around the town but this is just as good - if not better because it's free and targets the interest from people who care! Brentford have 10,000 'fans' on their page - of course not all of them are going every week but it keeps them upto date and their interest alive.

The only thing that has annoyed me so far is the marketing departmentlady putting every single story from the official site onto facebook, thus clogging up the news feed. I like the idea of giving free tickets away randomly to fans, I know Salford rugby have done this previously each week and it makes the club look good.

There are some on here who won't use facebook and think this wont change a thing, but if done properly it could prove effective.

Putting every article from the official site onto Facebook will just turn people off - not what Facebook interaction is about.

The Facebook side of things should be more light-hearted and engaging. It should show another side to the club....what goes on in the background, what players/staff get up to in their spare time, what the club/players think of topical things of the week etc etc mixed in with the odd merchandise or tickets advert and some occasional serious article.

Photos and the odd video are good, too.

Morning!

It is good to get all of your feedback, and I can see what you mean by putting every article from the official site could put people off - I think a bit of careful selection to what links go up there needs to be looked at - as I am sure you are more than aware the club earns money from the number of hits it has to the official site, obviously the more hits the official site gets the more money the club gets, this is the reason for the 'teaser' on Facebook with a link to the full story on the official site.

Bear with us on this though - we are trying to get the best for the club in the best way possible. The idea of attracting fans to the official Facebook page with the competition definitely seems to of worked though, nearly 200 extra likes since Thursday afternoon!

I stand by my teenage girls and nonces comment re-Facebook.

But re-advertising. I said to someone that Blue Square do a great thing with in-match betting (and apparently they do), due to the advertising on here. Yes, that worked.

And for God's sake its a Marathon that wins hands down you bleedin' morons.
