Playing Squad - Summer 23

It's quite simple really. A striker of Norwood's age will never score 30 goals a season at this level. But it's a reasonable expectation for Norwood to have scored 30 goals this season at this level. And he hasn't lived up to that reasonable expectation to score 30 goals this season, so he's underperformed and it's largely his fault we're 9th. And we know that this is what the club expected of him when they signed him because they never came out and said it.

Perfect summary.

Look if people think that 17 goals constitutes a good season and value for money then you are more than welcome to hold that view.

You'd be wrong of course, but you are entitled to be.

I'm no Norwood fan, but it's a reasonable return.  If the "recruitment department" thought spunking all that money on him would guarantee 30 goals from him, they really have mis-judged it...

That, sir, is a gem. Take a bow. Would double upvote it if I could!

12 goals from open play is not great at all. They have indeed had their pants pulled down.

The more I think about Norwood, the more I think David Unsworth put his entire eggs in one basket expecting him to be a silver bullet solution. Problem was* the pennies left in the budget went on Freeman; a player that had 3 overlapping yellow 'Whoops!' price stickers on him and Brennan Dickenson; a Rolls Royce with every warning light flashing**.

* Yes, I know the real problem was DU...

** I have used this analagy for Dan Gardner...

I largely disagree with this. If we had a much better midfield that creates chances for strikers to run on to then he would have scored more and he may well have been approaching 30 goals. I think most of us would agree that the midfield has been generally woeful all season.

Wins man of the match and never plays another minute for us.

Sums this season up.

More confusion!….we were playing 352 and Sachdev was signed because he’s a specialist in the position of RWB,  Mellon said so himself.

He has a MOM performance in that position and then is dropped, never to be seen again.

Since then we’ve played a couple of different players in that position including Sutton who is not really a FB and definitely not a wing back (sq peg in round hole) which was the reason we brought in Sachdev in the 1st place.

Now he says we still haven’t got a RB and Sachdev can’t play RB….. surely a RWB is also able to play RB?

IMO Sachdev played here as a FB anyway as I never saw him get up the pitch and go past a player even once while he was here!

I’m now so confused I’ve confused myself….it seems Mellon is confused too!😂😂

It's still the case that he's misses 1:1s in every game I've seen  this season, starting about three minutes in at Southend  Popping half of those in might well have made the difference

Manchester United use them..Garnacho and Antony.

City often use one.

Argentina won the World Cup with Di Maria.

They aren’t traditional wingers. They’re more inside forwards.

A 34yo isn't scoring 30 goals.

Whilst 30 may be a stretch, I’d have him over Will Grigg every day of the week and he’s bagged 24 this season, despite only scoring about 20 in his previous 130 games.

You know why?

1. He’s playing Vanarama level football a not L1

2. He has the likes of Dobra, Mandeville & Colcough creating for him.

Sort out the service, reap the rewards.

I see Norwood took in the Morecambe v Crewe game last night, personally I don't give a fuck what the players do in their own time.

Scenes when he signs for The Shrimpers in Piergianni style in a couple of months.

Saying that we've not won in ten with him in the team so the conspiracy theorists amongst us may think it's all part of the plan, still not sure why he looks so happy maybe it's the sea air that's cheered him up.

It was a bizarre MOTM award though!

Given his pace, strength and commitment I wouldn't be surprised to see Sachdev have a decent career, but at this very early stage of it he wasn't what we needed. He was woeful.

Not disagreeing with that at all, still he had his best game for us that day and wasn't even in the matchday 16 after despite travelling which was just weird.

Who was the last inside forward who made an impact with us?
