I've said this about Bradford and Wigan now, but it's an attractive fixture to open it, unless we continue in this form, in which case it'll be a dead-cert defeat.

Probably a pretty full away end with 2000 Blades and hopefully we could muster 5000 for the opening...

I'll be surprised if we muster 5,000 full paying home fans ever again.

Playing the right type of football at the right end of the table 5'000 is very doable

I'm split. Without doubt this top half, good football, 4-sided ground, bouncing atmosphere exile has lost some for good, or at least 'til we're out if this league, which could mean for good, but we did get over 6000 average in 2007 for the play-off year. They've fluctuated while we've been in this league. It went below 5000 in 2001, then rose by a couple of thousands, and now we're back in a trough. So you could say it will peak again in the future.

Only difference though is that it's been longer since we've been in the Premier League and the memories are fading, plus City are a lot better now.

What depresses me is seeing Tranmere getting 6000 in the Conference. Their fans have stuck by them and ours have given up. So, from 2008, despite going down two leagues, the difference in attendances have gone from 150 to almost 1500.

Though to add its very hard to get a ticket for Liverpool, less so MUFC and MCFC is growing.

Speaking about Liverpool, my colleague who sits next to me has just been voted as the main Liverpool fan rep (for the season ticket holders).

Lets just say, he has a bit more nouse than Baz.

Might be a bit controversial, this, but here goes: these days I think there is more perceived identity to being from the Wirral than there is from being from Oldham/Rochdale/Stockport etc.

If you ask a kid from Oldham where they're from now they'll probably say Manchester. If you ask someone from the Wirral they wouldn't say they're a scouser. The increased transport links, merged council/death of the towns has meant these towns have lost their identity somewhat. I think that is, and will be just as damaging as City's money. Not to say the Manchester clubs haven't always taken fans from Latics, just that I think it will increase in the future without Oldham improving.

Know quite a few LFC ST holders. Lots of discontent there about the way Anfield has become. Big job on his hands...

I don't see what difference that makes.

My kids spend far more time in Manchester City Centre than Oldham Town Centre.

As did I.

My son lives in his Oldham kit and even my daughter who hates football answers "Oldham" rather than "nobody" when asked who she supports.

You could even argue, with Manchester being so much more accessible nowadays, kids - especially groups of young lads - might even place extra emphasis on the fact they're from Oldham whether in a football sense or otherwise...

SC always harping on about having the Manchester clubs on our doorstep is just another one of the clubs Jedi mind tricks - alongside spending money on better players being "baaaaad!".

It was much easier & cheaper to go to United or City last time we got crowds this poor and no doubt it was the time before & the time before that yet there's always been a huge increase as soon as we've had a bit of success.

I don't see why that would change.

They'd be right.

Maybe they would (I'm sure some would disagree) but the point is that they don't firstly identify as from Oldham.

That's fine if you've got parent/s that support Oldham, but if you're a child from Oldham whose parent/s don't go to watch football then where they identify themselves from is far more relevant, I'd say. As is who your mates support, which is why we'll see more and more lads supporting Oldham and City, rather than either or.

Of course how Latics do in the league has the most bearing on the attendances, I just reckon that, with some exceptions, the more you consider yourself to be from an area, the more likely you're going to support the team which plays there. The more that Manchester sucks in the towns nearby, the lower the potential crowds will be at their clubs.

I've lived in Preston all my life. I had latics forced upon me. So will my daughter haha

I quite agree on both counts and yes a massive job for my colleague, though I would also describe him as a disgruntled season ticket holder.

You make some good points. Central Manchester (which now includes the Quays and Old Trafford) grew for 200 years as a service centre for the whole region. A city of half a million could never assume the regional importance of Manchester unless it served a much bigger area. This includes Greater Manchester and beyond (parts of the High Peak, Macc, Warrington etc). Some people give the impression that there has always been some kind of plot by Manchester politicians to take-over the region. It's untrue. Manchester needs and relies on the region. That's why it exists as it does. I've never had a problem with that. I've always loved going to the centre. it belongs to all of us.

Recent trends in retail have totally undermined town centres. Retail parks, internet shopping and the demand for specialised shops that only a big centre like Manchester can provide (plus the Trafford Centre) have all eroded the importance of towns like Oldham, Rochdale and Ashton. Added to that is fact that while Manchester can compete for investment/jobs in a global market, and it means that the importance of towns continues to diminish.

So, yes, we've always had a closer link to the centre, more other conurbations like West Yorkshire. Those ties are getting closer because of local and global economic trends. However, i still think that local identities can be maintained. Look at Wigan and Bolton. What we really need is s bit of success.
