Recommended Posts

This episode comes in two parts, part one sees Andy, Adam Keeley from PTB, Alf Bridge this week's fan guest and Huw Davies a journalist working for FourFourTwo magazine discuss all things Latics.

Part two is an interview we conducted with Andy Roberts, Chairman of Northampton Town Supporters Trust, earlier in the season where we learn of their plight and the origins of the modern day supporters trust.

Enjoyed that, Alf was really good value and hearing the Northampton story in its entirety was very interesting ; we have spoken to them earlier this year so I knew bits of it, but the Brian Lomax story was all new to me.

It was interesting to hear Eamonn O'Keefe mentioned ; he was at Blackpool for a little while in the mid-80s and scored a lot of the goals that took us to promotion from D4 in 1984-85. To fans of a certain age, he has God like status with us.

There was one point I wanted to make , which was about how regularly you have protests, and whether they can lose their impact. I suppose a lot depends upon how you define "protest" ; it's not always about marches, and coffins and so on. Our Trust had a presence - and a banner - outside the main entrance to Bloomfield Road at every home game for four seasons. It was a silent reproach to the owners, a rallying point for sympathisers and a base from which to lobby visiting fans.  It turned out to be very significant in court as a demonstration of our continuing commitment to regime change. To be fair to PTB, they can't generate brand new ideas every fortnight, and nobody should expect them to.

Good listen that and enjoyed @BP1960 contribution not always seen eye to eye but the knowledge and passion shines through more than it ever can in the written word,

did have to grab myself when you mentioned Jimmy Sirrell as I misheard it for another Jimmy of the BBC and thought “I wouldn’t be shouting about working with him” 🤣🤣

Thanks @basilrobbie, did you know when at Mossley Eamonn O'Keefe was a van driver for the Manchester Evening News and would have delivered the football pink after playing in a home match? That's why I think many who move from non league to professional football really work hard to succeed.

Another interesting fact about Eamonn is he played for many years as a full back before switching to a striker role, hence why he wasn't spotted until he was 26yo. Probably the quickest player I've seen apart from David Shaw and I knew even at top level with his other skills he would cause problems.

Ps I remember sending a 16yo lad  called Matthews (can't remember his first name) to Derby County in the early 1990s and I know he later joined Blackpool, but don't think he stayed long.

I wasn't totally convinced about him, but thought he was worth recommending as a schoolboy.

It's a good back story Alf and I didn't know it. I agree with you about his pace, he was like lightning then.

I have no pretensions to being a scout but I do recall recommending Steve Morison to the club. He was sold for £10k to Stevenage before eventually playing in the PL for Norwich either side of cementing status as a Millwall legend.

A very good player and just the type we could do with now.

It's quite remarkable he spent 5 years in non league scoring almost 100 goals yet he wasnt given a FL chance earlier.

Perhaps he had a good job so it took a good offer to persuade him to turn professional.

There are lots of players like him about and fans who watch them regularly like you did are often the best judges rather than a scout like me who may only see them once, or aren't even aware of them at all.

He was a bit of a prat who'd fallen out of love with the game.  He was lucky to find a manager, Martin Hayes, who pushed him.

I was very good friends with Eamon, a great lad who would probably have made it earlier but for breaking his leg when he was at United as a kid. Ironically i was at the game at Goodison with him when he then broke his leg again playing for Everton against United after a challenge with Kevin Moran. Did very well at Blackpool and then Port Vale where he played up front with a young Mark Bright

What this podcast reinforces is the breadth of media coverage that we are getting to put our protest firmly into the public consciousness.

Podcasts

National Newspapers

Television Channels

Social Media Platforms

Specialist Football Publications

with an article in 442 Magazine due to be out tomorrow.

The off field (and on the pitch) protests have brought great publicity for the cause and, by and large, have been done in a passionate, professional but dignified way. How great was it to see the plane trailing the banner above BP?

And the ‘Coffin March’ gained widespread praise.

The fan sound bites demonstrate that we are not asking for the world just a return to a well run community club that we can all be rightfully proud of.

The big question is how to maintain the momentum over the coming months (seasons?).

A permanent banner outside the ground?

A sustained protest in the ground at a specific time every home game.

Selected games with a ‘ramped up’ protest?

The examples from clubs such as Blackpool and Coventry show that it’s going to be a long road.

Kudos to all who continue to push for change 👏

Yes, I've seen a lot of talented players not go higher, there was a player called Jody Banim at Droylsden who had silky skills with ball control rarely seen outside the premiership and scored goals for fun, but for some reason apart from a brief spell at a couple of FL clubs spent most of his career at Northern Premier League level.

I’ve just read the 442 article. Five pages with the headline: “Send in the Clowns”

A good piece - Nothing new but accurately captures what is happening  at Boundary Park.

One quote:

”Abdallah asked, ‘What’s the problem with Urko Vera?
All the fans yelled, ‘He’s Shit!’”

😃
