In With The Away Fans

Recommended Posts

I read a topic on another website this morning about going in the home section at away games. It reminded me of a match verses Cardiff in the 76/77 season I think. A mate and I got talking to some Cardiff fans in the Spinners before the game. We got on really well and they suggested we go in the RRE with them for the game. Being young and foolish (and after several beer we agreed). Walking to the ground with them we got attacked by some Latics fans but that didn’t put us off. Latics won 2-0 and my mate and I both went mad when Latics scored. We got some funny looks from the Welshmen but survived intact. We must have been mad. Has anyone else done anything similarly foolish?

I paid a steward to let me in a fire escape at Griffin Park when I turned up so late they had closed the turnstiles. It was my first time there and of course I was in the wrong end. Pretty hard keeping a straight face when you are watching the team win on sudden death penalties...

me and my mates turned up late to the victoria ground stoke a good few years back and asked a steward outside for the away end (WE ALL HAD LATICS SHIRTS ON) he says just in here lads.

so in we go to be met by a couple of thousand stoke fans and a steward who looked like he was going to have a heart attack when he saw us.

his words " are you :censored: stupid you will get :censored: killed if you stay here you set of :censored:" :dead: (seemed a nice fella) :security:

had to get escorted along the side of the pitch while getting abuse hurled at us from the home support.

the stewrd that sent us us in must had had a right laugh

When Blackburn's Jack Walker died, they drew Rochdale in the Carling Cup in what was the second game after his passing (when the competition was 2 legs, early noughties). Blackburn got given the WMG which is where at the time I went sitting when I went Dale.

Me and another mate decided that due to what had happened and the fact we liked the stand better than anyother, that we'd go in with the Blackburn fans.

One of the most moving tributes i've ever seen and probably ever will. The entire away end stood up singing "Uncle Jacks Barmy Army" for 90 minutes and all through half time. Sat right at the front and joined in what will be one of the best atmosphere's i've ever been in. Blackburn where winning 1-0 going into injury time, then Tony Ellis popped up with an equaliser. Neither of us celebrated till we got in the car park. To be honest, doubt anyone would have minded if we had. They hadnt stopped singing even despite the goal and the few behind me were saying how 'dale deserved it. Blackburn won the 2nd left 6-1. David Dunn scoring a hattrick of penalties with Blackburn fans despite the win sat in silence for 90 minutes.

When we battered Wolves 4-1 at home a few years back,we ended up in the RRE,with the away contingent.

Three of us vowing not to move a muscle if we scored.

Andy Ritchie scored after about 2 minutes we all went mad,but fortunatly so did about 500 others in the 'away end'

Went to Newcastle in the early eighties I must have been around 12 -13, with two of my cousins of similar age who had relatives living in Chester Le Street.

Stayed over for the weekend and made our way to the ground on the Metro. Latics had been given part of one end behind the goal (current Sir John Hall Stand) split like Boundary Park Rochdale road end.

Unfortunately not realising away fans had to pay one fixed price we were short of money and so had to go through the home turnstiles as juniors in the hope we would be allowed in with the Latics fans once inside. This was the time of the full fencing at grounds with terracing and there was no chance of us getting in the correct section. Had to spend the whole game with our scarves tucked inside our coats while we were pinned against the fence nearest the Latics fans absolutely petrified, I even had a velvet Latics bowler hat (anyone remember those) which I had to crumple up and shove in my pocket, it was never the same again.

To top it all Latics lost.

THE REPLAY in '90 at Maine Rd, Nicky Henry 'scored' cue a few 'tics going mad in the corner but quite a lot more scummers jostling for position. Naturally the goal was never given but shortly after Mclair scored and the plod steamed in and left what felt like a handful of 'tics bemused. Me and my father-in-law looked at each other and just said 'thank **** for that'.

I've been in the home end a few times when the Latics have been away. First time was against Blackburn in the year we got promoted- 91. Think it was the only place my Dad could get tickets, I didn't wear my shirt as I was scared I get beaten up (despite being only 7) and we lost (plus a couple of other losses when I've not worn a shirt mean I try to wear one to every game). For the 3-3 at Maine Road in 94 (I think) I was in their main stand and it was obvious that a few people around us were Latics fans who couldn't get tickets for the proper away end (one even had a Latics sunhat on). City were my second favourite team back then so I didn't mind and managed to fake pleasure when City scored (and quelle my pleasure when Latics scored). For a Notts Forest game (the 5-3 one) there was a family sat behind me in the main stand who were Forest fans and they were wearing Engalnd kits (good way to blend in if you ever go in the wrong end) so I followed their lead. For the 94 Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge (1-0 win) although I was in the Oldham section considering there were only 7 of us sat down there wasn't any segregation and I managed to walk into the Chelsea bit for my half-time 'comfort break' without any problems (Although some Chelsea child decided to say we were :censored: despite winning 1-0). I know none of these are as exciting as back in the day when there was more trouble at football but who is going to beat up someone who is obvious still in primary school.

Once went in the Gelderd End at Leeds with my late dad and his mate - I was about 15 - best 0 - 0 ever! I breathed out after 90 mins.

A few years later, just before Christmas, I went to West Ham with a mate who got us complimentary tickets. We were in the corner of the main stand and recognized about 6 other Latics fans. Whilst we were whispering what should we do if we score, we did! In 1st minute! We all went mad - cover blown. Latics won 2-1 and one particularly vile Hammer was shouting all sorts of filth as we left at the end of the game. One of the lads there - the really huge fella who still goes today (sorry don't know his name) - shouts over "Merry Christmas" and everybody (including Hammers) cracks up laughing.

I sat in the Huddersfield end away last season, spent most of the game sat on my hands trying to behave!

Sometime in the 2nd half Eardley I think got sythed down in our own box. I jumped up going crazy at the ref for the foul, then suddenly realised where I was and quickly changed stance and called Eardley a "diving ****!"

I think that might have saved me from a right shoeing from the yorkies!

Hull away in late 70's or early 80's - not a place for feint hearted - we got rumbled when we wouldnt join in with 'sir Geoffry Boycott' chant and quickly removed by old bill to save our lives !

Trampmere away around same time for night match - went in old cowshed which was home end then but a load of scraggy scally chavs started lobbing bricks at Latics and most ran off - me and my brother were surrounded and tried to speak in scouse accents but in the end still got a good kicking - never forgiven the tramps after that !

OT also standin in Stretford end and my mate cheered when Latics scored - prob was we were the only 2 with northern accents as everyone around us were from dawn saff ! - typical redsox 'fans '!!

Oxford away was funny when our minibus was late due to too many pit-stops and we piled in late and walked round the pitch and went in the home end - it was split with a fence down the middle and we we so pied that we went straight in the middle of the oxford mob and started giving it large and singin all things Latics before being requested to leave by the police but totally ignored by the home fans - dont think they knew what to make of us !

Ipswich away for promotion day was prob best - was livin in Ipswich at the time and went in home end - couldnt keep it in and went ballistic when Marshall tucked away his goals - fair play to 'tractor boys' - very generous in defeat and wished us all the best !

oh happy days !!!

The same game that you were waving at the away section, obviously giving away that you knew us, its a shame we didnt start a chant for you!

:shy:When Newcastle stopped away fans due to their redevelopment, we got 4 tickets through contacts at Scottish & Newcastle Breweries.

Before the game in the Brown Bull(?) we won both the namecards that were being taken round, which kind of drew unwanted attention to ourselves, then in the ground we all leapt to our feet when Jobson scored.

A warning of "Sit Doon You Bastards" from some huge dockers was well heeded, and we considered ourselves lucky to have lost the game on the way out when the same group formed an intimidating line whilst we sheepishly passed by.

We were 4 big lads who were made to feel very small that afternoon. :shy:

Scunthorpe away a while back was the last time for me.

Whilst queuing up we noticed the turnstile next door for home fans was cheaper so we ducked under the railings and about 8 of us went in. We approached a Steward to say we we from Oldham and had made a mistake and could he take us through to the away end only for him to refuse saying he couldn't do it; he even asked us for ID to prove we were from Oldham. So after we all got pie'd up (surely another indication we were away fans!) and sat down and belted out a rendition of "We love you Oldham" the senior Steward came along and unbeleivably asked us where we were from, it should have been perfectly obvious by now especially as we stood at the front of the stand for a while chatting to friends in the away end. He still also asked us if we had any ID though!!!

Anyway eventually he took the "Executive Decision" to move us, and they walked us through into the Away End with a whole £2 saved, which was as good as a free pint then! :D
