Kettling supporters outside of the ground,, denying them toilet facilities  by shuttering the away end exits behind them, and taking no account of  the more vulnerable, away fans, seems to be a bizarre decision by Merseyside Police to say the least. If they had specific info that things were likely to go off outside, surely they could have just held the away fans back in the stand or the concourse, as is normal practice elsewhere?

It made absolutely no sense whatsoever. If they had 'intelligence' that there was going to be trouble outside, why on earth would they let people out of the ground and then pen them in the exact spot this supposed trouble was meant to be happening? If they had 'intelligence' there was going to be trouble, why would they close off the road to Rock Ferry station (where a lot of people were making their way to), tell people to walk in the opposite direction towards the town centre, and have no police at all 100 yards down the road, where people were wandering around not sure where they were going and where anyone who was looking for trouble could have happily beat the shit out of a load of lost Oldham fans who'd been forced off the route they were familiar with? It stinks of them deliberately causing trouble to justify charging you more for policing in future. Fuck knows what they'll do if you get Liverpool or Everton in the FA Cup.

I suggested that the whole exercise was way over the top and totally unnecessary and one or two of the bobbies agreed with me.

Keeping us in the ground for 20 mins would have been safer surely.

A couple of those coppers were really up for a confrontation.

I would love to know just how much the policing bill cost!

The only firm that were up for trouble outside the ground was the plod themselves, absolute shit houses the lot of them and the bollocks they are spouting trying to justify their neanderthal behaviour is frankly embarrassing, so what if a few of our fans have had a drink a bit of a sing song at halftime and enjoy an away day, as far as I'm aware none of that is a crime.

A drink and a sing song isn't a crime. But being in possession, (nevermind letting them off), of pyro is a crime.

I don't think it should be. As I think it's a football only law.

Over the top policing inside the ground which screamed out they hadnt seen a lively crowd for a few years but IF there was a planned a scrap at the prenton pub right outside where we was walking out i am glad of the 15 min wait as i took my daughter to the game..

The cops seemed intent on making a statement and ive seen the footage of about seven of them jumping on one lad, we was shown a glimpse of how footy fans were treated in the 80’s with cops penning us in, cops on horseback and cops with there yapping dogs in an attempt to intimidate.

I doubt there would have been a fight at the pub with 100 police and the firearms unit standing there whether they held us or not!

Other events see pyrotechnics set off on a regular basis, why should a football fan be treated any differently? You don't see all this palaver when a flare is let off at a concert with all the crowd penned in and kettled as a result of a couple of peoples actions.

One of the worst examples of the way football fans are treated in relation to the general public I witnessed on the way home from Grimsby on the train, a group of Latics fans were told by the police escorting our train back to Manchester to shut up and be quiet, their crime was talking too loudly and having a bit of a laugh amongst themselves, they were threatened with arrest at Manchester if they didn't behave.

Now when the train pulled in to Doncaster to take home the stragglers from the races on Leger day the racegoers were singing, drinking and dancing the whole way to Sheffield without a word from the officers on board - wankers.

Also amazing how Tranmere as a club have enough respect and trust to open up their fanzone (which was superb) to away fans and yet the police treat the same people like dirt.

I've made my complaint to Merseyside Police, won't hold my breath.

Oh I'm fully aware in the differences between policing (and stewarding) for football and other events.

Most of it stems from Thatcher's government. Some of which were added after Hillsborough, based on potentially criminal lies, from the police.

Whilst they are unlikely to produce much so late after the Grimsby game I encourage every football fan to note the contact details for Amanda Jacks (already covered by Rosa earlier in the thread). She has a good record of protecting fans against the police and other sanctions. https://twitter.com/FSF_FairCop?s=09

I was unable to attend on Saturday which in the run up to the game I was pretty gutted about. But after the post match treatment of our fans I can only be thankful for my non attendance. Treating supporters in the way they have only engenders a siege mentality amongst fans, it also harms Tranmere as a club, I would imagine if we are in the same division next season a proportion of fans will give it a miss. Treat people with respect and you will get respect in return.

Bit of perspective reqd here. Yes it was a nuisance being kept in but it meant standing around for 20 mins-not a problem if you are able bodied. Why it would put you off attending in future escapes me. I thought the atmosphere was fantastic all game, hopefully even more will go next year and fill the stand, there was more threat of violence at last years Bury game than here.

As for the pub where we were kettled-it was closed doors so no threat of trouble in there. The Bobbies I spoke to were almost apologetic and embarrassed at what was going on.

I have to admit it did take me back to the good old days of South Yorks police experiences.

Exactly. I came on my own via Rock Ferry as I have on many occasions previously. They forced me to turn up the main road towards Birkenhead when I wanted to go back to the route I knew to Rock Ferry. I pointed that out to one of the plod and in no uncertain terms he told me to go down that direction if I wanted. I did, along with what I saw were one or two others, and I expected the plod who were there to then let us through. Instead they just started going for us. I had to jump out of way of a van and a charging horse but a couple of others weren't so lucky and were arrested. I managed to get out of the way and made my way back up the main road towards Birkenhead and then went through back streets on my tod to double back towards Rock Ferry. I suppose partly can be seen as stupidity on my part as I should, in hindsight, have walked to Birkenhead and caught train from there. I think the only thing one or two of those arrested for was for trying, like me, to get to Rock Ferry.

Cardiff at Everton on the same day, same kick off, my guess is they wanted to keep us back as long as possible to avoid any potential confrontation between fans in the centre or at the station.

If there was going to be any bother keeping us back would have caused, it, thought our fans were pretty restrained under the circumstances.

I wonder. Keeping us in, then not letting us to the nearest station. We hailed a black cab and he'd only take us to Birkenhead, which makes no sense (You pay the toll for there and back and he'd be right in the City for another job). Does smell of delaying us getting over the water.

Makes sense, but why haven't the police just said that instead of going on about the Prenton Park pub?

Maybe a new statement will be released claiming "yeah, that's what we we're doing. Preventing a confrontation in Liverpool. Definitely...".

Whatever happened to Tranmere playing their home games on a Friday to prevent such clashes? Well I assume that’s why they did it?

It was more to attract Liverpool and Everton fans to adopt them as their second team. Not worth doing now that Liverpool rarely play at 3pm on a Saturday.

Did we do that for a while too?

When I first started going in the late 60’s we used to kick off at 3.15, never sure why that was.

think we played a few Friday night games , to try to attract more fans, but Stockport did for many years in the 70’s and 80’s
