Bolton, in their current state, could be in the wilderness longer than we have been. League 1 with £6m debt and 3,000 fans or League 1 (or possibly lower) with £179m debt and quite possibly sub 10,000 fans. They are only getting 13,-14,000 now. A couple of years languishing in this division could really impact that. The glory hunters will disappear in droves, if you recall. They'd go into admin, ditch the debt, swallow the points deduction, and bounce back in a few seasons. They're not going to lose that entire fan base - a sniff of success in the lower divisions and they'd be getting five figure crowds again easily. We're down to sub 2,000 hardcore fans. I honestly can't remember . I'm sure there were aspirations and ambitions - but nobody could promise promotion or success. Let's remember that the early years of our decline into this division we were owned by Lees, who absolutely refused to invest. Great joy when Moores took over, and maybe he issued empty promises, but whatever he took us to the very precipice of non-existence. TTA saved us from that ...it would have been great if we'd had the success we yearned for but we haven't. If - when - they go we'll have new owners again. You could also look at it that if both called in the full amount of their debt with the club's in their current state then they will not just bankrupt the club's but they won't ever have a chance of seeing that money again. Hence why neither club are in as bad a peril as they seem on the surface and our debt is at least £8.2 million probably nearer £10 million. Hence we will recognise the stadium as an asset in our balance sheet thats pretty much how a lease like this works. We don't rent the stadium we own the stadium just not the land. Same as marriage, you go into it with the best of intentions but there is an awful lot of washing up, tidying away, discussing things like colours, soft furnishings, shoes and what Helen did or did not say or do at work that day. Spending time with mothers or friends you try and keep off the topic of local house prices..etc.. But there are good points that make it worthwhile. If Boltons's debt was far more manageable, say, £25m then I'd be saying good for them, and that is fair enough having a punt. But £175m, it's not monopoly money, it's money owed, its been wasted, and it's not even been gifted. For that sort of money, I'd want us to be an established Prem team.
