I went to a Grammar school and it was :censored:. Came out with loads of O levels and all the A levels but not much actual education!

That's one of the problems with the 11 plus. You can catch a dunce on a good year ;)

But I'm not saying grammar schools are the solution, more that they weren't replaced well.

My dear mother would probably have agreed

Actually for once we agree! But let's not make a habit of it.

I just resent the argument trotted out by the right wing that a good socialist has to carry their beliefs into every single aspect of their life even when it goes so far that it penalises their choices and even the futures of their children. Those critics seem to think in a strange way that it justifies their own view of the world

State school. Only a few GCSE's... Proper street smart though me, innit. Swings and roundabouts.

Not sure I'm the right person to extol the virtues of private education having suffered it myself (last year of direct grant politics fans, I certainly wouldn't have gone had I been a year younger). I can comment on right to buy (I assume that's what you mean) which is the most divisive, vicious policy even Thatcher and her followers managed to come up with (and boy did they try). I have also never stated the offer from this (again I assume you mean Oldham) Labour is "crap" but if it is (which it isn't) it's due to the Tory government's desire to hammer northern Labour councils with plainly unfair settlements.

Let's sign Ched though eh?

I was talking about schools in Haringay ....nothing else

  • 3 weeks later...

His case is being looked at next week and he believes he'll be playing again very soon if he wins.

For Sheffield United.

I've heard he's attending court wearing a Blackpool kit underneath his suit, shinners included. His missus will have the scarf in her handbag ready for the signing pics on the Strand.

Court of appeal hearing starts tomorrow

forgive my ignorance of the courts - not that I'm a good lad just never been caught - but assuming the appeal goes his way will this prove his innocence or just pave the way for a retrial.

You can't prove innocence. It would mean that the court found that he is not proven to be guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

For many the issue is not only about whether he's techincally guilty of a crime or not, but his actions in general and those of his close family and friends from the incident to current day.

But given this sort of totally disgusting attitude toward women is openly celebrated these days (watch any of the MTV reality tv shows if you can stomach it), it's no surprise so many are willing to look past that, and just put it down to lads being lads. Especially if the 'lad' in question can score a few goals.

But the fact that he was found guilty is the reason we are all talking about it in the first place.
