One of the Bury director's was interviewed on Radio Manchester before kick off and said there's a few potential investors who are genuine Bury fans that have been in negotiations with the club over the last couple of days and whilst nothing is signed yet, he says things are looking more positive...

Gary and Phil Neville?

Sorry to come back to this several pages later, but I'm sure there are other wealthy residents of the borough of Bury besides these two.

And anyway, despite appearances I would imagine they've got more sense.

Greater Manchester Police have issued the following statement in the wake of Latics' fans being locked out of Saturday's npower League One match at Bury.

It read: "Bury Football Club’s West Stand is the dedicated stand for away supporters and has a capacity of approximately 2,200.

"This was the dedicated stand for Oldham Athletic fans for their fixture on Saturday 13 April 2013 with Bury FC.

"It was anticipated by Bury FC that between 1,500 and 2,000 Oldham fans intended to attend this fixture, and therefore they could have been seated in the West Stand. Bury FC didn't think for a second that it would be a good idea to have a contingency plan for a few extra Oldham fans by having a section of the main stand left empty. Even though they were already expecting the away end to be over 90% full.

"Shortly before kick off it was apparent that the West Stand was full to capacity, with approximately 150 Oldham fans on the forecourt queuing in an attempt to get into the West Stand.

"The Club Safety Officer made the decision, which was supported by the police, in the interests of safety no more Oldham fans would be permitted entry to the ground. This is slightly odd, because, based on these figures, there were still 127 empty seats in the Manchester Road End.

"Consideration was given by the Club to facilitate another part of the ground for Oldham fans, but regrettably no another area could be safely secured in the short time that was available before the game kicked off. Even though asking a handful of Bury fans in the main stand to shove up a bit would have been quite easy.

"The fans remained on the forecourt and Bury Football Club informed these fans of the Club's decision and the reasons why. This group, to their credit, despite being disappointed dispersed peacefully from the forecourt.

"While it is regrettable that some of the Oldham fans could not gain entry to the game, the safety of the public is our number one priority. As such, we thought sending this group to the nearest pub and letting them drink themselves to oblivion was the best course of action.

"During the course of the day 10 people were arrested for minor public order offences. The good behaviour of both sets of fans has been recognised and applauded by Bury FC and GMP. Even though this matches the Millwall arrest total at Wembley that got on the main news."

Bury commercial director David Manchester, meanwhile, said that it was difficult to estimate the number of Athletic fans who would travel.

““I think they sold 900 tickets and suddenly more than 2,000 turned up. You can’t legislate for that,” he said.

Suddenly? The polcie were aware David, and you are responsible for home arrangements.

And as a Commercial Managerwould he not think that it might just be a good idea to plan for a little more?

See the picture in the Chron? There's more than 150 there. There's a nice tone about this response and explanation, but it's totally undermined by that one bit of total bull:censored:. GMP listen: we know you're in charge to an extent. You don't have to bull:censored: people routinely to establish that fact.

I would think the commercial manager is like a lot of managers in business, not up to much. There are the odd one or two in every company that are worth having, but the rest have no common sense.

ALL ticket decision would have helped. !!!!!!!!

Yes it would have but not as much as a competent bit of intelligence, decent policing and a contingency plan. Plus the ability for someone to actually make the decision, to move home fans, delay kick off and let every one in.

Making it all ticket might have made it worse. 2100/2200 tickets sold and a few more OAFC fans not able to buy them would have likely meant even more fans in the home ends. As it was the majority of people left quietly.

Bury FC, GMP and to a lesser extent OAFC made errors. It was obvious that a stand with a capacity of 2100/2200 (depending on who you believe) might not have been enough on Friday evening. If people cannot react in 22 hours to a serious problem then they don't deserve to be put in the position.

If they could allocate 3,000 seats to Sheffield Utd ...

they had issues with the Sheffield United following

But commercial director David Manchester said that possibility had been discounted on safety grounds.

“We’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t,” he said.

“What if we had opened both ends (to away fans) and then only a thousand turned up.

“I mean, we were supposed to be getting 3,000 when Sheffield United came here and how many did they bring? 900.

“You just don’t know until they turn up in a lot of cases.

“They (Oldham) hadn’t sold that many tickets. I think they sold 900 tickets and suddenly more than 2,000 turn up.

“You can’t legislate for that.

“It was suggested (that we open up a Bury end to the Oldham fans locked out) but it didn’t happen.

“There were concerns about safety issues.”

But even so if they gave us 3000 seats there wouldn't have been an issue on Saturday

Exactly!......how about "let's leave a couple of sections free in the end opposite the main stand, just in case "

There were hundreds of empty seats in there and it's not like the bury fans were gonna fill them.
