iamjonesyyoafc Posted March 9, 2014 Share Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) Firmly in the Johnson IN camp at the moment, I thought I'd take a look at a comparison between the initial seasons of Paul Dickov and Lee Johnson... In Paul Dickov's first season in charge, after 35 games we had won 11, drawn 13 and lost 11. This saw us sitting on 43 points after picking up 17 points in 18 games between New Year and Mid-March. Under Dickov, we had scored 46 goals (including a period of over 9 goal-less hours) and conceded 52 (including 11 in 2 games). We were knocked out in the first round of the FA Cup, League Cup and Football League Trophy under Dickov to Accrington Stanley, Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury respectively. We gained 11 points from losing positions as well as dropping 30 points after taking the lead. We scored 9 goals in the last 10 minutes of games (gaining 6 points from the goals) and conceded 14 (7 of which cost us points). In Lee Johnson's first season, after 35 games we have won 10, drawn 8 and lost 17. This saw us sitting on 38 points after picking up 14 points in 13 games between New Year and Mid-March. Under Johnson, we've scored 40 goals and conceded 51. We were knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round, the League Cup in the 1st round and Football League Trophy in the Area Semi-Final to Liverpool, Derby County an Chesterfield respectively. We've gained 12 points from losing positions as well as dropping 16 points after taking the lead. We've scored 5 goals in the last 10 minutes of games (gaining 6 points from the goals) and conceded 9 goals (4 of which have lost us games). Below is a comparison of when, in games, goals were scored and conceded between the two seasons. This shows that we seemed to begin and finish games equally well in terms of scoring, but switched off in the second half. This shows that in terms of scoring, we end both halves well. But we tend to concede towards the end of games again. What do you make of this? Do you think it means anything and has the data been useful? As I think the issue lied with clipboard and when he left our fitness issues (as well as the connected weight issues for some of our players) improved, as IIRC we improved under TP too. Exactly and maybe if Butler had stuck by his proper job of being fitness coach, as opposed to a coach (note he is not fitness coach at Donny), then perhaps our fitness levels wouldn't have waned so dramatically, after the initial improvements. In the games after Paul Butler's departure on 31st December 2012, we drew one and lost 4 (excluding beating Forest and Liverpool). Annoyingly, we conceded 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of games but only Coventry's last minute goal cost us as the other 2 just extended already existing leads (against Brentford and Walsall). Intriguingly, under Philliskirk, we didn't concede any point dropping goals in the last 10 minutes of games - the only one coming in Sheffield United's 2-0 win. Then, under Lee Johnson for the remainder of the season, we again didn't concede any goals in the last 10 that cost us points - the only one coming in Preston's 2-0 win. It appears to me more apparent over time that there's little substance to all of Johnson's talk and he's as crap a manager as his predecessor. I wouldn't say there's little substance to his talk, more he's finding it a lot harder to implement than he anticipated. The comparison between the two managers right now - whilst interesting - isn't as revealing as it could be in a year or two. I, and I think a number of others, were hopeful that after his first season Dickov would build on the positives he had brought to the table and improve. Sadly he didn't, merely stagnating and in some cases regressing. This is where the acid test comes for Johnson: does he improve and learn from the mistakes and experiences of his first 12 months in management over the course of his tenure at Boundary Park? I agree with this in the idea that he's either going to learn or do what Dickov did and just try much of the same. Just hope its the former rather than the latter.
