Outside Looking In

I’ve paid close attention to oldham since you’ve dropped out the league, reading this forum from time to time and listening to the BPAS podcast every week. It’s a bit of a win win for me because i see a lot of similarities between oldham and wrexham so I’d love to see them do well, rebuild and eventually get back to where they belong, however there is also something very entertaining about seeing the meltdown amongst your fans when you lose/draw to (insert tinpot NL team here) made all the more satisfying after reading the cockiness and delusion of SOME fans as to how easy this league would be before the season started, so seeing as there seems to be a growing level of unrest about performance levels and a fair few shouts of Unsworth out thought id give my two cents.

Firstly when he was appointed i thought David Unsworth was a great appointment and exactly what you need (two of the best managers we’ve had whilst down here were of a similar mould, and both quickly moved on to clubs higher up the pyramid) and despite a worrying start and what sounds like a reluctance to change tactics i still think he along with his backroom staff will prove good for the club long term, which looking at the 3 year contracts is what the Rothwells/Royals are going for, and I definitely think sticking with him over sacking him and getting an experienced NL manager in, in search of a short term upturn in results is the right move because some stability after years of decline is what you need (I appreciate this is far easier to say when I’m not subjected to the dross it sounds like he serves up week in week out).

With regards to the players it’s pretty simple, you have a few who are decent for this level, albeit may blow hot and cold but finding a player at this level who doesn’t is either a miracle or will set you back a fair whack, a few who are capable and then a lot who are either past it, crocked or just not good enough, that being said there is definitely enough to at the very least avoid the drop. I think if you want to push towards play offs a few new heads are needed but i also think more can definitely be got out of the current squad, be that by Unsworth getting more out of them or them actually applying themselves which it doesn’t seem like they are currently doing. In my opinion you are severely lacking creativity especially out wide so until you can bring in better wing backs or wingers, depending on which system you use going forward (don’t get me started on 532), your best bet would be a diamond in midfield with Tollit as a 10 Rooney and maybe give vaughn a chance as the two carriers and Gardiner if fit sitting deeper, any two of hope, fondop and abraham up top, hogan when fit providing some much needed experience and leadership alongside someone more raw, carragher maybe? Then the usual fullbacks and keeper.

Once again very easy for me to say but now is a time for patience and sticking behind the team and manager, it looks like you are going to have to grit your teeth and undoubtedly sit through more loses to teams you have never heard of before, and I’d be lying if i said that gets any easier seeing 17 away fans from borehamwood celebrating 3 points but hopefully it will become less of a regular occurrence. See you 12:30 sunday for a thrashing at the racecourse.

It should be about 6-0 to you - we are that bad.

P.S. How is the "scouse champagne socialist" Mullins getting along on his quarter of a million pounds a year salary for playing non-league football? Bought any new boots yet?

Should being the key word there, something tells me it won’t be, especially as it’s a cup game

Nah - you'll crucify us honestly - we are at a low ebb morale wise. Most of the players will now have given up playing for Unsworth after his latest public berating of them, almost "en masse".

We would have had a "sell out" fans wise but I know many, me included, that are now giving it a miss. Can't blow another ton or so on a 3rd consecutive miserable away day in a very short space of time.

Can't wait to see the betting odds for this one!

Yeah not sure publicly reminding shit players with low confidence just how shit they are is the way forward, might see a reaction on Sunday though who knows.

As for the crowd I’m guessing you’ll still sell out as our away section is only 1200 or so, 12:30 on a Sunday wont do travelling numbers any favours mind

If the players have anything about them especially the ones DU had a go at in the dressing room,  they'll come out to prove him wrong.  Then really enjoy telling him so in the dressing room afterwards. I know I certainly would.

To be fair we haven’t sold the 851 yet, unless i’ve missed it. Still 300 or so left when I asked last Thursday at the ticket office.

Hardly surprising, some will be put off by the chance of it kicking off, and it's on the box, and we are shite. Wrexham is a bit of a shit hole as well.

Can’t disagree with any of that. I was hoping it’d sell out quick and there’d be some demand for tickets as I’ve got 2 and can’t go now. Luckily was only £12 each.

Our best display of a rather non-descript playing season to date was our first 60 minutes against Wrexham at BP until we tired and sadly run out of steam.

I am not for one minute suggesting that we have built on that, patently obviously we haven't, but in my opinion, it's a free hit on Sunday, away from the horrors of the league and maybe, just maybe there will be a happy ending for Latics on this one......stranger things have happened.  My heart says 2-1 Latics, my head does not agree yet lol

can only agree with any percieved sentiment of that being low.

however that was ST sales and l think l read that today is open sale day, so they should be gone by lunchtime..

Fair play to the OP for offering his opinion, but I haven't heard ANY (i.e: not even some..) of our fans claim this league will be easy...

We're in a mess.  Our fans thinking we'll walk the league is a perception created by fans other clubs..

Frank also made everything 20% harder by with his 'who the fuck are dorking' speech*

*l cant actually imagine a legend like Mr Rothwell swearing in public. possibly ever.
