I have always been a Corney fan. It is beyond conjecture where we would be if he hadn't stuck with us. Two days ago, in this thread, I said it would be incredulous if Corney had not spent the last month gaining support from sponsors, directors and management. He already had a little insight into how some fans felt and the negative nature of any mention of Evans returning to professional football in the national press. Alas, he does seem to have pursued his interest in Evans without due diligence and fully understanding the strong anti-Evans agenda that has been waged by the media - a serious error in my view. Maybe it's because he doesn't spend a lot of time in this country.

I don't care about Evans but I do care about the club and I now feel demoralised. How badly effected the management and players are remains to be seen but what a circus they are having to manage to and from training.

As it stands Evans is proven guilty of rape, has served his time and wants a job. While he is entitled to profess his innocence the sordid facts of how he became entangled in his predicament do not make him a role model or likable person to the majority of decent people. In short, he made his way to a hotel, somehow obtained a key for a room that was not his, entered that room in the hope of having sex with a woman he had never met, without payment and in the company of a mate.

Even now Evans is seeking something of benefit to him without the slightest concern to the welfare of those that provide the benefit.

Now, Mr Corney and Mr Evans can you please sort it out PRONTO before our club is engulfed in negativity at every game.

Corney, withdraw any offer immediately.

Evans, concentrate on clearing your name instead of lurching around the lower leagues causing mayhem and distress.

If we don't already have a contract with him, what I think would be the best way out of it with saving a modicum of the club's dignity, would be offer him a week's trial and training. Then we can say he's not fit and we don't want him. It saves us (a little) bit of face, I think.

Either way, it's a horrendous football decision if we sign him without seeing him train or be in a reserve game, he literally hasn't played for years.

Latest update on the mirror website....

Oldham's shirt sponsors say they will continue to support the football club if they sign Evans.

Carter Moore Solicitors confirmed they will back the Latics regardless of the clubs decision over the player.

Probably it's simply because they specialise in criminal defence and employment law!!!

Hardly good for business if they show their hand in the opposite direction

Joint statement being prepared.

Hopefully that means that one way or another we will have a decision today - we then deal with the consequences from that.

Do people think that the fact it is a joint statement with the PFA leads you to think the outcome is a signing?

The clubs academy coach, Simon Cooper has just tweeted that the club gave him a 2nd chance after drug addiction and a life of crime.

Basically backs the decision to sign him.

Was he remorseful and realised he made wrong choices or did he deny it all and pleaded he was innocent ?

Kind of make a difference....

I kind of thought that myself.....but there is a chance that given the publicity that the PFA want to be there to say something along the lines of:

"We understand that Oldham Athletic have considered the decision fully, but given the weight of reaction against the signing have chosen to not proceed. We will of course work with our member to understand the impact and options for the future, but would like to thank Oldham for their efforts and considerations in obviously tryting circumstances"

This, from the Mirror live update

More from the Press Association here:

Oldham and the Professional Footballers' Association are preparing a joint statement over the future of convicted rapist Ched Evans.

The League One club confirmed on Monday that they are considering taking the controversial step of offering Evans a route back into professional football.

Further discussions involving the players' union were held today and a mutually-agreed statement is being drawn up, according to PFA sources.
