Stevie_J
Wasn't Stephens out of contract at the end of the season we sold him? Or have I misremembered? Yes, I think so but we'd have got a fee at the end of that contract because of his age (unless he'd done a Porter).
oafcprozac
Those players hardly made it to the promised land. The Trotman fee was astonishing. With regards to Stephens, we sold him for £375k plus 10% of any future fee. Now, 20% obviously went to Bury. And according to that report a fee of £1.5m has been rejected. So if Villa do continue their interest we're looking at a figure of at least £150k. That's £525k, which is brilliant business. He was good, but not that good. Obviously, when a club does come looking at our players we WANT to sell as long as the price is going to benefit us. Yet Premier League clubs are after him? Stephens if used properly will do very well at that Lower Premier League, Higher Championship Level imho Edited August 29, 2012 by oafcprozac
leeslover
Yes, I think so but we'd have got a fee at the end of that contract because of his age (unless he'd done a Porter). He was too young to do a Porter at that time.
UpTheLatics
Yet Premier League clubs are after him? Stephens if used properly will do very well at that Lower Premier League, Higher Premiership Level imho Yes now. He's progressed at a better club and he's confident. But as those names Leelover has pointed out - had we dug in further and his porgression stuttered we'd be looking like fools right now. Surely what may work out at over £500k is decent business. As a lower-table League One club we're not in the business of holding out for £1m offers.
opinions4u
Stephens had two years left on his contract. He signed a three year deal at the start of the season he left in. He played one game short of a trigger payment to Bury.
deyres42
I think given his age and potential for further improvment he was worth a fair bit more than what we flogged him for.

I recall waves of fury about us not signing then the deal was revealed, in that, knock them down then build them up marketing style that we used for a while? archiecat
I thought Stephens wanted a move away from BP ! Did he not go to Southampton on a trial with a view to a permanent move before the Charlton interest ? Anyway, whatever money we receive for him, should he move to another club, would be better than zilch Get in trousered Simon so we don't have to argue about where it is spent

oafc1955
I think it was Eaves who signed a 5year deal before Bolton came in for him.

Lags
Granted in better times (bigger gates) we or Corney has turned down 750K (reported) for the likes of Porter and Taylor. That's 1.5 million that could have come in. It's also reported that Crewe have yet another player clubs are preparing a 2 million plus bid for. They get these type of fee's regularly over the seasons, why don't Latics?. Even when we've got a massive asset like Richards lurking it just never seems to come off for us. WE only had him for five minutes when he was a kid didn't we? Dunno if he came to us because Leeds didn't want him or did they move house or something? oafcprozac
To me that suggests they are testing Charlton's resolve, do they need the money or not type of situation. I hope the other interest comes to fruition as an extra £100k could be bloody handy...
