Ripley - Still a possibility?

I remember that from the championship winning VHS me old Man had - there's an interview with Hallworth and he says something along the lines of  'at first everyone was saying 'ooh we want Andy Goram back, bring Andy Goram back... But that's stopped now' followed by a properly smug grin.

It's the same video where Ian Marshall is asked for his best goal of the season after the opening day hattrick at Wolves and he glibly replies 'derrs been so many'. ?

Superb player, superb mullet.

A little bit sad but I knew every single word of commentary on that VHS. I was only ten tho. Has it ever been released on disk ? Would love to see it again.

I remember Jon Hallworth getting a bit tired of hearing talk of Andy Goram returning after Andy Rhodes left...... made him perform even better in my opinion.

Hallworth was the number 1 goalkeeper at that point and had been here for at least 2 years. He was settled...

A new keeper at this level wouldn't get the same treatment from fans. Being top of the league helped the fans forget Goram.

If boro are signing Johnstone then I can't see a future there for Ripley at all. Can see him being sold to a club lower in the champ rather than loaned anywhere. Or a league 1 club with money.

They shared it almost equally IIRC.

Royle kept changing them everytime one made a couple of mistakes.

Rhodes played in the League Cup Final. Hallworth played in the F.A. Cup S/F's.

In my opinion, Hallworth was the better keeper. Rhodes could pull off the spectacular but was more likely to drop a clanger.

Hallworth was definitely the more consistent of the 2, but Rhodes had a certain madness that endears you to a goalie. (I hasten to add madness not in the Andy Gorton sense).

....and the sad thing is, I can tell you that was after the Swindon game at home. Yet, I can't recall a conversation I had with the wife last week.

Rhodes was fucking awful at kicking, good at throwing, dubious at coming for crosses but a brilliant shot stopper and one-on-one specialist.

Hallworth was great at kicking and distributing, strong on crosses, superb at shot stopping but fucking hopeless at hand-to-hand combat with pisscans outside Monty's.

Hallworth > Rhodes, innit.

Wow....don't remember any of this shit being said when either Hallworth or Rhodes were around....I thought they were both quality keepers (do agree about Andy Rhodes kicking) and didn't actually mind which one was playin. ...don't think either of them let us down...and remember, they had to adapt to playing on the plastic...
