Striker a priority

Recommended Posts

If we don't sign a striker who can finish we will be in the bottom half, we have defended well away from home and that's allowed us to pick up valuable points using forte pace on the counter attack, now teams sit back we are screwed

Good point made there. This is why you need to be playing the likes of Daniel Johnson, Philly and Winchester at home. They can pass intricately to split defences apart and all you need is a striker with a brain to tap them in. Big lumps like Ibehre really have little purpose at home unless you're playing a team who can't defend anyway.

The midfielders are good enough to fashion chances themselves without a big guy's help. You're right. We're going to struggle to regain that place without a guy up top.

Looking ato Rotherham's last few matches, Matt Derbyshire has benchwarmed without even getting onto the pitch, he wasn't even in the squad for the weekend game against Blackpool. I wonder if he'll be a target. Experienced player who knows where the goal is and has proved it at a higher level only last season would be brilliant for us. Wages may be an issue though.

Q. How many Strikers do we already have? A. enough

Whose banging them in for the reserves? ..... ah! that may be the real problem.

Age old answer to strikers who have lost confidence or that goal scoring instinct is to play in the reserves till the goals flow.

We've had great ( or at least good enough) strikers recently, Smith - Rooney for example, They just needed to find consistency in the reserves or such.

Whoever turned the Poleon deal from a loan to a perm move needs looking at. If that was LJ then you can't blame SC if he doesn't give him more funds to get another in. If SC did the deal and made it a perm one then he really should be looking at ways and means of supporting LJ.

We spent cash on him and his wages will be decent no doubt. Hopefully if they can get him really fit in this break he could contribute something infront of goal. I can't see us having the cash for anyone proven to provide goals.

Yep.

If it was LJ who pushed for the actual transfer rather than the loan, it looks to be; at this stage, one of, if not the, poorest decisions he's made transfer wise.

IIRC at the time of the signing, LJ was quoted as saying he was a work in progress, who if they managed to "polish" would bring in the club a big return on the investment they'd made. He used Jonson Clarke-Harris as an example of what could be done IIRC.

It looks pipe dream stuff ATM though unfortunately. Unless something drastic happens, i can only see £100K fee + wages having been thrown down the :censored:ter on Poleon.

To be a success; he needs to add most; if not all of these to his very limited game skills he has at present:

Touch

Awareness

Composure

Finishing

Passing

Jumping / Spring / Heading

Decision Making

Attitude

Maturity

It might come. Add most, if not all of those to what he already has - basically pace and low centre of gravity - and he's half a chance.

But - essentially; its a complete project. We'd have had to do exactly the same if we'd have signed a sprinter like Dwain Chambers: basically teach a fast man how to play football.

Its a project. A long project. And one i'll be amazed if works...

Alternatively, sign a striker who's banging them in for another clubs reserves.

But we don't have enough strikers.

Turner - constantly injured. Still a kid who probably needs a loan somewhere.

Bove - a kid who's learning his trade on loan. Never scored a league goal.

Ibehre - 1in11 man who isn't good enough and will probably be sent back in Jan

Poleon - not scored a league goal in what must be 15 matches and has looked garbage in most

Then you've got Philliskirk who is bordering on not even being a striker. And Forte who's clearly a winger and not a front man.

I wouldn't call that line up an abundance of strikers. 1 league goal all season between them. And it's great sending strikers to the reserves to find form, but from that list it's not a matter of form, it's one of ability, and for Bove and Turner one of maturity and experience.

I've read 100 times on here Royle's quote, you can't have too many strikers. We don't even have one capable striker to challenge for the play offs in League 1.

I'm intrigued as to what Bove's doing wrong,

Probably just seen as not ready yet.

There's always an obsession amongst supporters of sticking young strikers with no experience up front and expecting goals. I was like that with Dab Taylor a couple of years ago. Have to trust the manager's judgement.

This lad could fit the bill on loan;

RYAN SEAGER
Southampton
D.O.B: 05/02/1996
Position: Striker
A striker who scores goals for fun, Seager has a useful habit of poaching efforts inside the box – something he showed as a schoolboy at Saints with a goal for the Under-18s against Arsenal.
Ryan shone in his first full season at Under-18 level in fine form, notching 20 goals for the U18s side and making a number of substitute appearances for the Under-21s.
The young forward agreed a long-term professional deal with the club in April 2013 along with Dominic Gape, and has since become a regular fixture in Martin Hunter's U21s team.

what about giving Poleon/Morgan-Smith a runout for a couple of games both players need to get time on the pitch play Forte left and Winny right with Jones and Kelly in the middle there has to be goals especially at home in that front six, play the same back 4 week in week out and get the run gping again, its easy this management lark. :)

Ebanks-Blake finally found a club, joined Preston on a free until the end of the season - presumably with some chunky wages!

Grayson: “We have seen enough in training to see that his fitness levels have improved all the time. He has the ability of being a top striker and a clinical finisher.”

I've seen a bit of this lad over the last few years and he could be a great striker. Very surprised he hasn't been given a first team chance at Saints when many of his age group have. He's a real menace and a goal threat. Could be the next Harry Kane.
