On one hand we should refuse anything but ridiculous money.

On the other do we accept the usual undisclosed fee in case he spends a large chunk of every season injured? And use that money for a more attacking midfielder? Would two Mike Jones types work?

Corney would snap Johnson's hand off for £200k and Johnson knows it.

Would be great to get a substantial fee but I think our best chance of getting a decent payment will be if a number of clubs come in for him.

We clearly try to sign players on wages below what they could earn elsewhere and I'd imagine we negotiate based on not standing in players path should we receive offers that the player believes would enhance their career.

I think we will all agree that Liam didn't pull up any trees in his first half a dozen games, but as the season wore on and his own fitness, strength and match sharpness returned and not withstanding the teams overall development to play the way that LJ wanted them too, I think he shone out like a light and showed how crucial he was to the team's tactics and ethos. None more so than when he was injured and the team capitulated whilst flirting with the play-offs.

To me it boils down to:-

1. How much money Barnsley are willing to pay for him.

2. If DK can bring someone in Liam's position who fits his style of play better and is maybe a cheaper option.

3. If DK feels that he needs the money to strengthen other parts of the squad.

Personally a Latics line up that doesn't have Liam Kelly in it is a weakened one, but how many of us said that when Korey Smith left.

Liam Kelly was our most important player last season. More than Jones, Winchester, Forte etc.

We absolutely crumbled without him.

If he leaves I'd want silly money - nearer a million than £250k. We've got him for another 2 years and he's relatively young. We actually have the advantage this time so we should be able to ask for more than he's actually worth.

Now we see if this new stand really will make a difference to Corney's ambition for the club.

What did we pay for him? 100k or thereabouts? His value can't have increased very much in a year.

He might be important to us but players in his position are ten a penny really although I agree that any offers will be an indication of any remaining ambition from the owners.

He was our most influential player last season, club captain and the only player who showed his worth when he wasn't there. To get rid of a player like that is madness. But the reality is we are a selling club until we get more revenue from off field activities and pay on the dayers. If a sensible offer came in that enabled us to improve the balance sheet and cover his replacement we should sell. The trick is having the replacement lined up, someone young and cheap that we can also get on a 2-3 year deal that will also either improve us as a team or financially.

I'd be right ****ed off he was accepted anything less than £500k. He's a key part of the team and whilst no player is irreplaceable, we'd need to replace and need to be compensated accordingly to enable us to bring in a replacement for him but fund other areas too

The article goes on to say that midfielders aren't a priority for Johnson, defenders & attackers are.

No way he's gonna spunk some of our valuations of Kelly on a position he's not in desperate need of.

We all know the minute Corney gets a sniff of anything near £250k he'll empty Liam's locker quicker than we can say undisclosed.

After being out injured for a very long time he's come back and shown he's still a good player and that he isn't a total crock, albeit still injury prone.

Surely his value has increased?

Oh look another thread full of fans who are happy for the club to let our best players go for peanuts, totally baffles me the mindset of some fans.

IF we are to have any chance of success these sort of players need to be retained, how much would a suitable replacement cost or are we setting the manager up for a fall ?

Of course, not to the tune of 500k plus though.

Eh? Where has anyone said we're happy to let him go for peanuts?

His genuine worth only matters if we're looking to sell. His value is at our discretion, and that is considerably more than whatever we paid for him, with the new stand our bargaining power should be higher, + contract length + age + :censored: Off Johnson factor, I'd say that's over £500k.

In reality he was always worth more than what we paid for him because he was a part in the Smith deal, which meant Kelly's value to Bristol went down ie. they were looking to replace him anyway, he'd been out for a full season and he wasn't in the manager's plans. Therefore if we paid a 6 figure sum for him his pure worth must've rocketed while at Latics.

"One opposition manager recently suggested Kelly would be worth a million if he was younger than 24."

Value £300k

LJ Supplement £200k

Total: £500k

Deal or no deal?

The same Korey smith that just got promoted and made team of the season? We need to keep him. What's the bloody point of selling ur best player every year to another team in this crap division. We'll never ever improve if we do, just keep treading water.
