Best Latics Back Four

Recommended Posts

We've had some very good defenders over the last 50 years but;

Halle Jobson Barrett Irwin

or

Barrett Futcher Jobson Irwin

In the times we've been in the bottom two divisions:

Wood Lawson Hill Whittle (Four hard men!)

Here's one to think about, which players would you put in your all time favourite back four (not just on pure ability but cos you liked them).

RB: Denis Irwin

Centre back: John Hurst

Centre back: Kenny Clements

LB: John Ryan

From when I started supporting Latics (mid 90's onwards):

RB Eardley

CB Hall

CB Gregan

LB Armstrong

Halle, Jobson, Barrett, Whittle - now that's a back four

in recent time. Armstrong, hall, hill would take some beating, who was right back when we played 442??

Had that exact discussion with somebody the other day and reached no conclusion. I remember Josh Low and Eyresey playing as wing backs. But 4-4-2, not sure. Clegg possibly? Or he may have arrived after the cull.

Didn't we usually play 3-5-2? Beharall/Hudson would probably have filled in.

It feels too that people often seem to forget when they rave about the Hill-Hall-Armstrong defence that Clint only played 18 league games for us.

Just dug out a programme from the 02/03 season, the Grimsby game in particular.

From looking at the table of who played which game, it seems the back four would have been:

Beharall Hill Hall Armstrong

To add my personal favourite, which is the point of this thread ( ) I would pick:

Eardley Gregan Haining Taylor B)

Ah of course. And Hudson came in on loan covering for Hill, with Haining emerging from the youth. I think that's right.

I always thought Paul Warhurst was classy when he played at the back, never understood why he didn't go on to great things.

Warhurst was on the verge of the England squad scoring goals non stop for Wednesday & Blackburn when he had a very bad leg injury.

Moved like a rolls royce , quickest player we have had by a country mile.

Fitz Hall was 22yo when he joined the Latics, he went on to have a good career and is still playing in the top flight ?
