oafc1955
John Hurst has died. Played 170 games for Latics between 1976-81. A great player for us when players saw out their careers in the lower leagues which doesn’t happen anymore. RIP.

Frankly Mr Shankly
Sad news. Big association with Everton and was good mates with Joe Royle who used him as a scout for us and Citeh. He was a bit before my time but someone who played over 170 matches for us should always be held in high esteem. RIP John.
peanuts2
Always seamed to have time on the ball effortless movement be it to tackle or recieve a pass made the game look easy R.I.P. John
L1onheartNew
Hurst was pure class. Jobson was the closest in relative terms. RIP
Bobledgersheart
I remember one match when towards the final whistle he looked a little knackered, whereupon he bent at the waist and shook his whole body and played on seemingly invigorated. A thorough professional. RIP
kev1970
What very sad news. Very good player one I remember from my early years watching the latics. RIP
Boyyou
Wonderful player for Latics. Although the legs were beginning to go, his reading of the game, anticipation, coolness under pressure and distribution marked him out as quality. But for the presence of Bobby Moore he could have been an England hero. RIP Gentleman Jack.
Ogdenwoodwhittle
John Hurst oozed class and was a fixture in our defence, during our second division days, when I regularly was able to go to Latics and stand/hang on to the perimiter wall in the old Rochdale Road end. Happy days, and great memories. RIP John
BP1960
Sad news, he was one of my favourite players. Bags of class and always seemed to have time on the ball. Similar to Alan Hansen if you can imagine that.
L1onheartNew
I remember his screamer at Orient. One of the "tick off the ground" days. Think we lost 5-3.

LaticsPete
An outstanding player, calm, strong, and with great vision. One of Frizz’s greatest signings.
Hemel latic
Grateful for all the memories of a player before my time, as said above respect for the 170 appearances in our colours and clearly a class player. RIP John.
Dave_Og
The comparison with Richard Jobson is spot on.

Sheridan and Eyres would be on the list too. Chris Eagles retired after playing for us briefly and Paul Murray retired after being on our books, but I don't recall him playing. I'd say Shez is the only one of those that counts

Dickie Down
A tremendous player for Latics and part of my composite team of the best players I have seen play for Latics. He was part of a real upgrade in personnel that saw us move away from the stalwarts who had gained us two promotions to players with more obvious pedigree. I am not sure if it was on the same day, but we signed Vic Halom, a recent FA Cup winner, to join John Hurst, a recent Division 1 league winner. Great signings both. Later, he combined very effectively with Kenny Clements, who was very quick and good in the air. In style, he certainly had the time of Jobson, but played off the centre half, rather than being dominant in the air. Maybe Sean Gregan in style, if not quality, would be a decent comparison?
LaticMark
A few warm words from Joe Royle: . . . and an obituary on Everton's website. www.evertonfc.com/news/3861181/rip-john-hurst Edited January 19 by LaticMark
Worcester Owl
So sad to hear this. I remember him so well, back in the days when I didn’t miss many home games. I was so excited when he decided to join us, as @oafc1955says, it was a time when top flight players were happy to finish their careers at a lower level. He was a very good player, a real professional.

Longlostfan
Great player. Had a lot of power in his boots. Seemed an old man to the young me but boy could he play. As said above part of a gradual rebuild to better things. RIP John
Dickie Down
It may be that John Hurst played a significant role in bringing Joe Royle to the club in 1982. Certainly he would have been able to provide both parties with a view on the other.
