Macca
Who was Oldham's left back in the 1981-82 season? Got a shirt from that season with number 3 on the back.
Bristolatic
John Ryan, I think. Could be wrong.
dannyboy55555
Def Ryan. Very good player
lancy lad
I reckon it was Ryan, although wasn't Ronnie Blair or Maurice Whittle the earlier left backs? I was only 11 in 1981.
Dave_Og
Ryan http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1981-OLDHAM-ATHLETIC-V-BLACKBURN-ROVERS-TEAM-SHEET/271293813867?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D18223%26meid%3D1963289527675317670%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D8339%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D300962032448%
LaticsPete
Ryan played 41 league games at left back that season, Steve Edwards the other 5.
oafc1955
I think he moved on to Newcastle shortly after for a decent fee.....I think he scored a shed load of goals for a full back and was a very good player for us.
bigfatjoe1
John Ryan. Very good left-back. Came through the ranks at roughly the same time as Paul Heaton. Went to Newcastle. Struggled with injuries. Returned briefly, i think. all down hill after that.
Lee Sinnott
Think it was John Ryan...
laticsfanatic
Yep, John Ryan. For a brief period he looked the real deal. An overlapping left back with genuine power and pace. Formed a terrific partnership with Paul Heaton and won an England Under 21 cap before moving to Newcastle for around £250,000.
stargazer
Ryan left with the world at his feet , he was a pale shadow of that player when he returned.
Stainrod
I'm pretty certain that the superb partnership was with Paul Atkinson who went on to sign for Watford Edited October 14, 2013 by Stainrod
disjointed
I was sure it was Atkinson, they were fantastic on the left for us, Paul Heaton didnt he go on to form the Housemartins, or perhaps I have had too many Happy hours.
LaticsPete
It was Atkinson on the left , Heaton operated more on the right, and Jim Steel and Rodger Wylde as main strikers.

Monty Burns
When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was about the mindset of some of our fans.
bigfatjoe1
Yes, Atkinson on the left. He went to Watford and did nothing. Actually, that was a really good team with the three youngsters providing a real boost to what had been a flagging outfit. We pushed up to the top half for a while...it didn't last as we sold Ryan and Atkinson.
oafcprozac
I was sure it was Atkinson, they were fantastic on the left for us, Paul Heaton didnt he go on to form the Housemartins, or perhaps I have had too many Happy hours. No refused to Build on his good times here at Watford and ended up living on a campsite in North Wales in his little Caravan of Love…... drphibes
Great partnership between Ryan and Atkinson who both got sold on to Newcastle and Watford. The pair returned after the moves went sour and returned to Latics but sadly they never found that great form again for us .
OLDHAMADE
Ryan http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1981-OLDHAM-ATHLETIC-V-BLACKBURN-ROVERS-TEAM-SHEET/271293813867?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D18223%26meid%3D1963289527675317670%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D8339%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D300962032448%26 Was at this game and won't ever forget the biting cold that day and the 0-3 easy reversal we suffered, Garner was a real menace! TH2002
I think that Paul Atkinson went on to be the Watford sub in their FA Cup final loss to Everton. Didn't Mark Ward mention John Ryan as a fellow inmate when he was inside? Could be wrong.
