Latics have to play Gateshead twice in the near future and a good win will hand them the psychological advantage. Unfortunately, it's just not going that way at the moment. Of course, progress in the league and avoiding relegation is ultimately the most important aspect but Latics are where they are and losing by playing shite in this will not do any good.
