Greater Ignorant Manchester Police (GIMP)

Whoever assessed the situation and decided to keep one end of Tics in the ground at the final whistle must have been smacked off their heads - too many halftime Vimtos. The logic behind this course of action was risible and flawed, not least because:

  • If they wanted to clear the car park first and ensure the safety of away fans, don’t let the other stand of Tics out as they, er, could if inclined, quite easily be in said car park possibly exchanging pleasantries with the Bury kids - so objective not achieved
  • The announcement 10 mins before end of game was inevitably going to lead to a couple of hundred fans deciding to leave there and then. Yet the club and police seemed to be caught a little off guard, panicked, closing the gates and shoving everyone back thereby laying the foundatition stones for the ensuing trouble
  • then deciding to push fans back to the part of the stand where the Bury fans could goad and hurl coins (cowards) was pure genius
  • they then deployed riot/tactical unit police in three lines to show excellent communication skills whilst handling reasonable requests to leave with “I’m not listening. I don’t care what your reason is and no point telling me as I’m not listening.”

So,  having created a more inflammatory situation than if they had left it, they invited an aggressive reaction not only from some of our fans who enjoy a bit of trouble but many others too. They also made it difficult and stressful for everyone as my experience shows:

  • I approached the first line and before I even said anything, was pushed back and told it was pointless asking anything as they weren’t listening
  • even when I politely asked if I could go as I have Parkinson’s and needed to get back home near Huddersfield by 6pm to take next vital medication and showed them a card stating I have PD they continued to respond with “I’m not listening”  and “Don’t show me anything as I’m not looking.” until eventually I was forced to go down the line of identikit impassive officers amidst  the chaos, asking each one if I could leave.
  • Then, having go through line 1 I encountered their close cousins in line 2 who also played “pass the parcel” with my request, ensuring I asked them all before letting me through, having delightfully added an element of stress
  • the third line and gate-keeper was almost reasonable in comparison and I only spent two minutes discussing my request.  Opening the gate led to further frenzy as a few fellow Tics surged towards it. However this wasn’t necessarily the gatekeepers fault.
  • I noted more riot police running  towards the West Stand, rather gleefully I thought as I picked my way through some home fans who perhaps had left early to beat the traffic.

I’m never convinced keeping away fans in the ground at the final whistle works as a method of ensuring  safe passage as home fans can simply assemble and wait to confront or pick off away fans who are now easy to identify.

Anyway, despite the best efforts of the local police and Bury FC  officials I managed to get home in time and want to say thank you to a fellow Tic who saw my Parkinson’s card and helped my cause by asking for me to be let through. Very much appreciated (apart from referring to me as an “old man”!).

I hope everyone got home safely. A great turn out which deserved a better result.

Well over the top, they couldn’t wait to start lashing out at anybody in view, I know there was a few tools trying to leave but the police tactics was a disgrace,as for the bury tossers in the stand to the left spitting and coining the Oldham fans ( brave wankers) was left to do anything they wanted to do, it’s a sad situation that people like yourself have to get caught up in this situation, GMP at there finest

I could see the logic of keeping fans in at the end to clear the car park as they said. Tomorrow Liverpool will go to Old Trafford their fans will be kept behind after the final whistle they probably know this. But we clearly weren't kept behind as they opened the gates at the final whistle and we all left at the time I expected.

Your situation seems the exception to the norm and Im sorry you had a bad experience. However most people who tried to leave the ground at that end early could have easily waited behind and some went with the intention of causing bother. Had those people stayed where they were like were clearly asked then you wouldn't have had a problem.

It all seemed very "hold me back" "hold me back" between some our idiots and their idiots we all look dead hard by shouting come and have a go from behind a police line or a gate knowing full well knowone can get to you.

Finally its amazing how little trouble I find at football matches by simply not going looking for it or being sensible.

Nice story - sounds like you have never been to an away day before ...

I have and been kept behind a few times (Boothferry Park after an FA Cup runlives longin the memory) but I haven’t had to face it since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I’d rather not have it and the many marvellous symptoms which includes an erosion of confidence and I hope you never get it or anything similar. Really I don’t.

Send an email to the police and crime commissioner for Manchester (Andy Burnham). Citing how the police involved need to be made aware of their public duty to make reasonable adjustments for those with disabilities.

Take spare medication with you. Getting back to Huddersfield from Bury for 6pm is not always going to be guaranteed.

I know it's frustrating but a riot squad copper, especially one in Manchester, given who used to run it, is not going to budge to let one fan through. Although like you say it is daft given the other end of Latics fans were allowed out.

Made me laugh how they were giving it the big “I am” when they thought we were being kept in, and then were all hiding at the top of that stairwell when they saw we were actually out😂

I think you definitely need to send this account to the club, the police and the Football Supporters Federation

I think we've already established the OAFC SLO position is currently vacant, but there's probably no harm in copying a senior official at OAFC as well.

I’m an Oldham fan I sat in the main stand with my other half ( a Bury fan ) and a 3yr old child ( his first ever footy match ) having sat in the away at this fixture last season thought it better to be away from the Oldham knuckle scrapers who were out for nothing but trouble last year. So as I sat and watched it was rather embstssing to say the least watching some idiots just as the game kicked off trying to appear hard and looking to pull the hoardings down. Which if he’s wanted to be coujd but in reality wasn’t brace enough to do so and just looked an idiot like many others. Mr Top Off man now with too what a tool! Rightly escorted offski early doors. As far as police heavy handed everyone that was of the group of idiots was in my opinion lucky not to be thrashed and bounced through the stand by the boys in blue. The Bury fans were also tools sat behind me. Yes they did coin throw and goad but there was just as many coins coming the other way. All in all it was shameful and beyond belief that folk think this is a good idea st a football game. CCTV and police evidence should be hopefully used to ban all the idiots that decided to engage in the course of action.

Good first half though. Was about the highlight of the day.

The club have a Disability Liaison Officer too. They would probably be the best person to copy in.

But, the tannoy person said it was for Oldham fans safety and comfort?!

Silly decision, if anything they should have let the other stand stay behind, as there wasnt the "trouble" element in that stand. Would have been better just forming a police line and pushing oldham fans to the town centre. Its the most overpoliced game Latics have for some bizarre reason.

Sounds like George was thrown out again??......I wasn't there unfortunately on Saturday, but if true and justified, then he really does himself or the club no favors and should be banned from all Latics away games. He's had more 2nd chances than I can remember.

My young lad who is 11, feels uncomfortable regularly at away game when sat/stood around him, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone sooner or later does a real proper job on him as I suspect he's about as hard as a eunach's prick.

He's a complete embarrassment to the football club.
