Good players we could have signed

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking of good players we could have signed for one reason or another, trialists not taken on, those who turned us down due to not enough wages. Those reported in the media/press as signing permanently or on loan.

Or our own youths let go.

I remember seeing Sami Hyppia and Ashley Williams on trial, but not signed and the Oldham Chron reporting Alan Smith was going to sign on loan.

I think big Joe said he missed out on some he wanted in the glory years.

Any more you can recollect?

In my whole time supporting Latics I'm struggling to think of any youth players (by which I mean those who didn't feature much if at all in the first team) that we let go that were successful at a higher level.

Vardy wasn't good enough IIRC

Told by a Latics coach Lee Gregory at Halifax was watched, but not good enough. Went on to play in the Championship.

I saw Hyppia play on trial for us when reserves played at Stalybridge, didn’t look much good to me! Opinions

Not a player linked with us but just saw Gattuso has been sacked as Marseille manager, didn’t he apply to be our manager once?

Think we were linked with Gattuso at the time Lee Johnson left.

Joe had lined up David Batty but having been stung by releasing Dennis Irwin Leeds decided to keep him.

Sami Hypia played a behind the doors friendly at Stalybridge.

I recall it was  Alan Hardy said we didn’t need him..

Fairly confident Sharp said he was no better than what we had.

Probably a reason why his only managerial job after us was at Bangor.

We let Craig Dawson leave.

Didn't he break his leg in a friendly? Then Dale took the chance on him that we passed on.

To add to the list Ian Moore was virtually done until his Dad rang him.

I don’t think it was a leg break but we didn’t pursue him. I think we would have been on the end of a playoff win with him at the club.
