creepy
If it encourages the old bill to protect property, perhaps the Act has some sense. The policy of "do nothing now and nick 'em on CCTV evidence later" allows more damage to be done and has encouraged copycat events this week. what a load of :censored:! it kicks off in Tottenham so what do you expect the police to do cover every single part of London or even England just in case? the law is flawed if they think the police can protect every single property from a riot!!! Our delivery from Chadderton Tesco booked for tonight has been cancelled as well - wonder if they're shutting too? Or maybe they just couldn't be arsed delivering to us . boboafc
Man arrested on suspicion of arson after Miss Selfridges in Manchester set alight last night A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after Miss Selfridges in Manchester was set alight. The shop on Market Street was set alight during violence and disorder in the city on Tuesday 10 August 2011. An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson in Manchester at 2pm on Wednesday 10 August 2011. He remains in police custody for questioning. Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: "This is a prime example of how quickly we are working. Only 18 hours after the incident, we have turned around the CCTV and identified someone we want to speak to in connection with this offence. "We will work just as quickly through all the hundreds of hours of material at our disposal to ensure the right people end up in front of the courts and face justice for their actions." The old bill is encouraged to charge violent disorder rather than riot to decrease its erm...compensation bill. My car insurance won't pay out if it gets torched in a riot - in such an event, I'm meant to claim from the Old Bill. rudemedic
As an aside... The first person who appeared in the dock this morning was a 31-year-old teacher called Alexis Bailey. She pleaded guilty to being part of the looting of the Richer Sounds store in Croydon. Alexis Bailey is a male classroom assistant. If its been reported somewhere that he was a female teacher; there could be a libel claim or two. Apparently over 800 people have been charged from London alone. Do we have enough prison spaces for them all?

Incidentally Alexis is his middle name, his first is Andrew.

leeslover
It's a little known fact that three or more people called William gathering in the same place can be arrested on suspicion of being chutney ferrets, although it hasnt been enforced since 1889. help_shiny
think Manchester centre will be quiet tonight, it's raining and they'll all be in their little hovels. It's Birmingham that's a worry tonight. Real potential for it getting very nasty (well, I suppose 3 people being killed means it already is very nasty). rudemedic
251 charged in London.. 1000+ arrested... Right you are, its still a lot potentially going to prison in a week. If the rate of "rioting" continues the prisons are going to run out of room and the people involved may realise this which won't help. Two people have already been sentenced to about 4 months for their part in Salford/Manchester, which some are arguing isn't enough. However ambitions for strict sentences may be very wide of the mark, considering the sheer numbers involved.

Stevie_J
What a prick back in the city centre the day after in same outfit.... delighted they caught him. The barrister I am with on holiday says Stevie is wrong and its why the police under pressure not to use Riot as the charge a simple law that adds to costs. Do NOT have to prove anything beyond 12 involved in violence as officers have a duty of care. Sounds barmy but law used to have to literally read the right act. Well I'll bow to the better knowledge of a barrister. Having looked into it, that is indeed the case. A 2009 case suggests the police forces are insured for the damages that would be paid out but perhaps that case would have prompted the insurers to review their terms. I suspect the 1886 Act might be reviewed, once the dust settles.
