A left footed Left back who can go forward but is good defensively aswell, maybe Jones but if not someone similar. A new creative CM with same kind of play as Wellens. A big tall target man who can chip in with a few goals as well. A pacey CF who will bang the goals in for us. These plus Allessandra as back up will see us up there. Dare I say it, 2 decent strikers at the top of that team would have won us the game yesterday. A lot will depend on budget but, if we can bring in a decent standard of player for next season, the only ones of the current crop that should get near the first team are Gregan, Taylor, Allott and Eardley (although, if a decent offer came in I'd let him go in a shot). The players we have are either not good enough or could be sold to raise cash for Joe to wheel & deal with possibly a couple of exceptions (Allott and Hazell spring to mind). There'll be big changes this summer, it's impossible to say who is coming in and frankly I don't really care who is playing for us as long as they care and do a job. Starting from that base, I think we need a centre-forward and a centre-half, and I think we could do a lot worse than looking at Graham from Carlisle and Trotman on loan until January. With a big, strong CF we'd need to play with width, and look to Taylor and Smalley to get balls into the box. Whether that team is going to be good enough is a matter for debate, but you have to be realistic. We have been hugely spoilt by having guys of the quality of Wellens and Kilkenny, and if our budget is short then we aren't going to get them again - unless we look to use the loan market. Given the budget we have to use what we have to maximum effect, and I'd say that the two signings above would give us that. Plus you have versatile guys like Taylor, O'Grady, Lee and Smalley who can be used to cover other postions. We need to be smarter with loans this season too. Maybe look to get a left-back in until January, depending on how good the training staff see Black as being... If we have slim resources then we cannot afford not to give our youngsters a chance, and that is what I want to see next season. As the Meerkat says, "simples". Stop being so negative; the awful performances of a team low on confidence and morale are not always the best indication of the talent within a side. Are we going to have a decent budget? Are we going to have Joe in charge? These are the answers we don't have. So in the scenario that they don't throw money at the team, we may as well cut costs to one that the club can pay for. In that case, like LDV says, this team will do a job of keeping in the division. No more, but hell, paying players through the nose hasn't done that either. Personally I'd off Stam and stick with Gregan... With Hughes, Liddell and Possibly gregan and Crossley not on the pitch next year, we are likely to have a very young team, with the likes of Allott and Hazell as our experienced pro's.
