Yes, because history isn't littered with players having a bad time somewhere and yet going on to do alright elsewhere...

Yes just look at Cornell ripping up trees on Northamptons bench, if some had their  way he'd be still here playing for us in the Conference.

Here’s a couple:

Ian Wright

A late bloomer, Arsenal’s goal-scoring legend Ian Wright wasn’t highly thought of as a young footballer. Attempting to make the grade at a multitude of different clubs, his talents weren’t enough to attract a contract offer from anyone that saw him play for a number of years – both Southend United and Brighton & Hove Albion all rejected the opportunity to sign him when he earned a trial at both clubs.

Then, a lucky break came his way when a Crystal Palace scout brought him on board where he flourished thanks to a successful partnership with Mark Bright. Soon thereafter, with confidence in himself sky-high, Arsenal came calling and the rest, as they say, is history.

Steve Bruce

Some hardcore England and Manchester United fans might heartily disagree with this assessment of Steve Bruce, but looking back on his early attempts to break into the professional sphere, it’s clear there was something important missing from his style of play, preparation and innate ability. Turned away by the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Burnley – he was eventually deemed good enough for Gillingham.

Securing a move to Manchester United, the legend of the beautiful game cemented his place among the pantheon of greats in double-quick time, but it could all have panned out so differently.

Oh and Matt Smith didn’t do too badly for himself...

Look he's average. He's better than Wilson and Ruddy.

Give me RIPLEY ??, Grant, Rachubka, Pogs, Kelly over him any time.

He's ok, but getting much more credit than is due because he's a dodgy fucker. Admitting he's the best we've got at the moment, but comparing him to the names above sums it up.

On a side note he's better than Richard O'Donnel and Ben '6' Amos.

What planet are you on and what games have you been watching. Placide is better than any keeper we have had at Oldham for years. When he plays he gives confidence to the whole defence. He’s confident at coming for crosses and he’s a decent shot stopper. His distribution is top notch. I have not seen a goalkeeper with his quality of distribution in league one for many years. To compare him to Richard O’Donnel or Ben Amos is crazy.

He's better than every keeper at the club and many from previous years....

He isnt better than last years keeper by a long way and this confident defence that plays in front of him leaks like a fkn sieve as does he.  However he can pass better than most including Ripley which as a goalkeeper despite popular belief on here is secondary to......GOALKEEPING!

Ripley was great. Trouble is.... he wasn’t our keeper.

How many of the goals we've conceded could he have done better with? How many of the goals we've scored this season could their keeper have done better with? And lastly, how many opposition keepers we've faced have turned a striker in the box before pinging a 70 yard ball up field leading to a goal being scored...?

Bryan is doing well at centre back..............................he isnt our defender

Byrne runs the midfield every match......................................he isnt our midfielder

Doyle is the best finisher in the division................................................he isnt our striker

Come on Einstein do you get the drift what the trouble is?  Do you need Uncle Simon to explain his plan to you again?

Wright still dresses like a twat though.

He's better than average but I agree he's no world beater. He has, and will, drop a few bollocks over the rest of this season.

His bog standard keeping isn't as good as Ripley's but while both can make a match winning save only Placide can make a match winning pass. And Ripley never lifted the crowd like JP has on several occassions.

Clearly if there was a chance of signing RIpley permanent in January we'd be daft not to but, I'd be intrigued to see how he would do for us playing in this more attacking style....

Both are/were very good - let's just enjoy the fact we've got an absolute character in nets who seems to like football and is also a pretty good keeper.....

Given the turnover of players nowadays players on season long loans from a higher level might now often be the ones looked back on as "great".

If we "owned" a good un he'd be off within 6 to 18 months anyway.....

If the takeover happens I can't see why the new owner would be dipping into his pocket to sign a loanee to replace one of his own lads who is doing pretty well.

He might be interested in putting a decent team together instead of bleeding every resource dry at the football club - novel idea I know but it may catch on.

Let's hope so.

Revolutionary idea, can't believe no one has thought of it before!
