MacDonald and Rooney

Recommended Posts

Im not a rooney basher but 2day there was something drastically wrong with him, he was woeful, even the the warm up/shooting practice his technique wasnt there. I really hope he gets thru this bad patch. Sitting in line with their back 4,i thought the game was crying out for jch,he would have frightenen them with pace, all we needed was a decent thru ball and he was away !

I was really impressed with the way Macdonald and Philliskirk worked together. Some terrific football particularly in the first half.

I've been saying for weeks we should start with these two, their class showed today. We lost all hope up front when DP went off, JCH is not ready yet imo.

We have to find a better way of playing Rooney. Swindon were set to pay him 8 grand a week so he must have a bit more in his locker.

He's no target man and struggles to win the headers....hoofing it up to him all the time is such a waste and as in the Vale game at home if we can get in behind the defenders out wide he will bang em in!

We must be paying him a big wage and I am mystified as to why we employ him in that role whenever he plays.

Rooney's been signed on a decent wedge of our playing budget and LJ must have done his homework to out his eggs in that basket and to convince SC to do so too.

He's proven quality at our level and unless he's the latest victim to the strikers graveyard that is OAFC or were obviously not playing to his strengths.

Play the ball on the floor for him the run on to or in from the wings and he'll score. Too many lofted hoof balls and you'll nullify his threat.

Unsure if LJ recruited him as a target man but he ain't. Had we the budget then yeah a Matt Smith alongside a Rooney or MacDonald would be brilliant. We ain't so back to the drawing board with what we have.

That said, he a low on confidence and if we had the time - like we should have had with Matt Smith under Dickov - and the pedigree will come shining through with games under his belt.

I dont think it's just a case of us playing him in the wrong role TBH. When I saw him pre season, I thought he looked like he could be a very good player at our level. I was more than happy when we actually signed him. However since then he looks very lazy to me and I am sorry that upset's some of our fans who thinks the sun shines out of his arse........but that's how I see it.

I want anyone who pulls on the blue shirt, to run themselves into the ground as Danny P and Mcdonald did yesterday..........I'm sorry but I am just not seeing that from Rooney at the moment!

I have only been to one game this season but I was at a party yesterday for my mates little girl and there were 5 tics in the room. They are seasoned fans who have been home and away for the last 25 or so years. The point I am making is that they al said that Rooney isnt the player they expected and something is clearly wrong as he has good previous pedigree. Danny Philliskirk seems to be getting the plaudits, is he in the same mold of Lewis and Vernon with a good first touch?

Danny P has a decent touch Lukers, but I think the main thing is that the penny has possibly dropped with him that he needs to work very hard for a career in professional football. I dont know much about the earlier part of his career apart from the fact that he must have shown stacks of potential for Chelsea to come in and spend so much on a kid. I think it probably helps that his dad was a hard working pro and he has probably sat him down to advise him that this is probably his last chance to ensure that he isn't a forgotten also ran. He never stops working!

While some probably think I am Rooney bashing, I can assure them that I am not and I do see a talent (probably far better than the likes of Danny P). I just want him to work much harder than he currently is, whatever role he is sent out to play in.

I'm not sure what people expected - the fact is he's playing for us because more has gone wrong with his career than has gone right, I'm sad to say.

Prolific in Scotland granted, but just seems to have chipped in with token totals for the other clubs he's played for. Think someone on here said they were thinking he would get 20+ goals for us this year - ridiculous expectation, particularly as there's no real evidence of him being a regular scorer previously (unless you count Scotland..). Every player we sign is a bit of a punt - hopefully in time we'll see that the gamble on Rooney's been worth it. Wouldn't hold your breath, though..

Thanks for the update, a centre forward should be running his nuts off for the team. Simple things like holding the ball up gives the defence a breather and enables the team to get into shape and good positions. From what I hear and what you say he isnt doing this?

That's exactly where i'm at. Couldn't agree more.

One moment that really worried me on Saturday was late on, when Rooney finally got the ball into his feet.

He had chance to turn and then run at the defence.

It opened up for him and he could have driven further on and taken a shot at goal.

He chose to pass to a CB, Kusunga, who had stayed upfield.

Unbelievable.

A snapshot in 1 moment on the pitch of where he is currently at. He chose to pass to a defender, rather than to take it on himself.

Worrying.

The stick he is getting from the fans is a contributing factor to his confidence being so low, now before everyone jumps on me I'm not saying that the sole reason his confidence is low at the moment. I'm saying the stick he is getting from the fans etc will have knocked him a bit, when he gets minutes he needs us behind him.

Rooney has done nothing wrong in the time he has had on the pitch - sure he could have been better at times, but so could the whole squad at varying points to date.

When he has played he has done fine by my book, taking into account the lack of proper service to him. He played great against P Vale and looked sharp, only to be droped 2 weeks later.

He needs backing from the fans and also the manager - chopping and changing your forward line and having Rooney partnered with another striker every game he has played in will have done him no god at all in being able to read movement and link ups with players around him.

He is NOT a target man and judging by the way he has played when the ball has been launched to him, it's not what he expected to be doing either when joining us.

He does need to be more physical and impose himself on defenders, but the abuse and vitriol he is getting on here and at the games even when he is nowhere near the ball or has no chance of winning a header against a 6ft 4 defender is pathetic and embarrassing.

He is our TOP SCORER FFS!!!

Play him as the main man, with either Mcdonald or Philliskirk alomgside. If we want to change it the other way then it is JCH who comes on for Rooney as the bit of bulk alongside the smaller nippier striker.

Rooney and CM or DP

Play them for the next 6 games come what may. He needs backing but also the chance to develop an understanding with a strike partner and the midfeiders.

You will soon see a marked difference in performance from all concerned.

It;s all about partnerships and confidence which Rooney needs at the moment.

The guy is a goalscorer - i hope we are not going to force him out through the moronic band of 'fans' abusing him game on game, i really hope not......

Other than a few muttered comments that in no way would you be able to hear on the pitch, I heard no abuse of him from my side of the MSP?

Where is this abuse of Rooney coming from during games exactly? i haven't heard anything that a player focusing on playing the game would be able to hear or register?

Couldn't agree more with SheffLatic.

Once you get to a point where the striker is actually backing into the defenders so to avoid having to go for the header because the size difference between himself and the defender is so large there's a problem.

Ball came to his feet and he did some nice flicks and passes - ball punted towards his head and he couldn't compete; instead trying to get fouls. I can't understand how some people can't see this.

He is not a target man. He holds the ball up. There is a BIG difference.

I would love to see Rooney with MacDonald in a prolonged run of games but Philliskirk deserves his place for the time-being. Just don't write Rooney off yet. When LJ learns how he should be played he will be a success.
