Greatest Free Kicks

Rowe's there today was a belter.

Possibly Latics' best ever?

I'd have to trapes through the works of Jose, Shez, Eyresey and Lee Richardson during their Latics days on Youtube for contenders, I think.

Think the main contenders are Jose at home to Preston in his first stint, Eyresey at home to Plymouth in about 2004 and Shez at Hull in the Cup in about 2002.

Any others?

You’d also have to ignore anything pre mass film coverage. Some great free kicks and players you’ve listed but only “possibly best “ of last 45 years or so.

Bobby Johnstone , for example, whipped in some pearlers .

As was mentioned in the Exeter thread, Maurice Whittle could strike a dead ball as good as anyone I have seen (accepting that the ball has changed over the years allowing for different movement). But to score from the distance Rowe did today takes some doing.

My favourite free kick for sheer pleasure was Jose at Forest, I will take that moment to my grave.

Do they still exist? They used to be given for obstruction.

It might be that obstruction seems to have disappeared from the game.  It's now skill to shield a ball out that's 2m away from you, when it was a free kick until the 80s.

It'd be good to see it brought back in to give a bit more chance for balls over the top.

Recall several specials by Denis Irwin - one at Goodison in the League Cup which put us 1-0 up against the League Champions, another at Roker Park in 1986/87 when he slammed one into the Roker Baths End to put us 1-0 up.

Whittle always a great dead ball specialist

Saying that, can't recall one from that distance off the top of my head
