What throws it into really big doubt for me is the recruitment since Mellon arrived. Absolutely abysmal.

I don’t think you can say that in absolute terms for certain. He’s made 3 permanent signings I think - Garner looked decent initially and Conlon and Hammond could for different reasons be a lot better next season, after more games and a full summer. Loans haven’t gone well but options are more limited mid-season.

If I remember rightly we were told that Brabin has a great eye for a player. So with a bigger pool to choose from and more room in the budget I would expect summer recruitment to be better.

He's signed 7 (?).  2 made today's 16.  None are nailed on starters.

Stones, Garner, Conlon and Dallas (ok not worked out but clearly a solid signing on paper) aren't abysmal for mid-season recruitment by any stretch.

The problem with mid-season recruitment as well is that unless you're spending the big bucks on someone like McCallum who would probably hit the ground running, you're either getting inexperienced players (Hammond, Sachdev) or players who haven't played much football and are lacking a bit of edge (Conlon and Dallas). Sometimes they work out (Stones) but the fact so many had to be brought in shows how poor the recruitment was last summer in hindsight.

Two are crocked, one is a striker who is yet to score and one has has had minimal impact

I don’t know the answer to this question as I don’t follow other clubs carefully enough, but did we miss out on anyone mid-season? Were there players that moved clubs that we should have gone for? I’d be surprised if there were many. There’s a world of difference in availability between summer and mid-season as you point out.

Stones getting injured was typical Latics misfortune. I think Dallas could come good given time, Garner seems a better partnership with Fondop and if what we are told is true, Conlon's mentality has been fucked by his family telling him he made the wrong choice of club.

Conlon is an absolute basket case in my view. He does seem to clap sarcastically at the end of the game. He’s so one footed it’s untrue, thinks he’s the bollocks but he gets the run around from national league players and as a dead ball specialist, he’s been hooked off corners and free kicks within about 10 games.

Should be a hair model or something.

I think a midfield 3 with Conlon playing further forward, Hammond doing a lot of the running and a new addition to pick the ball up from defence could work really well next season.

Edit - granted I'm basing that purely on what he did for Port Vale, he hasn't shown much at all for us.

He's also surely someone who will benefit from having a settled midfield partnership. He has a different partner every week at the moment, be it Sheron/Lundstram/McGahey/Hammond. That can't help when you're already coming in rusty and lacking gametime. That's not to defend his performances which have been poor

Would we give Dallas time?  Seems pretty clear that Barnsley have written him off - farming him out back to this level doesn't smack of them being sure they got a player good enough for L1

Has he actually had a sniff of a chance at goal yet? Yesterday he put himself about but never looked like getting near the goals.

Still if if you run about a lot then Latics fans will tell keep telling us there is a player in there (like Lundstram).

Id be very worried if Hammond is in the starting 3 midfielders next season.

Take your other points though.

He had a feeble effort from the edge of the box and later in the game should have been played in by Conlon who instead opted to take on a shot (well, I think it was Dallas).

I don't think he's been particularly good but, in my opinion, both him and Norwood (and us generally) would look a completely different outfit with wide/creative players that know what they're doing and commit players so there's space. I look at Chesterfield's squad and they're packed with invention and courage just behind the front man.

It could go either way with him. I think he's shown glimpses but nothing consistent. He's young though, so what we see now will probably not be reflective of his whole career.

I suppose, but when I look at young midfield players I look at the technical ability. He’s not great on the ball and doesn’t look comfortable running with the ball at all. - I’d much prefer a Harry Vaughan type.

He brings much needed energy to this team, but that’s about it. I don’t think he’s good enough.

Dallas has bagged 20 goals at NL level in the last 2 seasons he's a gun striker at this level. We didn't see any evidence of that for the first month or so but I see why in the last couple of weeks why he's been a sort after player. The fact him and Norwood haven't scored in a while tells us that their is a problem in the build up and our patterns of play. We had quite abit of the ball yesterday with McGahey Conlon and Gardner who did a solid enough job of making sure we had good possession yesterday but they are all playing 15-20 yards behind the striker. None of them can break the lines and get into the penalty area to support Norwood so he became isolated and started to brood.

We have two proven strikers who are struggling to score goals and some fans will still claim it’s the strikers fault. We have fuck all service.

I’ve resigned to the fact we are shit. Unsworth didn’t like creative players and it’s absolutely fucked us.

He a strange one- he has a way of receiving and passing the ball like it’s a photoshoot. A bit like a keeper making a camera save. It’s like he showing off his technique, when the actual pass is usually quite simple. 😂

Now I’ve come to terms with the fact we’re gonna be spending another season in this league, I remain optimistic with Mellon.

We have a team full of absolute bottle merchants. That much is clear. They can play better when there’s less pressure and we’re seen as the situational underdogs, such as Chesterfield or when we’re behind to an in-form Altrincham or a man down against Fylde. But then the expectation weighs on the players, they can’t deliver.

I’m not absolving players like Norwood of any blame, but I totally understand his frustrations. Conlon, debut aside, has looked lost.

But the biggest thing for me, is we have gone thru an entire season without any real pace outlets, no good wingers and very little central midfielders who can collectively control a game.

As a result, we can’t dominate games. Our creativity is seriously lacking, and our defenders have no passing options so resort to hoofing. If they had more balls about them, we’d look a lot better.

That being said, I feel we need two full backs and an entire midfield.

Kitching can go for me. If the Reid situation bothers him so much, follow him out of the door. We need a specialist right back, that much is obvious.

Conlon, Gardner, Lundstram and Sheron can stay, but not sure I’d put my house on any of them being nailed on starters, but definitely squad options. Bring in a DM who can control a game, bring in a #10 similar to CCC (who we should have gone all out for) and bring in 2 wingers. Proper, fast wingers.

Id also like a pacey forward.

And one thing we have to remember, it took Notts County, Wrexham and Stockport a long time to get out of this division. Same for Chesterfield. I think it’s about time we started respecting this division (myself included).

McGahey

Norwood

Gardner

Nuttall

Lundstram… have been out together today.

If they’re pissed up while the play offs are still mathematically possible then surely they should be disciplined.

I know Nuttall is at Cheltenham atm but fine him anyway. :)
