Good work again, Andy, but I wish you hadn't re-posted the tables. I've been trying to forget my relegation and then you do this to me. :cry:

A Predictor of your experience would be expected to challenge at the top end of the Championship next season Pete.

However, a word of warning..... 107 points wouldn't have been good enough to keep you in the Championship either, such was the quality on show.

Also, all 3 Predictors @Harry Bosch, @Handsy & @warwickshire latics relegated from the Premier League in 2016/17, suffered back to back relegations last season. :o

*****NEW FEATURE KLAXON ALERT*****

So, it might be apparent to those paying attention that some Predictors forget to post a Prediction from time to time.

The odd game here and there isn't the end of the world, for instance @singe who won the Championship with the 2nd highest points total in 2017/18 Prediction League, failed to post a Prediction on 5 occasions, meaning his 153 points were amassed over only 41 games. @astottie in the Premier League failed to post a Prediction twice.

However, for those of us who are even more forgetful, from 2017/18 I'm aiming this post at @ajw65, @dave_ragg1984, @LaticsChris, @Latics_Fanatic@LightDN123, @LT_SMASH, @MAC0AFC, @NewBlue@RobOAFC, @Scapegoat, @warwickshire latics, & @youngen and from previous seasons @Andy-latic, @BJBlue, @Laticsbiffo, @JoshOWTB, @Kusunga_Is_God & @Ryan, this coming season we will introduce an email/text message reminder feature, should you wish to receive one.

An email to text message Gateway Domain allows an email to be turned into a text message via an address supplied by your mobile phone network provider.

The following Gateway Domains are available for those who's network provider is listed below;

Network provider - Gateway domain - Set up advice

3 - +44##########@three.co.uk

EE - +44##########@mms.ee.co.uk

BT - +44##########@btinternet.co.uk

O2 - +44##########@mmail.co.uk - Text "ON" to 212

Vodafone - +44##########@vodafone.net

Virgin - +44##########@vxtras.com

My intention is to supply an email/text message reminder service 1 hour before KO, which coincides with the team sheet being announced, allowing or every signed up Predictor - wishing to receive said service - a timely prompt to post their Prediction with maximum info to hand. In reality - as I'm doing this from my own personal time - I may not always be able to do it exactly 1 hour before KO, so I will commit to doing it for every game sometime prior, on occasions the day before.

If you think this feature will be helpful to you, I will require you to send me a PM with your OWTB username, your mobile phone number and your Gateway Domain address. For those of you who's network provider does not offer a Gateway Domain service [eg Sky], you will only be able to receive an email, therefore simply PM me your email address if you wish to receive an email reminder.

T&C's

  • You will need to contact your network provider to confirm your Gateway Domain is set up [subject to one being available] and subsequently what the Gateway Domain address is.
  • You should check if costs are incurred with your network provider (and that you are happy to pay them) before you agree to setting up and/or supplying me with your details. FYI, when I tested it, I wasn't charged anything.
  • By agreeing to supply your mobile phone number and/or email address you are providing permission for me to supply this service to you.
  • You can stop the service by PM'ing at any time requesting to be removed.

Quite brilliant.

What I ended up doing was once Stevie posted the games I clicked "Follow for each. So you say everyone posting as a reminder. That and putting a dummy guess in, then updating it.

Seen this last year but forgot to register. So I’ve done it early this season. 1st time I’ve used Paypal but seemed self explanatory, so hopefully it’s gone straight to you.

This week, we'll have a look at the beneficiaries.

Once every Predictor pays up their £10 entrance fee, there is a pot from which to divvy up.

Prediction League's inaugural season was 2011-12, the number of active participants was 23.

Over the years, the number has steadily grown, which is testament to it's administration, run by @Stevie_J & @Bristolatic and the format of divisions, promotion/relegation, play offs and the OWTB Cup [details on that to come] meaning that every Predictor is in with a shout of achieving something right up until the end, assuming you're not too forgetful & miss too many matches. See post above if you feel this could be you.

2011/12 23
2012/13 17
2013/14 20
2014/15 29
2015/16 32
2016/17 42
2017/18 50

In the 2017-18 season, Prediction League was contested by a record 50 participants, meaning there was a £500 pot, less Paypal fees, from which to share among the beneficiaries.

Firstly there is the Prize Fund. Divisional winners, runners up and OWTB Cup winner picked up the following in 2017/18;

Reckon you've go the knack for Predicting Latics' fortunes? Fancy winning a few quid? Prediction League is for you! All you have to do for now is pay the £10 entrance fee via PayPal to stevie_j@owtb.co.uk (Please note the underscore) with your OWTB username in the comments box and your name will appear in the following Participants thread;

Then, keep popping into this thread over the coming weeks while I continue to explain more.

The second beneficiary of money raised by Prediction League contributors, is Playershare.

Playershare is an initiative created by Trust Oldham, allowing us fans to be able to contribute to a fund that can directly affect the playing budget / recruitment of players for our incumbent manager. Without wishing to place words in the mouth of its creator(s) and administrators, it keeps money away from persons you might trust less to spend it directly on the team.

The scheme has been used by a number of manager over the years and indeed is being used presently to aide in the recruitment of player(s) for Frankie Bunn.

You can contribute in a number of ways;

1. By standing Order

  • Beneficiary Name: Trust Oldham PlayerShare Save-Scheme
  • Sort Code: 16-27-11 (RBS Oldham Branch)
  • Account Number: 10176108

2. Paypal

  • playershare@laticsplayershare.co.uk

3. One-Off Payments made by Cheque.

4. By signing up to Prediction League

  • In 2017-18, Prediction league raised £125 for Playershare.

C'mon, all you have to do for now is pay the £10 entrance fee via PayPal to stevie_j@owtb.co.uk (Please note the underscore) with your OWTB username in the comments box and your beloved club will raise a little bit of money. What's not to like?

Keep popping into this thread over the coming weeks while I continue to explain more.

Good man Dave. It would be great to see some more frequent and respected members of the OWTB community do the same over the next couple of weeks... which may help the beneficiaries list to grow.....?!?

The third beneficiary of money raised by Prediction League contributors, is Dr Kerhsaw's Hospice.

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice was opened in 1989 - coinciding with the beginning of Latics' Pinch Me season - following the conversion and development of a 1930s cottage hospital originally built with a legacy from Dr John Kershaw, a local GP. The Hospice has undergone a number of building programmes, which has included expansion and refurbishment that offers high quality patient accommodation.

Dr Kershaw's provides specialist palliative care for adults with non-curable, life-limiting illnesses in a peaceful and homely environment. Palliative care is an area of healthcare that focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients. Palliative care is appropriate for patients at all stages of illness, including those undergoing treatment for symptom control or rehabilitation as well as patients who are nearing the end of life.

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is an independent hospice and a registered charity (Charity No. 1105924). It is partially funded by the Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), circa £800,000 per year, however, the major part of the annual budget of £2.8m is supported by fundraising activities, donations, legacies, income from the Hospice shops and revenue from the Hospice lottery.

The Hospice serves a population of some 220,000 people drawn from Oldham and its surrounding districts and has a close working relationships with Oldham CCG; Pennine Care NHS Trust and Pennine Acute NHS Trust.

All of us at some stage will be affected, either directly or indirectly, with illnesses that require the expertise of people/places such as Dr Kershaw's, and what better way than to contribute a little something to a organisation that serves the local community.

In 2017-18, OWTB Prediction League raised £125 for Dr Kershaw's.

I hope you agree that there really is no reason not to join Prediction League, it provides a little light relief from the burden of watching our beloved club - although it would be nice to think we'll be Predicting more victories this coming season. You could be in with a shout of winning a couple of bob and then there are the great causes that benefit too.

All you have to do for now is pay the £10 entrance fee via PayPal to stevie_j@owtb.co.uk (Please note the underscore) with your OWTB username in the comments box.

Then, keep popping into this thread over the next 3 weeks, when I'll move onto tactics, mind games and finally - after last year's success - we'll take a look at some Predictors in focus.

Today, I thought we'd begin having a look at the OWTB Cup. Think of it as the FA Cup of Prediction League.

2017-18 witnessed a record 50 Predictors sign up, so the format of the early round(s) was a group stage. A bit like the World Cup, but with no seeding. All divisions mixed up by chance in a draw that is taped and broadcast on OWTB to ensure no foul play. More on that later.

OWTB Cup games begin in January and end in May and coincide with standard League games, the schedule of which @Stevie_J will inform us of in good time. Potential replay weeks - for later knockout rounds - are also accounted for, such is the excellent administration.

This means that while Predicting for standard League points, you will be competing against 1 other Predictor in the OWTB Cup at the same time during these weeks. It makes for interesting tactics & mind games, something we'll look at next week.

During 2017-18, the following games counted as OWTB Cup group stage games;

Date - Opponent - Correct Prediction

13/1 Rotherham (h) 1-1 [HT 1-1], Craig Davies, 4,775
20/1 Peterborough (a) 0-3 [HT 0-0], n/a, 5,072
27/1 Plymouth (h)  1-2 [HT 0-2], Anthony Gerrard, 4,274
3/2 Bradford (h) 2-1 [HT 1-0], Cameron Dummigan, 5,526
10/2 Blackburn (a) 2-2 [HT 0-2], Duckens Nazon, 13,655

Following all group games, the tables stood as following, with group winner and the 6 best group runners up progressing to the 2nd round, or Round of 16.

Grp Tables Final.JPG

You can't deny it's well run can you? Come on, get yourself signed up. It's well worth it.

Pay the £10 entrance fee via PayPal to stevie_j@owtb.co.uk (Please note the underscore) with your OWTB username in the comments box and your name will appear in the sign up Predictor List below;

Then, keep popping into this thread over the next 3 weeks, when I'll complete the OWTB Cup story, demonstrate the tactics & mind games and have a bit of fun with 'Predictors in Focus'.

So, we're 2 1/2 weeks from the big KO. For the uninitiated, it's now time to begin having a butchers at tactics and mind games.

@Stevie_J will create a thread, within the Prediction League Forum for each game. As soon as he does, you are free to place your Prediction in there at anytime, up until - but no later than - 10 mins before KO.

Here's last season's thread for B@stard Rovers (a), a game that was played on 10th Feb

Where;

  • 23 Predictions were made in advance of the game, with....
  • 4 Predictors employing the Late Amendment.
  • 18 were made on the day.
  • 9 Predictors forgot.

What will you do? Go early, or wait to see the form, what the weather looks like, who's on the Teamsheet, or even how many away fans look to be in the Chaddy End, before making your Prediction?

This season see's the introduction of the email to text message reminder service. If you think this will help you, please read the following post;

What you waiting for? Sign up now. Pay the £10 entrance fee via PayPal to stevie_j@owtb.co.uk (Please note the underscore) with your OWTB username in the comments box and your name will appear in the sign up Predictor List below;

2 weeks tomorrow, the season kicks off....

What sort of Predictor will you be? Can you be objective, or do Royal Blue tinted glasses cloud your judgement? To borrow a phrase from other threads, will you be a #WalktheLeaguePredictor, a #RealisticPredictor or a #ConsolidationPredictor?

In this episode of tactic and mind games, I thought we'd have a look at how those with a positive or pessimistic disposition fared in the most recent campaign.

In the Premier League, one of Prediction League's ever present's, @Bristolatic, was the most positive Predictor in the division. He Predicted 39 wins, 7 draws and 0 losses in his 46 games. This would've returned 124 points. :omg: Maybe somewhat unsurprisingly, @Bristolatic was relegated from the Premier League. Will he see fit to change his Predicting tactic for the forthcoming campaign, or stick to his guns now we are League 2?

The most pessimistic Predictor in the Premier League, was another of the ever Present's, @Stevie_J, who Predicted 13 wins, 7 draws and 25 defeats - the equivalent of 46 points - forgetting to post a Prediction on 1 occasion. @Stevie_J finished 4th.

However, @Hometownclub, who was the Premier League winner, Predicted 14 wins, 23 draw and only 9 losses / 65 points, proving you can be successful balancing objectivity & tinted bins.  :imnotworthy:

In the Championship, the most pessimistic Predictor was @singe who's record was 3 wins, 22 draws, 16 losses, forgetting on 5 occasions. Equivalent of 31 points. He won the Championship.

The most positive Predictor was @HarryBosch, who Predicted 36 wins, 6 draws and 4 losses / 114 points. @HarryBosch was relegated to League One. :disappointed:

The most realistic - in terms of points Latics actually achieved - were @Oafc1895 W11 D16 L15 P49 and @Benja, W12 D15 L17 P51. @Oafc1895 finished in Play Offs, going out at the S/F stage to @oafcmetty. @Benja finished 13th, narrowly avoiding being relegated to League One. :mmm:

It's not quite as straight forward as meets the eye is it?

Sign up now to show how good you are at Predicting. Pay the £10 entrance fee via PayPal to stevie_j@owtb.co.uk (Please note the underscore) with your OWTB username in the comments box and your name will appear in the signed up Predictor List below;

In the Final edition of tactics & mind games, I thought we'd have a look at what happens when you're in direct competition with another Predictor, either in the OWTB Cup, in the Play Offs, or battling for position in the league.

  • If you decide to go with an Early Prediction, what's stopping your competitor seeing your Prediction and hedging their bets? If you therefore decide to go with a Late Prediction, what happens if you fail to get your Prediction in on time?

Here, for the Scunthorpe (a) fixture, which also doubled up as the OWTB 2nd round, we witness @GravityGrave attempting to gain an advantage on his opponent @stevesidg by employing the Late Prediction. Unfortunately, because of the paucity of a decent 4G signal in the backwater that is Scunthorpe, it didn't go through until 2:56pm. This is something that all Predictors should be even more mindful of this coming season, especially at places like Forest Green, where carrier pigeon is still the main form of communication amongst locals.

In another example of what could've been, here @yarddog73 Predicted the Charlton (a) attendance to within 1 of the actual number, only to learn that the Prediction landed on OWTB at 3:01pm, even from Sarf Landan;

  • For the less experienced Predictor, do be on the look out for the more unscrupulous amongst us, who will place a Dummy Prediction, complete with the intention of employing the Late Amendment.

In what was possibly the most amusing and yet heartbreaking moment of the 2017/18 campaign, @aidan_latics an experienced Predictor of some 4 seasons, under the pressure and strain of his first chance at silverware in the OWTB Cup Final replay no less, employed the Dummy Post/Late Amendment combo and edited it incorrectly, leaving a FT score of 0-0, with it being 1-0 to Latics at HT after an Eoin Doyle goal. Prediction null & void. No points scored. Cup final lost. To add insult to injury, Latics relegated. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

  • FYI, the 2nd leg of Play Off games, sees Predictions made via PM to admin to ensure no foul play.

This season see's the introduction of the email to text message reminder service. If you think this will help you, please read the following post;
